• Trumpets were used as long ago as Ancient Egypt, however, it was n 1820 that the valve was invented and added to the trumpet design we know today. This allows the player to change the length of the tube that the air travels through and enables him to play more notes.

• Most of the sound comes out the end of a brass instrument making the sound very directional. This is unlike many other instruments including woodwinds

THE BRASS FAMILYTRUMPET/CORNET• Both the trumpet and cornet are the highest

instruments in the brass family• Both the trumpet and cornet come in a gold

color but can come in other colors such as silver, blue and red

• Both the trumpet and cornet use valves and have 3 of them

• The trumpet may only have three valves, but you can actually play 45 distinct notes by manipulating those valves

• Modern trumpets are made from brass, but the earliest trumpets were made out of many different materials, including conch shells and wood

THE BRASS FAMILYFRENCH HORN• It is the third highest sounding instrument

group in the brass family• The horn or French horn consists of about

12 feet of narrow tubing wound into a circle• The player obtains different notes on the

horn with a clear mellow sound by pressing valves with the left hand and by moving the right hand inside of the bell

• The french horn is one of the most difficult standard orchestral brass instruments to play

THE BRASS FAMILYTROMBONE• Trombone- Means large trumpet in Italian• The trombone is one of the oldest classical

orchestral instruments still being used today• The first known mention of the word

trombone was in 1488, but that mention was made in reference to its appearance at the wedding of the Duke of Burgundy 20 years earlier

• The most singular element of a trombone is the slide mechanism.

• It also has a cup-shaped mouthpiece through which the player buzzes air

THE BRASS FAMILYTUBA• The Tuba was invented by Willhelm

Friedrich Wieprecht and Johann Gottfried Moritz in September 12, 1835

• Tuba is a Latin word meaning trumpet or horn

• Early tubas were altered to possess forward-facing bells in order to make recording the sounds of the instruments easier

• Tubas come in a variety of pitches ranging from the deep bass of the extremely rare subcontrabass tuba to the much higher pitched tenor tuba

THE BRASS FAMILYSOUSAPHONE• Largest brass musical instrument of the tuba

family• Invented by James Welsh Pepper in 1898 at

the request of , the earliest model having bell which opened directly upward John Philip Sousa

• It was introduced by John Sousa to fortify the bass section of US military bands

• The sousaphone is an important fixture of the New Orleans brass band tradition

• Sousaphone players are also known to perform the 'flaming tubas' in which flash paper is ignited in the bell, thus making it appear as if the musician is breathing fire
