Members, Welcome to the June issue of “The Branch”. ANZAC Day has come and gone. It was a very successful day with huge crowds in attendance which was appreciated by all veterans. A major issue arose on the Wednesday prior which could have resulted in the march being cancelled, but the problem was solved, at great expense to the Sub-Branch. Our new offices of Pensions & Wellbeing departments are up and running with an increase in numbers of the younger veterans attending for help, which was the main reason for moving ahead with the acquisition of the office space in the Signature Building on Torquay Road. We have been lucky to have Michael “Tiny” Anderson helping out in Pensions while three of our regular Pension/Compensation Advocates have been away. Tiny is from Nanango and is a Level 3 Advocate. Sadly, Edward “Buster” Crabb passed away last month. Buster was a Sub-Branch Committee Member who was held in high esteem by everyone who came into contact with him. He will be greatly missed. Remember, my door is always open to any member who wishes to come in and have a chat. Until next edition, take care.

Brian Tidyman President.

Hello to all!

Firstly we wish to thank the general public for their generous support given to us with the sale of our White Crosses on ANZAC Day. Your support enabled us to surpass the number sold last year. So once again, many thanks. In March some of our ladies went on a day tour to Woodgate. This was most enjoyable and a great day was had by all.

This month we shall be going on a Mystery Trip so this could prove most interesting. Thankfully our driver knows our destination. Many thanks to Maggie for all her hard work in organising these trips for us. On Tuesday 25 June we will be holding our annual Tombola morning. We would love to see you there as there will be many great prizes to be won along with free morning tea. A great day is assured.

In August we will be celebrating our 90th birthday. This is truly a great achievement. We shall be celebrating with a High Tea which we are all looking forward to. If any member of the public would like to join our auxiliary please feel free to come along to one of our meetings which are held the second Tuesday of each month commencing at 10:30am at the Hervey Bay RSL Club. You would be most welcome. Joan Hawkes (Secretary)

The Naval Association of Australia Fraser Coast Sub Section

“Each for All-All for Each”

Postal Address: Fraser Coast Sub-section of N.A.A. c/-Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club Inc.

PO Box 3042, Pialba QLD 4655

The Fraser Coast Sub-Section continue to meet at the Hervey RSL Boardroom on the 2nd Sunday of the month (except January). Application for membership is invited—please contact: Peter McDermott on 0409 260 255 or email [email protected]

OR

Greg McHugh on 0428 696 848 or email [email protected]

The Naval Association of Australia is committed to four important principals;

Care (i.e. the welfare of our members), Commemoration, Camaraderie, and we assist our local naval Cadet units. In a break from our usual contribution, the leading two articles are ones which might inspire, or influence others in the Defence community; SCHOLARSHIP: This is a good news story of how the RSL assists the family of veterans; Our Vice President, Marty Price, is a Navy veteran. His daughter Karla is studying for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film, Screen and News Media) at QUT Kelvin Grove. She applied for the 2019 RSL Queensland Scholarship late last year after conversations with Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman, and her father. The Scholarship is across three categories, of which Karla was eligible for the Veteran Dependant category. Only 20 are awarded annually for this category. The application process was completed, then the wait began. Karla was advised towards the end of March that she had been successful. The total value of the scholarship is $12,000, to be used from 2019 to 2021. The amount will go a long way towards reducing her HECS debt for which she is sincerely grateful. DONATION: During his recent move from Urangan to Pialba, new member Chuck Fisher discovered 7 mint-condition ship’s crests (plaques) amongst his affects. All were from ships and naval depots that he had formerly served. Chuck decided to donate them to the Fraser Coast Naval Association, who (with his permission) donated them on to the RSL Sub-Branch where they are now on show in the Memorial Club Anzac Bar. “CROSSED THE BAR”: The month of May has not been kind to our membership; Two of our members, David Kirwan and Edward “Buster” Crabb have Crossed the Bar. Both were ex-Junior Recruits and their loss will be hard felt. Lest We Forget!

After carefully considering family and friends in your Will, making a bequest to the RSL ensures you will be remembered and will help those who served in their time of need. The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch Inc. humbly accepts all bequests.

Many people choose to offer pledges to the RSL in lieu of floral tributes at the time of someone’s passing, or to leave assets or funds to the RSL in their Will. Any and all forms of support continue to touch the people who need it most.

Advice regarding a bequest can be obtained from your own solicitor or from Law Essentials, the appointed solicitors for the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch Inc. See their contact details on the back page of this newsletter.
