The California Strawberry Commission would like to hire a Cal Poly student on a part-time basis to help them with fabricating and

evaluating their new Bug Vac.

Student Opportunities

The Cal Poly Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) is kicking the year off with an exciting Elevator Pitch Competition that encourages students to pitch their crazy idea in just 90 seconds to win 8 cash prizes up to $2,000. CIE and Cal Poly Entrepreneurs are hosting pitch workshops for students to attend 9/30 and 10/7 to help them create their pitch for the idea that has been in the back of their head or a Cal Poly project that inspired them. All students have to do is upload a 90 second YouTube video of their pitch by 10/7 11:59pm. CIE is trying to include as many CAFES students as they can, one of our successful startup accelerator teams, VegThisWay, is a healthy child food product company made up of Cal Poly nutrition majors. We absolutely believe that CAFES students are the next entrepreneurs!

The Climate Change Response Program is now accepting proposals from across the NPS (all parks and programs) for rigorous summer internship projects related to climate change. Our internship program qualifies under the Dept. of Interior's Direct Hire Authority, which means that interns who excel in their work and subsequently complete their degree requirements are eligible to be hired non-competitively into an NPS or other DOI job. Consequently, we encourage you to think about innovative and high-priority climate change projects that should be carried out by a highly accomplished undergraduate or graduate student whom you might subsequently hire into a federal job. Eligible areas of focus include

natural & cultural resource conservation & adaptation; climate effects monitoring; facilities adaptation; policy development; sustainable operations / mitigation; communication, interpretation, or education.

Earthquakes As the recent Napa earthquake reminds us, major earthquakes can happen at any time in California. Help us keep our students and community prepared and safe by encouraging participation in this year’s Great California ShakeOut statewide annual earthquake drill. At 10:16 a.m. on October 16, 2014, nine million Californians will practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” along with millions of others nationally and globally. Earthquakes are one of our region’s most significant safety concerns. Many out-of-state and international students have never experienced an earthquake and likely have

had little to no earthquake preparedness education. Even those who have had significant earthquake training may have been taught the wrong preparation methods. It is important for everyone to practice what to do in an earthquake so that it becomes second nature in times of actual emergency. You can find additional information and support materials at emergency.calpoly.edu and www.shakeout.org/california.
