Local News & Notices

Great Bradley Village Hall Lottery DrawWith just one more draw to go before the new Village Hall Lottery Year, the Hall Committee really appreciate thesupport the village gives to the Hall by way of entering the Lottery. It would of course be nice if there was aguarantee of winning, but at least everyone who wins the top prize gets back more than their original stake, which is probably a better return than putting your money in the Post Office!

This year, the Lottery has provided the grand sum of £496 towards maintaining our Village Hall, which isfantastic, thanks to you. My target last year was to raise £500, so we nearly did it but not quite. Is it beyondGreat Bradley to manage to raise £600 this year? ? All it would need would be another 18 names to enter - andof course then the Prize Fund would be bigger, and more little envelopes of cash would slide through theletterboxes of the village!

In the Draw made in the Hall on September 13th, the following lucky winners were :

1st Prize £18.00 – No. 68 - Duncan Andrews, Pond House

2nd Prize £10.00 – No. 37 - Pauline Black c/o Spring Barn

3rd Prize £10.00 – No. 9 - Gill Brown, Balsham

Articles, Information & Advertising

Reflections On Summer And Looking Forward To 2017!October is upon us and work for the new farming year – Harvest 2017 – has already begun. But let’s reflect onHarvest 2016 too!

Weather so far in 2016After a mild winter, it was a cool, wet and prolonged Spring which held the crops back, particularly the OilseedRape and the Sugar Beet.

Although June was wet (approximately 91mm of rain, much of it in the second half), the Summer has been good. Both July and August were dry and sunny, providing almost perfect harvest conditions. Rainfall in August wasonly 37mm against a ten-year average of 81mm. As at the end of September, this year we have hadapproximately 420mm and, subject to the vagaries of the autumn and winter, we should be on for a belowaverage total for 2016. Another sign that the very wet years of the early 2000s are behind us.

Harvest 2016It was the second worst year for Oilseed Rape since we begangrowing it in 1974. This was caused by a combination of the coolSpring and wet June together with an ongoing battle with a pestcalled the flea beetle. We are no longer allowed to attack the fleabeetle with certain sprays as they may harm bees. Therefore, weneed to rely on a very cold winter to decimate the flea beetlepopulation. We are due such a winter!

However, Wheat performed well with our Milling Wheat (grown forWarburtons) being of excellent quality. The Spring crops – barleyand beans - defied the early cool conditions to come good as aresult of the wonderful July and August weather. At the time ofwriting, we are now harvesting the Sugar Beet which suffered fromthe cool Spring after being drilled in March. However, the sunnyconditions of the last three months should have resulted in very highlevels of sugar content, the opposite of last year’s abysmal levels.

Harvest 2017The Oilseed Rape was drilled in mid-August and largely looks well. This was deliberately earlier than usual, not least to fool the fleabeetle! We are currently drilling the Winter Wheat which will all beof the milling type in 2017 including a new variety called Illustrious.Let’s hope it lives up to its name! Conditions are excellent – goodseedbeds are fundamental if you want good crops as all gardenersknow! Work is also in progress cultivating fields destined to bedrilled with Spring crops – it is essential to do this before the land becomes too wet and it means that we areable to drill these fields as soon as conditions allow in the Spring without damaging the soil structure.

Conservations Strategy/Countryside Stewardship We are now completing implementation of our new Conservation Strategy which incorporates membership ofthe new Countryside Stewardship (Higher Tier) Scheme. Various small fields have just been drilled with NectarFlower Mix including two by the river. In May we drilled Nectar Flower Mix on Horse Pasture which is a fieldnear College Wood - the result was a wonderful array of wild flowers in August. We have also just drilled threeareas of Autumn Bumblebird Mix which should provide food for birds in February/March after the supply of seed

in the Spring drilled Wild Bird Seed Mixes has been exhausted.

In November, we will also be planting some 600 metres of hedgerow – one completely new hedgerow and somesubstantial gapping up of others.

The RiverAs you may recall, last autumn we installed about 60 woody debris deflectors along the River to improve itsecology. This appears to have been successful and the experts from the Environment Agency are certainlypleased!

In a few weeks’ time we will be planting approximately 120 trees along the riverbank including black poplar, alder, oak and field maple.

Hedgerow MaintenanceYou will have seen that we have done some hedgerow maintenance work in mid-September. However, most ofthe hedgerow maintenance will take place in February so that the hedgerow berries can be used by the birdsover the winter. We have to undertake some work in September because it becomes too wet to drive on certainfields in February.

Some people asked for the hedges on either side of the permissive footpath (running down from the RecreationGround) to be cut earlier in the Summer. However, we are only allowed to cut hedges between 1st September to28th February. This is for the benefit of wildlife.

Tours in 2017 – Dates for the DiarySome early dates for next year’s diary!

The Bluebell Walk is planned for Saturday, 29th April.

The Farm and Woodland Tour is planned for Saturday, 3rd June.

In addition, some of you may be interested to come on the Tours which we undertake at Broxted (the old RAFStradishall airfield) which encompasses the Solar Farm, extensive grassland and livestock grazing, woodlandand many special wildlife/conservation features. The dates for these Tours next year are:

Saturday, 6th May

Saturday, 8th July

Saturday, 9th September

More details will be given closer to the time – I hope to see some of you on the Tours!

From muffin top to French Fancy….“I promise you, you won’t be hungry….” My colleague smiled at me as she opened the door

of my first experience of Slimming World…

It all started on Wednesday 6th January 2016, 30 weeks ago when mycolleague led me to my first ever group session with Slimming World atNewmarket. I was instantly at home, thanks to a warm, brightenvironment, a lot of smiling people and us the nervous group… thenewbies…the ones who had enough of our sight after Christmas. Thatday there were over 90 people in the room, all motivated to lose theChristmas-built flab’. I have to be honest, like you I was dubious…I listento the consultant briefing and all I could think is: how many of this? Howmuch of that? How many calories can I have? The simplicity of the planwas just too good to be true – NO SCALE except for two things eachday!! Are you kidding me? And I will lose weight? My consultant turnedaround and smile: “yes you will on average 2.5 lbs a week…I promiseyou, you won’t be hungry…” Here they go again… those magic words! After returned from my maternity leave, I still had 4 stones to shift. Onmy first week of Food Optimising, I lost a whopping 7.5lbs, plan is easyto follow, pack your fridge content with colourful fruit and veg’! There isan abundance of recipes available in the very well-thought magazine or

on the website or in the various branded recipe books; but members also exchange their home-made recipes ortips on their group Facebook page, a private group where you can get additional support for those challengingdays. If I say on plan, you can eat English breakfast, curry, SW chips…you will think that I have lost it?? BUT Yesyou can eat curry and lose weight and if you haven’t got time to cook Iceland has the exclusivity with Slimmingworld ready meals! My secret weapons: eggs and Quark! Those key ingredients are packed in proteins; they aredelicious and fill me up for longer! I had lost a total of 4 stones and 12lbs and I have never been much happierwith what I see in the mirror.

So what have you got to lose, except weight?

I promise you, you will never be hungry again!

Join me every Thursdays from Thursday 20th October at 7.30pm for your private weighing and group therapy at8pm (1 hour max.) at Great Bradley Village Hall, The Street, Great Bradley, Newmarket, CB8 9LQ.

Healthwatch Suffolk - Calls For Your Stories Of Care In The CountyHealthwatch Suffolk has the power to shape, influence and improve local NHS and social care services in thecounty. It is independent from the NHS and social care, which means you can be honest when sharing yourviews.

It has launched a new campaign called “#NHSSelfieStars” for obtaining feedback from people about their use oflocal health and social care services. It wants to celebrate what is good about services and highlight wherethings could be better.

The state of the current health and care economy means that it has never been more important to share yourviews about local services; even if you don’t think it will make a difference. The watchdog hopes that thiscampaign will encourage people to share their stories so that it can help health and social care professionalsunderstand the views and experiences of people using their services and feed them into ongoing plans tochange the way your services are delivered.

Healthwatch Suffolk is asking people to share a “selfie” and a story of NHS care in Suffolk so that it can highlight

your experiences. All of the stories will be added to the growing volume of data the watchdog has alreadygathered from local people and used to hold services to account. You can share your selfie and story withHealthwatch Suffolk on Instagram (use #NHSSelfieStars) or by email to [email protected].

It is always possible to share your experiences anonymously with Healthwatch Suffolk. UK Power Networks: 105 national numberWhat Is 105? 105 is a new three-digit number that people can call to report or get informationabout power cuts.

You can also call 105 with any welfare concerns related to a power cut, or if youare worried about the safety of over or underground electricity cables orsubstations.

105 is free of charge and will put you through to your electricity network operator. You can call 105 from mostlandlines and mobile phones.

It will be launched in September 2016 and will be available to people in England, Scotland and Wales.

The www.powercut105.com website will be live for launch, providing people with more information andsignposting them to their network operator.

Why Is It Being Introduced? A lot of people don’t know who to call to report or get updates about power cuts, with many wrongly calling theenergy supply companies they pay their bills to.

105 aims to solve this problem, providing people with an easy-to-remember number that will put them straightthrough to their local electricity network operator.

This is particularly important when there is bad weather as severe storms can cause major disruption toelectricity supply into homes and businesses.

105 is just one of the ways you can contact your network operator. They can still be contacted directly by phoneon their 0800 number or via their website – and most can be reached through social media too.

Who Is Behind 105? 105 is jointly funded by electricity network operators.

Electricity network operators are the companies that manage and maintain the underground cables, overheadlines and substations that bring electricity into homes and businesses.

There are several electricity network operators. The larger ones each cover a different region within GreatBritain. Wherever you live, 105 will put you through to the right network operator.
