Welcome to another exciting year at the IIA San Gabriel Valley Chapter!
Last year, I had the privilege of working with the most dedicated and hardest
working volunteers in our profession. I extend my sincere gratitude to our
Board of Governors, Officers and our supportive members who contributed
to our accomplishments. Some of our key achievements last year include:
Increased membership by more than 20 additional audit profes-
sionals.
Promoted the audit profession in colleges/universities and small
businesses.
Held seven successful and well-received Lunch Programs cov-
ering a variety of topics.
Sponsored three successful academic outreach events at Cal
Poly Pomona, UCLA and Beach Cities, which yielded some new
attendees to our monthly meetings.
Hosted a 3-day Seminar covering both technical and critical soft skills.
Achieved the necessary CAP points to maintain our Platinum Status designation.
Sent three attendees to the Annual IIA Leadership Academy in Orlando.
Published our newsletter which earned us kudos from our District and Regional Officers.
Maintained the financial health of our Chapter through our responsible financial stewardship.
Our theme for this year is Getting Involved. Each of us brings something unique to our Chapter. Why just be a spectator
when you can take center stage? So, I challenge you to make this year count. Join the fun and be part of the exciting New
Year for our Chapter.
On behalf of the IIA SGVC Board of Governors and Chapter leaders, we welcome your comments, suggestions, new ideas,
lunch meeting topics, and all other information that will help us serve you better. I look forward to seeing you all at our chapter
engagements.
The time to get involved is NOW. Please contact Erlinda Bisquera at: [email protected] to volunteer.
Sincerely,
Diana Estrada

Volunteering: Key to
Leadership Success
By Steven J. Hudoba
As a frequent speaker for student as-
sociations and staff development
seminars, I am often asked, “How can
I become a good leader? What can I
do to set myself apart from my peers?” One re-
sponse I offer is to step forward as a volunteer
leader. I recognize that many professionals may
be reluctant to donate their time, questioning the
value of volunteering in relation to the commit-
ment required. In fact, recent data from the U.S.
Bureau of Labor and Statistic shows that the
volunteer rate — just over 25 percent — is at its
lowest level since 2002. Yet volunteering helps
cultivate professional skills that may not be
achievable in a nonvolunteer setting and
provides experience that is all but impera-
tive for aspiring audit leaders.
Effective leaders must be adept in
many areas, including the ability to reason
and think clearly, generate good ideas, and
communicate effectively. They must also
project enthusiasm and maintain a sincere
interest in other people and their concerns.
Internal auditors will have ample opportuni-
ty to apply themselves in these areas as they
address the challenges of volunteer
leadership.
Practitioners can also put their powers
of persuasion and employee motivation
skills to the test in volunteer positions.
Convincing other volunteers to act on
ideas requires salesmanship and morale
building. Working with others in volunteer
roles can help develop consensus-
development skills, as well as the capacity
to inspire others. Respect, goodwill, and al-
truism — all qualities necessary for suc-
cessful leaders to possess — can be brought
to bear and honed over time in volunteer
positions. In a work environment, these
11
will elicit improved performance and can help
leaders gain respect and loyalty among the
workforce.
By volunteering, auditors with upper
management aspirations will also be making an
important addition to their resume, as volunteer
leadership experience is often considered a pre-
requisite for senior management positions. Most
senior managers have likely volunteered at
some point in their career. And while participa-
tion as a leader of a volunteer organization does
not guarantee someone a chief audit executive
position, the absence of volunteer ac-
tivities may well be a disqualifier for
upper management hiring. Profes-
sionals without this experience may
lack the leadership skills, professional
network, and support from the profes-
sion and community that many volunteers pos-
sess.
From a goodwill standpoint, the reasons
to volunteer are numerous. But taking on a vol-
unteer leadership role, or working up through
different volunteer leadership roles over time,
can also provide a tremendous boost to one’s
professional growth. By picking an activity or
organization they enjoy, volunteers receive an
opportunity to help others — and themselves.
Volunteer leaders set themselves apart
from their peers, gain valuable experi-
ence, and eventually may find themselves
at the top of their company’s organiza-
tional chart.

Jane Gachucha has been in the Metro Man-
agement Audit Services department and a
member of the San Gabriel Chapter for four
years. During the past year 2018, she partic-
ipated in Metro’s Leadership Academy. This
leadership program required the participant
to work on a Capstone Project with a team
of five other colleagues. At the end of the
program, her team presented their Capstone
Project to the CEO. Jane and her team’s
project “Improving Modes of Transporta-
tion,” using Real Time data, was selected by
the CEO for implementation. Jane is a Met-
ro Leadership Pro-
gram graduate for
the year 2018. She
is also nominated
for the 2019 CEO
Award for the

ter as a co-chair of the Programs
Committee, and is responsible to co-
