The Charitable Association
of the Boston Fire Department.
This Institution was formed June 19, 1828, and incorporated in
1830—f0r the purpose of affording relief to such of their number
as may receive injury whilst performing their duties as firemen.
Any fireman who pays 50 cents receives assistance during the year
his certificate is dated—viz: has all his physicians, and other
necessary bills paid,-and a sum allowed him for his lost time,
not exceedin $9 a week. This assistance is continued aslonrgas
he is sick. 0 show the value of this society, we can state, that
it consisted of 1231 members for the year 1835—am0unt received
$615 50—and yet it expended for the relief alone of 126 injured
mem rs $215737 ; over three times the amount received ,' for the
balance they depend upon donations. Every first Tuesday in
January, 20 Trustees are chosen, who govern the concerns of the
society for one year.

We have now given a detailed account of the “ Boston Fire
Department,” an institution, of which the city may justly be
proud; as, for its celerity, energy and perseverance, in putting
out fires, it is not probably excelled, if e ualled by anythinv in
this country, and perhaps in the werld. When we re ect
that the duty of the Fireman though voluntary is always labori
ous and omen almost incredible, we shall doubtless be willing to
award to him the mood of praise which is due. 1
Many of the readers of this little work will doubtless be led,
while passing through the accurate account we have given of this
guardian establishment. to a retrospect of the manner of doing
things some 12 or 15 years ago, when, at a fire the voice and pole
of the fireward were almost as terrible to the lookers on, as the
flames to the sufferers. A destructive fire at the lower end of
Beacon St.. corner ot'Charlcs St., by which 150r lti valuable d wel
ling houses were lain in ashes, aroused the city to a sense of the
necessity of doing something. It was not however. till the disas
trous conflagratinn of Kilby and Central Sts. in 1825, that our cit
izens came to a fixed determination to establish a dopnrtment in
character with the increasing prosperity of the city.
