Not only will the company turn fifteen, but to celebrate, we have some of the best theatre companies in Australia coming to our region to work with us in presenting and producing the finest work on offer.

And what an array of stories we have too. There’s an Australian theatre legend’s tribute to his grandmother, a contemporary Australian play about events that happened 1600 years ago, a thriller set in the online world, a gothic tale of mothers and sisters, a brilliant play about youth counter culture and a show that’s been described as Tom Waits meets the Mighty Boosh.

And that’s just the mainstage season. Our brilliant Studio program will be back next year with two works presented throughout the year – a season of absurdist works in July and then some plays specifically commissioned for our

young ensemble in December. All up, there’s thrills, spills, a few tears and a lot of laughs all through 2012.

Most importantly though, HotHouse offers the opportunity for audiences to experience work that celebrates, examines and questions the world in which we live. Only theatre can do this in such a direct, communal and social way. There’s nothing like sitting in a full auditorium and being a part of a group that is collectively moved to hysteria or compelled to absolute silence.

This isn’t just entertainment, it’s entertainment jam packed with ideas and questions you’ve never experienced.

Come for the ride with us in 2012, I promise you, you won’t forget it.

2 3FractionsImagine eight hundred years of scientific, artistic

and academic work destroyed and erased from history. Imagine a government floundering

amongst chaos and confusion due to a new set of values enforced on society as a matter of law. Imagine the most intelligent person in the known world being earmarked for death by religious zealots.

Fractions is the story of Hypatia, a brilliant mathematician and philosopher who was the first woman to be considered the greatest mind of her age. 1600 years ago she was responsible for the Library of Alexandria – the largest collection of knowledge in her world.

The West is on the cusp of entering the dark ages and Rome is under attack on all fronts. In Alexandria, religious fanatics pose a much larger and immediate threat – they’re determined to destroy the Library and anyone who stands in their way. Political turmoil runs unchecked and danger is around every corner. In order to save her Library and her life’s work, Hypatia is faced with a terrible choice.

Winner of the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2010/2011, and developed with the assistance of PlayWriting Australia, Fractions is one of the most anticipated premieres to hit the Australian stage in recent times.

This is the incredible true story of a boy who conspired to murder himself…

Based on extraordinary real events in Manchester in 2003, this stunning work delves into the mind of a teenage chat

room junkie: a modern boy, remarkably clever and longing for connection, who spins a web of deceit that destroys two lives – all for the glory of love.

He is 14-year old Johnny. He wants to be someone, and online he can be anyone he wants. He says he’s a bigger liar than Shakespeare himself, and we have to believe him.

This inspired Australian play is driven by an urgency and vernacular that plunges us headlong into a vortex of online love.

“I think about my grandparents walking along this road – and now I am here. I’m in Malta. I’m looking at absolutely everything and trying to drink it in. I feel connected. I feel like I am home.”

In 1948, Angela left Malta. Having gathered up five children, she sailed out on the Strathnavar, leaving poverty and the war behind. Her

destination: Australia. In Surry Hills, she could build a bright new life. If only she could first learn the language, finish shoring up their dilapidated house, find new friends, get the racist neighbour off her back and keep her son away from sly grog queen Kate Leigh’s kids.

Back in Malta, someone else has made a journey. Making his way along Kalkara’s glistening harbourside, a young man with flowing black hair has returned to claim his past. Paul Capsis is walking home.

A journey that begins at a kitchen table becomes a sprawling family history and a fitting tribute to a much-loved matriarch.

Told simply and truthfully, Angela’s Kitchen is an astonishingly evocative piece of autobiographical theatre from one of Australia’s most versatile performers, Paul Capsis.

Angela’s Kitchen“A deeply felt tribute to

Angela’s fortitude in particular - and by

extension, to all those who take special care of

us as children and profoundly affect the

“Sometimes there’s no scarier place to be than inside your own head”

Sebastian is a terminally unpopular fifteen-year old kid, with an overactive imagination and an obsession with anime and death. His only

friend, Claryssa, is an emo Wiccan art-freak barely one rung higher than Sebastian on the social ladder.

What starts as another night drinking down at the cricket nets soon gives way to an ecstatic vision that leaves Sebastian unconscious and their friendship left in ruin. The next morning, he wakes up with a mysterious moth in a jar by his bed, and a calling to save the souls of all human kind. And so begins the Passion of Sebastian…

Having played three sell out seasons at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre, as well as selling out the Sydney Opera House, Moth is sure to be an incredible and unforgettable experience.

Nominated as Best New Australian Work at the 2011 Helpmann Awards (National Industry), winner of three 2011 Green Room Awards including Best new writing for the Melbourne stage and the 2010 Malcolm Robertson Prize, Moth is bound to leave you breathless.

From internationally acclaimed, multi award winning creators Finucane & Smith comes the haunting and electrifying work hailed as

“masterful… an Australian Gothic that defines the genre”.

The sheep farm is dilapidated. The farm house, dark and squalid, sits by the river, sheltering a mad old lady, and her isolated hard-drinking daughter. Memories are seeping through the floorboards. As the sun sets, the flood waters rise. The screen door bangs open in the rain and wind; Catherine has returned after 20 years. The past is here. Through the mesmerising friction between estranged sisters, fuelled by alcohol and uncertain memories of a long-dead father, three women are trapped with a past no one wants to remember. Bristling with dark humour and edge-of-the-seat performances by three of our finest actresses, The Flood is startlingly authentic writing, plunging audiences into the lives of characters so real you feel you know them; a web of family intrigue against the haunting Australian outback.

The Flood JON’S NOTE: “Mothers, daughters and

sisters. The Flood digs up memories

and familial accusations that cannot be

forgotten. The three women in this cast are

each exceptional performers, The Flood is

a small masterpiece of Australian Gothic.

This show is perfect for the Butter Factory,

my only regret is that we only have it for

three performances. Be sure to book early.”

The hilariously inventive Suitcase Royale are finally coming to the border, bringing you a masterfully mad tale from the dusty-plains of

the Australian outback. Welcome to the Blue Lagoon Caravan Park, an idyllic paradise somewhere in the dead heart of Australia. Wombats are the main attraction, loved by all, until something goes wrong, something goes very wrong! A mysterious disease has turned the Wombats into blood-thirsty demons. Packed with smokin’ live music, junkyard sets and a caravan-full of the Suitcase Royale’s famous brand of twisted humour.

In 2011, HotHouse Theatre embarked on a brand new youth project, The Studio.

We held auditions and selected the best eleven actors, aged between 16 and 25 to form an ensemble that would train and be given performance opportunities throughout the year.

In July, they presented a fully rehearsed production of The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufmann and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project. The production was an outstanding success, playing to full houses and receiving standing ovations each night. In December 2011, the group presented Deviation a full length devised work, in the Butter Factory Theatre.

The program is designed to offer the most talented young performers in the region the opportunity to train with our Studio Director Sebastien Pasche and Artistic Director Jon Halpin as well as providing performance opportunities to young local artists. The ensemble meets weekly on a Thursday evening from 5:30 – 8:30pm.

The group also to takes part in a number of Sunday afternoon workshops and play-readings throughout the year. In 2011, they were able to meet and receive advice and workshops from Marcus Graham, Luke Mullins and Lucas Stibbard as well as attend all of our opening nights.

HotHouse will continue the Studio program throughout 2012, with auditions held in March to select new members of the ensemble. We hope to expand the group in the coming years, but have a cap of 16 as the maximum capacity for the program.

In July next year, the ensemble will perform in a series of short absurdist works in the Butter Factory and in December 2012, they will perform in The Border Trilogy, three short works by Marcel Dorney, Declan Greene and Cate Kennedy, commissioned by HotHouse Theatre. Throughout the year they will take part in further workshops from visiting artists here as a part of our Month in the Country program as well as a series of Sunday afternoon play-readings of classic and contemporary works.

The response to the program from this year’s ensemble has been outstanding, with each member’s confidence and skill base growing dramatically. It is open to any young person from the age of 16 – 25. Any graduating students hoping to take a gap year before pursuing tertiary studies in the performing arts should be encouraged to audition in March.

Taking part in the HotHouse Studio program requires a huge commitment from the participants, but the results are thoroughly rewarding for those involved. Check our website early in the new year for audition dates for the 2012 ensemble. This is the ideal program for any young people hoping to pursue a career in the performing arts.

Built in 1928, The Butter Factory Theatre, Wodonga was formerly the site of Holden & Nielsson, an operating dairy set amongst the bushland of Gateway Island on the banks of the Murray River. In 1997 the building was transformed into a professional theatre venue, becoming the performance home of HotHouse Theatre.

COMMISSIONSHotHouse remains one of only a few professional theatre companies dedicated to the commissioning, development and production of new Australian works.

Good plays take years to create, and they aren’t made in isolation. The idea of the genius playwright beavering away at their work until they produce their masterpiece is a myth. Making theatre is a collaborative process and many minds contribute to the creation of a work.

HotHouse is proud to commission leading and new voices in Australian play writing. Currently, we have Declan Greene, Marcel Dorney, Cate Kennedy and Campion Decent under commission.

We not only commission writers, but we also invest time and money in the process of developing work, to ensure writers are given the opportunity to fully explore their work and to guarantee that when it reaches the stage, it is ready.

In 2012, we will embark on a brand new commission, this time we hope to work with an independent theatre company, developing an idea and then exploring the performance opportunities. If successful, this work won’t reach the Butter Factory Stage until 2014.

A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY Each year, HotHouse plays host to some of the most exciting and innovative theatre makers this country has on offer.

Playwrights, directors, actors, set and costume designers, musicians and composers, video artists, lighting designers and many more, take up residence at our farmhouse and its attached rehearsal studio, (generously provided by AlburyCity), for weeks at a time, and create new, exciting, innovative work. The program has recently been revamped to allow more artists to use the facility and to make the program more flexible, allowing groups to be able to strike when the creative iron’s hot.

In exchange for this residency program, artists deliver workshops and masterclasses to the local community through a partnership between HotHouse and Murray Arts. HotHouse’s own Studio Ensemble are given the opportunity to meet with the groups using the program and are taken through detailed creative development processes.

The work created through A Month in the Country has been produced and presented all over the country. We have had, and continue to have, artists from every state in Australia take advantage of the opportunity to spend some time in Albury Wodonga, see our beautiful region and create exceptional work.

HotHouse Theatre is a local success story of which we can all feel proud. But did you know funding from local, state and federal government accounts for less than 50% of the Company’s income?

HotHouse Theatre generates the rest through box office, donations and business partnerships.

We are one of the last regional theatre companies that remain in Australia and every time we tour, our community tours with us. We are helping to spread the word about this vibrant thriving community throughout Australia.

Here is how you can help:

DONATIONSYou can assist by making a valuable financial contribution to the company. Donations of $2 and over are fully tax deductible and donations are listed on our Donations wall in The Butter Factory Theatre, Wodonga, our annual reports and our website.

Please consider supporting the company by donating to the Artistic Program or perhaps tailor your donation to one of these great initiatives:

BEQUESTS More than 30% of Australians die without making a valid will. Their assets are evenly distributed according to law and not necessarily according to their wishes. You can include anyone you wish to remember in your will, including not for profit organisations of your choice. By making provision for HotHouse in your will, you will be ensuring that high quality theatre will flourish for future generations to enjoy.

BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPSHotHouse offers a unique opportunity to increase your profile on the regional and national stage! Business partnerships with HotHouse Theatre start at $1500 and are individually structured around a wide range of benefits to suit your business.

For more information on any of the above, e-mail Bernadette Haldane (General Manager) at [email protected] or phone 02 6021 7433 and arrange a time to discuss how we can work together to benefit the local community.
