GreetinGs from the hostinG sections
Dear participants,
we are delighted to welcome you to the Annual Conference 2018 “Work in Progress” in Maribor, organised by ISHA Graz and ISHA Maribor. This is the first time that a conference is planned by two ISHA sections. We are thankful for the opportunity to experience first-hand the advantages, but also the challenges that come with the process of working on the organisation of an event from two cities.
The idea of the overall topic arose by numerous conversations about the growing importance of digitalization in our society. Universities, such as the university of Graz started to focus on digitalization by establishing a new department for digital humanities. Our idea was to introduce not only the theory of this new field, but also to make the workshops more practical than they have been before.
The most important part of the program are our ten different workshops dealing with different approaches in digitalization. In the workshop you will deal with different competences and skills from several studies. Moreover, we prepared a cultural program to make you discover our two small, but beautiful cities.
We want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to everyone who was included in the organising process and to our sponsors who made this conference possible!
To conclude, we would like to tell you howhappy and thankful we are that youdecided to participate in this conference. We hope that we have a great time together with new insights and fruitful discussions!
Best wishes,
introduction

AcAdemic Conceptintroduction
Digital Humanities present a new way of re-evaluading already asked scientific questions and gaining new knowledge from them. Furthermore, the "classical" skill set of a historian-to-bet has changed. Nowadays it's important to be aware of how to use digitalized historical sources, how to make digital exhibitions or how to use a blog for scientific purpose. Digitalization also brings a new perception of media: Video Games, YouTube Channels, Art, Films or Comics enable a new way of presenting historical events. In addition to that the historical content gets changed through the limitations and possibilities of that specific medium.
Furthermore, Digitalization offers a change in the "classical" job description of a historian. This leads to the necessarity of a broader view on scientific topics, which means a stronger connection between the disciplines. Historians, art historians, geo-graphers and philosophers can all be involved in the same Digital Humanities project.
The ISHA Annual Conference 2018 focuses on this interdisciplinary approach in the Digital Humanities. Therefore it was our priority to include a variety of workshopleades with different scientific backgrounds and to create with them workshops with a more practical approach. The topic of the AC2018 is focuses on Historical science and how it changed through the Digital Humanities. This Modernizationthrough Digitalization is still ongoing and therefore, the Humanities (& History) is still a WORK IN PROGRESS.

in sloveniA & AustriAHow to survive
Smoking inside is NOT allowed. Few bars have indoor smoking area, but otherwise you’ll have to go outside for a smoke. Or you could also quit smo-king, nobody would be angry at you.
You are allowed to drink in public as long as you don’t cause trouble and break stuff of course. So sitting in the park with beers is totally fine. But of course in the evening, when the academic programme is over.
Sadly, Slovenia might be the most expensive of the ex-Yugo countries. For a beer in a bar you’ll usually pay around 2,20 - 2,50€, and a pack of cigarettes is around 3,50 - 3,70€ on average.
Austrian Bars have smoking and non-smoking areas. If you are not sure in which area you are sitting , then just check for ash trais. If non are to be found then you are in the non-smoking area.
It's not allowed to drink in public in the citycenter/ old part (Innenstadt) of Graz. But as log as you behave (not damaging stuff, not being loud etc.) nobody will care.
In comparison to Maribor is in Graz the price for a 0,5l beer around 3,20 - 4,20 € . A pack of cigarettes is around 5,00€ on average.

1. MAPS Workshop
Workshopleaders: Silvia DOPLER, Lukas MEISINGER (both EGEA Graz)
Location: Dijaški dom Lizike JancarTitova cesta 24a
We all use maps in our everyday life but have you ever questioned a map that you used? We would like to open our participants minds for a different view on maps. We will guide them through the topic of maps and their production then and now. Together we will find out the difference between topographic and thematic maps and their cartographic design. In a practical way we will introduce them into map interpretation for a correct understanding and usage of maps.

Workshopleaders: Michaela Mayrhofer (ISHA Graz), Ben Harding
Location: Hostel PekarnaOb zeleznici 16
Blogging has become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information around the world. It is an excellent medium for the transmission of ideas to a broad readership – expanding traditional methods of knowledge exchange and developing inter-disciplinary relationships. Our workshop will provide an introduction on how to write a blog entry, as well as how to build a blog and make it successful by instilling the best practices for creating and marketing content.

3. GAMES (Intermediality) Workshop
Workshopleaders: Rok PIRIH (ISHA Maribor), Luca GALARDINI (ISHA Roma)
Location: Dijaški dom Lizike JancarTitova cesta 24a
Videogames are often perceived as a useless activity for teenagers, an activity that doesn’t bring anything valuable for society. But in this workshop, we will prove that videogames, like others medias such as literacy and cinematography, can be a source for the comprehension of the past. We will explain how videogames based on History can directly or indirectly inform the players on historical facts and teach them some aspects of the history often forgotten in traditionnal studies and its the limits.

5. YOUTUBE Workshop
Workshopleaders: Domen Kodric,Darjan Lorencic (both ISHA Maribor)
Location: Dijaški dom Lizike JancarTitova cesta 24a
Many YouTube channels offer short videos about history. This workshop will focus on some of those videos and how the historical content is presented in them and who the target group is. We’ll want to see, how such videos are useful for academics and how for other people? We’ll discuss how long and detailed should such videos be, what information can we afford to skip and what can be simplified to certain extent. In the end we’ll try sum up our conclusions and create a short video of our own.

6. MUSEUM Workshop
Workshopleaders: Saskia Spreitz (ISHA Graz), Saša Jeric, Štefan Hadalin (both ISHA Maribor)
Location: Hostel PekarnaOb zeleznici 16
It´s very important to provide an overview about classical museology theories (Stransky, Waidacher) to create a base to guarantee that all participants start with the same level of knowledge. Afterwards we want to combine the theoretical and practical part within visiting a common museum and a virtual museum. At this point we´re able to focus on a discussion about pros and cons.

Due to that the workshop will focus on creating a little exhibition to show the other participants how knowledge is power.
