Throughout the book Death follows the story of Liesel Meminger. While on the way to live at a foster home, Liesel is left; alone after the death of her brother and her mother. She arrives at the home of her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. While delivering the clothes of the wealthy that her foster mother washes, Rosa is invited by the mayor’s wife into their library, where Liesel learns of her love for reading. After a mishap with the mayor’s wife Liesel is no longer able to access the library. She beings sneaking in and stealing books, earning the nickname, ‘the book thief.’
