 10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.

11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the 

perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord--that the Lord is 

very compassionate and merciful.

12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes," be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you 

fall into judgment.

 Jeremiah 38:1-61 Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, 

Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of 

Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying, 2

"Thus says the LORD: 'He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be 

as a prize to him, and he shall live.‘ 3 "Thus says the LORD: 'This city shall

 

 

surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.' " 4 Therefore the princes said to the king, 

"Please, let this man be put to death, for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands

of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm." 5 Then Zedekiah the king said, "Look, he is in your hand. For the king can do nothing against you.“ 6 So they took Jeremiah and

 

cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king's son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down 

with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in 

the mire.

 

Amos 7:10-17   (New Living Translation)10 Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel: “Amos is hatching a plot against you right here on your very doorstep! What he is saying is intolerable. 11 He is

saying, ‘Jeroboam will soon be killed, and the people of Israel will be sent away into exile.’” 12 Then Amaziah sent orders to Amos: “Get out of here, you prophet! Go on back to the land of Judah, and earn 

your living by prophesying there! 13 Don’t

bother us with your prophecies here in Bethel. This is the king’s sanctuary and the national place of worship!” 14 But Amos replied, “I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never trained to be 

one.* I’m just a shepherd, and I take care

of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.’ 16 Now then, listen to this 

message from the Lord: “You say, ‘Don’t prophesy against Israel. Stop preaching

against my people.*’17 But this is what the Lord says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in this city, and your sons and daughters will be killed. Your land will be divided up, and you yourself will die in a foreign land. And the 

people of Israel will certainly become captives in exile, far from their homeland.’”

Job 1:13-2213 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house; 14 and a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys

feeding beside them, 15 when the Sabeans raided them and took them away--indeed they have killed the 

servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!" 16 While he was still speaking, another also came

and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the 

servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!“ 17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three

bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the 

edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!" 18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, 

"Your sons and daughters were eating and

drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19 and suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and 

struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell

you!" 20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." 22 In all this Job did not sin nor charge 

God with wrong.

Job 2:1-101 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among 

them to present himself before the LORD. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, "From

where do you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it." 3 Then the LORD said to 

Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the

earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause.“ 4 So Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! Yes, all that

 a man has he will give for his life. 5 But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely 

curse You to Your face!" 6 And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life." 7 So Satan went out

from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, 

"Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!" 10 But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. 

Job 42:12-1712 Now the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. 13 He also

had seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first 

Jemimah, the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-

Happuch. 15 In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of

Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. 16 

After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children and 

grandchildren for four generations. 17 So Job died, old and full of days. 

12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes," be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you 

fall into judgment.   

Matthew 5:33-3733 "Again you have heard that it was said 

to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.' 34 "But I say to you, do not swear at 

all: neither by heaven, for it is God‘s

throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is 

from the evil one. 

    

Ephesians 4:15-1615 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the

 

effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body 

for the edifying of itself in love.
