The new underground station

The new underground high speed train station is located 23 metres below theexisting level of track. Located in the area occupied by the last five lines of trackof the Central Station, on the Via Carracci side, it will consist of a large under-ground space, around 650 m long and over 40 metres wide, on three levels. Thedeepest level will house the track; the intermediate level, at 15 metres under-ground, will house the passenger services, while the shallowest level, at a depthof 7 metres, will take vehicular traffic and give access to the station car parks andthose in the Salesiani area. The Bologna Junction

Track route

The urban section of the high speed line runs through Bologna from south to west, with 60% of the route underground. The overall length of the urban section is 17.8 km.From the Savena - San Ruffillo zone, the line runs to the new high speed station. From here, it continues towards Milan, going aboveground at the Prati di Caprara. After crossing the Reno river, the route runs alongside the existing Bologna – Milanline as far as the Lavino river. It then joins the new high speed line at AnzolaEmilia.

Principal construction works

The project provides for construction of 8 artificial tunnels, 2 natural tunnels, 2galleries, 2 viaducts and 2 bridges.

Among the principal projects:

• The 6 km long double tunnel between San Ruffillo and the Central Station. Itis cut by two large mechanical “moles”, each of which is around 200 m long. These machines, which are also known as mechanical boring machines, arecapable of excavating 10-15 metres of tunnel a day, in comparison to the 2-3metres permitted by normal excavation methods.

• Two new bridges over theRiver Reno, located alongsidethe rail bridge on the presentBologna-Milan line. The firstbridge, to the north of theexisting one, will carry one ofthe two new high speed lines(the other will run over theexisting bridge), while thesecond, which is alreadycompleted, presently provides adouble-track connectionbetween Bologna Station andthe Bologna-Pistoia (Porrettana)line.

• Interconnections. The high speed line is connected to he existing line bymeans of two interconnections: The San Ruffillo interconnection is composedof two tunnels located in the municipalities of Pianoro and San Lazzaro diSavena; the Lavino interconnection runs entirely in the territory of themunicipality of Anzola and is composed of two branches connecting the newhigh speed line to the Belt line and the existing line. Inside the junction, nearto the Engine Depot (located between the City Hospital and Via Agucchi) willbe two further interconnections: one with the Padua-Venice line and one withthe line for Verona.

Expansion of theBologna Junction

The expansion and reorganisation of the Bolognarailway junction, made possible y the constructionof the new high speed lines, will allow us toexpand the Regional Railway Service (SFR) and theMetropolitan Railway Service (SFM). The junction’soffering of services will more than double. In orderto optimise traffic control in the junction, a modernControl System (SCC) will be installed. Bolognawill thus be able to reorganise and expandits entire system of railway connections.

The MetropolitanRailway Service

With the construction of the highspeed line through the city, the existing lines will becompletely dedicated to regional, local and goodsservices. The Metropolitan Railway Service will beexpanded, thus providing a network of services to theentire city, designed particularly to servecommuters within the city and between thecity and the province. The eight linesconverging on Bologna Centralefrom all directions will be able torun not only national and regionalservices, but also metropolitanconvoys, with a capacity of 50,000passengers a day compared to thepresent 5,000. The project providesfor the construction of 13 new stops,of which 9 will be within the city limits. The service will be more frequent, withtrains running every 15/30 minutes in a radiusof 30 km around the city, centred on the CentralStation. The planned construction of Line 1 of themetro-tramway between the Bologna Fair districtand Borgo Panigale will further increase the capacityof the overall rail transport system. The newmetropolitan stop at the railway station and the headstation for electric busses (running east to west) in PiazzaXX Settembre will contribute to making the CentralStation the main interchange junction for the entireBologna metropolitan area.
