Early next semester, the Student Activities Board will bepartnering with DanceBlue for an unprecedented concertbenefiting the Pediatric Oncology Clinic here at UK. Theconcert will feature rock/power-pop singer Eric Hutchinson.
DanceBlue is a year-long fundraising effort thatculminates in an annual 24-hour no sitting, no sleeping dancemarathon each Spring. Funds raised from Dance Blue benefit
the Golden Matrix Fund and the Pediatric Oncology Clinic atUK’s Hospital. Dancers will pile into Memorial ColiseumMarch 5-6, 2010 for this year’s event. This is the fifth yearanniversary of this event. The past four years, the organizationhas raised over $1.4 million for the cause which makes Dance Blue the fastest growing collegiatephilanthropy in the country
Every year the cause and organization grows, improving and getting bigger and better than in yearspast. This year Justin Linne, Dancer Programming Chair, came up with the idea of a benefit concert forDanceBlue. After discussing various artists, the organization decided they wanted to pursue bringingEric Hutchinson to campus, Dance Blue knew they would need help to host the event and that’s whereSAB comes in. SAB and DanceBlue, both housed in the Office of Student Involvement, have partneredin the past for the annual Homecoming 5k Run, so the collaboration between the two seemed naturalwhen Linne brought the initial idea to SAB.
Being a part of SAB is a great way to work alongside motivated and driven students, and collaboratebetween other campus groups helps align these passions to work toward a common purpose.SAB will be donating their programming expertise including some funding to the event, while DanceBluewill contribute their time and manpower to both market and help run the show.This collaboration benefits the students and the general public as well; they’ll have the unique chanceto give back while attending a great night of entertainment, as profits from the show will go towards theGolden Matrix Fund.
Eric Hutchinson recorded and released his album, Sounds Like This, on his own. It garnered muchpraise from the online community, most notably from celebrity-blogger Perez Hilton, which helped thealbum debut at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. His single “Rock and Roll” has helped him gainnotoriety, being named a “VH1 You Oughta Know” Artist and an AOL’s “About To Pop” Artist.
The concert will be held in the Student Center Harris Grand Ballroom on February 4th, 2010. The
show will be at 8 PM. The tickets, which will be $15, will be available at the Student Center Ticket Office,and can be purchased by cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, or PLUS Account. Tickets may also bepurchased online at TicketMaster.com.
Eric Hutchinson is sure to entertain, so don’t hesitate to buy your tickets! Come out and enjoy anevening sponsored by the Student Activities Board and DanceBlue, and feel good about givingback to your community and the Golden Matrix Fund.
Ever wonder what it would be like to work in the music business?Maybe even start a major music festival? This spring students will
have a unique opportunity to hear firsthand just what it’s like whenthe Student Activities Board brings the captivating Kevin Lymanto speak at UK.
Lyman is the brains behind the widely popular pop-punk and metal coreVans Warped Tour. Since it first began in 1994 as a small, somewhatunsuccessful tour, The Warped Tour has grown into one of the largest, mostrecognized musical extravaganzas of our time with acts such as My Chemical
Romance, The All American Rejects, Blink-182, and the Deftones. During theWarped Tour, each band plays up to 30 minutes on over 10 stages and hasfeatured as many as 100 bands per show.
Along with the Warped Tour, Lyman has created and been apartner in several other music productions including the Taste of
Chaos Tour, the Mayhem tour, and Sideonedummy Records. ConcertCommittee Director Chris Duncan says, “He is a marketing genius andSAB is very proud to be bringing such a highly experienced andknowledgeable person.”
Bringing Lyman to the University of Kentucky will also mark a milestonefor SAB’s Concert Committee, as this will be the first time in five years that they
have brought a speaker to campus. Not only will Lyman being giving a freelecture open to all but he will also be going inside the classroom to speak
to several Marketing and Communications classes about eventplanning and working within the music industry.

The Student Activities Board (SAB) will belaunching their first commercial in early spring!Created by the Large Projects Committee andthe Promotions team, SAB has been planning,scripting, and casting during the course of thefall semester. For the beginning process, theLarge Projects committee collaborated andpresented four ideas for the new commercial tothe Executive Board. It was agreed upon that thebest idea for our first commercial is paralleling the 2009 Super Bowl “Career Builder” commercialwith the new 2010 SAB commercial. The comical outlook on student life is sure to have you rollingon the floor!
After the commercial idea was concrete, the script had to be completed in two weeks witheach scene vividly described including camera view, scene setup, narrator, and actors. During thetwo weeks of scripting, the Large Projects Committee collaborated and planned the commercialdetails, while also looking for potential actors, all of whom are SAB members. The Committeesubmitted the script, and it was then formally presented at an SAB meeting where the commercial
passed with more than a two-thirds member vote.With the details now in place, the final product was completed with the help of Wildcat Student
Television, UK’s official student-run television station. The commercial, which begins airing inFebruary, is extremely exciting for SAB and hopes to continue the branding efforts of the Board.We hope that you spot our commercial during UK 101 classes, Cheap Seats, Wildcat Student TV,SAB’s website, and Youtube. This commercial will be an excellent contribution to further thepromotional efforts of the Student Activities Board by keeping close to the SAB motto, “There isalways somethin’ goin’ on!” As quoted by Anthony Marshall from the Large Projects Committee,“Students will find the commercial hysterical. The commercial will broaden what SAB means andit is going to be a great promotional tool!”

The Fall semester was not only the beginning of the 2009 school year, but a chance to show off anew look for SAB on their redesigned website. “It’s a completely redesigned look. We preserved someof the back-end stuff, but for the most part it’s completely new,” said Director of Web Design, MattHudgins.
Aside from wanting a different look, the decision to redesign the site came from the desire to
make it more usable and convenient for the visitors. The older version consisted of a list of events alltogether and a section for the new events. There was no sidebar and not all of the pages wereconsistent with the design carrying over from one page to the next.
Now, the site is more navigable and user-friendly. In the “Upcoming Events” section, there is anupdated list of up to five upcoming events SAB has put together along with a rotating slideshowfeaturing posters and information regarding these events. There is a “Poll of the Week” where visitorshave the option of giving their input about people or events they would like to see come to theuniversity. A “Suggestion Box” allows users to leave anonymous comments. Just below, there is theoption to leave your email address to be added to the weekly low-down of what’s going on aroundcampus.
Matt redesigned the entire site on his own. There was no shortage on the amount of hard workand hours put into this project. “One of the things that I put a lot of heart and soul into was the content
management system so that nobody has to go in and code another page for each event. There is alsoan entry page for each person to easily add information for their events,” he said.
Basically, this means it is easier for SAB directors to log-on to the site in order to add and editinformation regarding the events that their committees put on, making the information more readilyavailable and customizable. Corey Ballard is a fourth-year student from Huntington, West Virginia. AnUndergraduate English Minor, Corey is currently pursuing his Master’s in Communicationthrough the University Scholars Program. His parents, Scott and Leigh, still reside in WestVirginia while his older brother, Quinn, is a musician in Nashville, TN. Corey originally joined
the board in the role as a Cinema Committee Chair in 2008. As President, Corey hasenjoyed the numerous connections he has formed during his time on the board as well as
the long-lasting friendships and life skills he has acquired.In his free time, Corey works at PF Chang’s
China Bistro, enjoys football, traveling,and the Boston Red Sox.
