Welcome to my sixteenth edition of the Blower, the monthly magazine of the Bathurst Light Car Club and welcome to all new readers. Winter is a great time to get into motorsport with plenty of action this month from Hillclimb to Supersprint. We take a look at the action from the very wet Grafton round of the NSW Hillclimb Championships with plenty of BLCC Members in the hunt for points. We also take a brief look at the BLCC Conrod Straight Supersprint which weather wise was a very cool affair and a look at the June Khanacross event. The historic Winton Festival of Speed comes up next month and we take a preview of what is in store. Organisation for the next Motorkhana and Khanacross is well underway as is preparations for the Esses Hillclimb to be held on the 20th August. As our Club becomes even more involved in staging events the call for qualified officials to help run these events is now louder than ever. If you are a Member and don’t compete, why not look at volunteering as an official? Your Club is able to provide assistance and training through CAMS to any able-bodied person willing to help undertake the large number of tasks required to make an event a success. Finally, may I again make the call again to readers to help reduce our ongoing production costs for the Blower by encouraging readers who are currently on the “snail mail” list to consider switching across to receiving the electronic version of the Blower as a faster and more colourful experience. Just let us know by any means and we can move you to the electronic list immediately. Till next month – safe motoring. Bob Lundie-Jenkins B.A. Editor BLCC Blower

PRESIDENTS REPORT FOR JULY 2017
Hello members and it’s good to be back – I apologise for the absence (domestic necessity) Co- driver had a few problems when the brake on her side didn’t work and there was no steering wheel - it was a challenge. Anyway, all good and back to business. I would firstly like to acknowledge and thank Scott Sims, Donna Sims and Rob Flood with others for looking after Club affairs and events in my absence – I missed 2 events that I would have liked to have attended for more than one reason. I also missed a couple of rallies. Apparently, I am reliably informed by the Vice President that my passport has been suspended – bugger. It appears that whilst there were a few minor administrative issues again associated with the running of Nulon Nationals, the overall outcome was acceptable - some refinements will need to be made prior to any future event that may be requested. My personal thanks to all officials and volunteers who contributed and allowed the event to proceed - the lower than anticipated Club member participation is regretted however understood. There has been some fallout associated with activity taken by a group outside the event jurisdiction and time parameters – this has been discussed with Council and is not impacting on BLCC relationships. Council are addressing the issue. The last Khanacross resulted in an issue coming to a head with necessary and required action being responsibly taken by those in charge. I hope the matter is now clearly understood and I thank all who attended/competed and enjoyed the event together with those who administered the event. We have a Motorkhana coming up on 23rd July and hopefully fine weather so we can deliver another great event – I unfortunately have to attend a reunion with some old school football mates in Gulgong. You don’t need me to enjoy the day as has been recently evidenced although I try to get to all Club events even though I don’t compete. The next Khanacross event is on 13th August so lots happening. Helpers will be as usual most appreciated by Committee and the members competing – thank you to those who have previously and continue to assist. As a last note on events, we have the Esses Hillclimb coming up on 20th August, not to be missed by both competitors, officials and volunteers. To that end can I ask again that members consider the future of the Club’s activities across all areas and give consideration to undertaking training to become a credentialed official at all Club events - there are a myriad of support tasks required for events and we need qualified officials. Please consider as many of our long-term officials are getting to “best before date”.

Don’t forget the General Meetings on last Wednesday of each month – bar opens about 7ish or a bit before and we turn the heaters on earlier in the afternoon. All registered Club Members are able to attend and it’s a great opportunity to meet other Members. Safe motoring. Mick Tuckey President

2017 RD 5 MANTIC CLUTCH “GRAFTON” HILLCLIMB
By Alan Barlow– NSW Hillclimb Website Editor
Neville Shears – Outright Winner
Heavy rain on the NSW North Coast over the May long weekend caused a
massive upset at Grafton’s Mountainview Hillclimb. Shock Horror – FTD was set
by a Road Registered car!
Matthew Read
Sydneysider Neville Shears grabbed the opportunity with both hands and put the famed qualities of his Nissan GTR-R35 (and no little skill it must be said), to great effect leaving the established favourites floundering in his wake. His
11
cracking first run of 56.36s was crucial to the result which has seen him acquire Hillclimb legend status.
Local driver Matthew Read (MTR1) continued the run of surprises in his unconventional FWD bike powered special, setting second fastest at 57.69s. At least the purists were relieved – it is an open wheeler after all!
An early tip with the bookies was Phil Heafey (Mitsubishi EVO) who tried hard but could only manage third outright with a best run of 57.60s. The 2016 NSW champion, Queenslander Dean Tighe gamely scrabbled for traction in the Dallara/Judd for a best of 58.24s (a class win) ahead of Dave Morrow (Krygger Suzuki).
Phil Heafey
Also travelling from Queensland were husband and wife team, Ken and Pauline (Fastest Lady) Graham, only fractions apart in the Datsun 1600. The good handling Datsun a good advert for the family business. Matt Halpin (Torana) was next putting one up on the duo of Doug Barry (Lola T8750) and Ron Hay (Synergy Dallara) as they rounded out the top ten.
The “Stealth Bomber” aka the Nissan Leaf with Duncan Handley aboard was next.
Other class wins went to Steven King (UberKart Reaper), Ken Norton (GRD), Neil DePau (Radical Prosport), Jeff Graham (MX5), Paul Finch (PRB), Grant Liddell (Datsun) and Stephen Sauer (Escort). Simon McDonald (Commodore) edged out John Gilbert (Commodore) in 3J over 3L.
Theo Poteris (Commodore) got the best of James Morrison (Commodore) in LM Imp excl FI, David Allomes claimed Late Model incl FI and AWD and Martin McLoughlin got the jump on Graham Orr (CRX) and Roger Harris (Elise) in RRNL.
12
Ken Norton
The trying conditions provided a reward for those who were willing to chance their arm or as Neville Shears commented later “He who dares wins”.
With just three rounds to go Doug Barry leads the Mantic Clutch NSW Championship on 53 points ahead of Malcolm Oastler, Ron Hay closely followed by a fella named Shears. The next round is Tamworth July 16.
It was about as wet as it gets but full marks to Graham Merry and the crew at GSCC. A few spins but no major delays or heavy damage.
WINTON PREPARES FOR THE FESTIVAL OF SPEED
The eighth running of the historic Winton Festival of Speed hits Winton Motor
Raceway next month.
A 300-plus field of historic cars from the '40s through to the '90s are set to race
at the Winton long track for the Winton Festival of Speed, on 5-6 August.
The Festival of Speed first appeared on the Winton calendar in 2010 and has
since grown into one of the best-attended historic events of the year.
Organised as a joint venture between Winton Motor Raceway and the Victorian
Historic Racing Register (VHRR), the Festival of Speed is growing in competitor
and spectator numbers year on year.
13
At the top of the event is the Just Cars Touring Car Cup for Group N Historic
Touring Cars, a 50km feature race that sees iconic V8 muscle cars of the 1970s
(Ford Mustangs Falcon GTHOs, Chevrolet Camaros, Valiant Chargers and
Holden Monaros) competing against smaller and more nimble cars of the era
such as Holden Torana XU1s, Ford Escorts and Alfa Romeo GTVs.
The powerful tin top V8s are expected to lead the way early, but will also be
harder on their brakes and tyres over the 17-lap journey so the lighter vehicles
will be at their heels towards the end, setting up the prospect of an exciting finish.
Festival of Speed race director Peter Donald said the Just Cars Cup was an
exciting addition to the program in 2016.
“Fans who attend historic race meetings always enjoy the spectacle and sound
of muscle cars being hustled around a technical racetrack like Winton, and
Historic Touring cars appeal to fans of all ages," Donald said.
“There are the people who grew up with those sorts of cars, but there are also
the younger generations who are fascinated by the older vehicles.”
The Festival of Speed will again include a feature race- the 15-lap Rose City
Sports Car Trophy-, for Group S historic production sports cars including
Porsche 911s, various MG models, Corvettes and De Tomaso Panteras.
14
A new addition is a special speed event for Bathurst era Group C tribute and
muscle cars from the 70’s and 80’s, otherwise known as classic tin tops. Also
on the schedule will be the Victorian MG Racing Series, Group P, Q and R
Sports and Racing, Group M and O Sports and Racing, Group J,K and Lb races,
and historic Formula Ford and Formula Vee.
A number of high-profile drivers are set to compete in the event.
SUPERSPRINT A COLD AFFAIR By The Editor
The BLCC Conrod Straight Supersprint while run in bitterly cold conditions was certainly hotly contested on track with all three podium finishers separated by just 100ths of a second.
Steven Parashis scored the outright win with a 48.18 in
his fifth run of the day. Tim Burt was second outright with a 48.52 and in third place was Chris Weir with a 48.75.
A total of 42 competitors fronted the starter for eight double car runs down the high speed Conrod Straight with
the finish line on Pit straight. Although the podium represented three different
15
classes, each car was over 4,000 cc reflecting the impact of the fastest stretch of raceway in Australia.
Undoubtedly, this was a day for grunt power as was demonstrated by the number of entries in the over 4000 classes.
However, that did not mean that competitors in the less powerful vehicles didn’t get a trophy with 14 different classes contested through the event.

JUNE KHANACROSS ACTION
By The Editor
A cool clear Bathurst day met the 22 competitors for the June BLCC Khanacross
at the Quarry and the action was
frantic.
Overall winner on the day was
Mathew Paul in his Honda Civic with
Stephen Muggleton in the Subaru
Liberty in second place with Alan
Paul in his Honda Civic taking third
place.
Junior Winner was again Harrison
Ford in a Subaru Liberty with Izak
Berrisford in another Liberty in
second with Nick Cox in third place.
The Bathurst Light Car Club
conducts a Khanacross event every second month with Motorkhana’s held in
the alternate month.
This gives competitors the
opportunity to improve their
skills and car control around dirt
tracks prepared specifically to
test cornering and car
manoeuvrability.
Junior drivers are particularly
encouraged to participate and
can have a more experienced
driver with them if they wish.
Points are allocated at each
event which accumulate
towards a Club Championship,
the results of which are
announced at the end of year
Presentation Evening.
18
As is the case with all BLCC events, volunteers are required to act as
scrutineering officials, Clerk of
Course, Stewards, Event Secretary,
Timekeepers, course setters and
barbeque operators.
In all a normal event will engage at
least 10 volunteer Club Members in
official roles with some work required
as early as six in the morning till late
afternoon to ensure the event runs
smoothly.
This commitment to making sure that
BLCC events are run as professionally
as possible requires dedicated and
hardworking Club Members and
their efforts are often not fully
appreciated by competitors and
event participants.
If you are reading this report and
you are a Club Member who has
an interest in the future of your
Club but is currently not involved
in the official side of the Club’s
business, why not consider putting
your hand up and volunteering to
help your Club.
CAMS Official qualifications can
be obtained online by registering
your details and completing a short induction training course. Don’t just be a
spectator, get involved.
