Activity 2. What are the parts of the blood and its function?

    What to do:

    1. Study the illustration of the solid parts of the blood.

    2. Read and learn more about them.

    Red blood cells (erythrocytes)

Are the most numerous and make upalmost half of the bloods volume

Are filled with hemoglobin whichenables them to carry from the lungs

and deliver it to all body tissues. Oxygen is used to provide energy to

cells, leaving carbon dioxide as a waste

product, which the red blood cells

carry away from the tissues and back

    to the lungs.

Are produced in the red marrow of thebones.

    White blood cells (leukocytes)

are fewer in number with a ratio ofabout 1 WBC to every 660 RBC.

protect the body against infections bychanging their shapes so that they can

    move through capillary walls and

    surround foreign organisms entering the

    body.

produce antibodies to protect the bodyagainst diseases.

one of 5 kinds (basophil, eosinophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and neutrophil).

are produced in the bone marrow, thelymph nodes and the spleen.

    Platelets (thrombocytes)

are cell like particles smaller that red orwhite blood cells

help seal the blood vessel and stopbleeding.

    Release substances that help promoteclotting.

Produce blood clot with the help ofvitamin K and calcium.

    Plasma

consist of mostly water containingdissolve salts and protein (mostly

    albumin and antibodies).

carries hormones, electrolytes, fats, sugar, minerals and vitamins to the

    I LEARNED THAT:

The blood is a combination of liquid, cells, and cell like particles that travels

through the arteries, capillaries and veins.

Blood delivers oxygen and essentials nutrients to tissues and carries away carbon

    dioxide and other waste products.

    1. Lina has a big wound. After a few seconds, it stop bleeding. Can you tell why?

    2. What will happen if your body lacks red blood cells?3. Why people die if they lose too much blood?
