DIPOLOGMingling Industry and Lovely Scenery

Dipolog is the provincial capital of Zamboanga Del Norte in the Philippines. It is one of the many cities that you will find in the island of Mindanao. Rolling hills and the waters of the sea beautifully encompasses the city. North of Dipolog is Dapitan City, which is also another highly recommended place to visit. Dipolog City claims two popular titles, first is being the Philippines' orchid city and second that of being the country's capital of bottled sardines. Wild orchids are abundant within the city's area. You will find that many households here will have orchids growing in the yards. Since fishing is also a huge industry in the city, the production of bottled sardines is also a strongly growing enterprise.

Dipolog or Dapitan? Dipolog City was once a part of Dapitan before the Spanish arrived in the Philippine islands. The early settlers of the land were known as the tribe of the Subanen. The place was known as Tulwanan at the time. The name Dipolog was taken from the local term Di-pag, which literally translates to across the river. It was mispronounced by the Spanish conquistadors, however the name was adopted by the natives. The town was granted the status of being a city of the Philippines in 1970.

Page 45: THE BLADES MAGAZINE PALARONG PAMBANSA COVERAGE

Attractions Here are several attractions and events you might find when you visit Dipolog City. The first one is a tiring 3003 step ascent known as the Linabo Climb. The site is not intended for those who are weak of heart, or even in the knees for that matter. The more than three thousand steps in Linabo Climb are not easily dismissed as an easy task. After the tough ordeal, however, one will be treated to breathe taking panoramic view of Dipolog City and Dapitan City. The climb up is in itself a wonderful treat as one goes through lush greenery. Dipolog is also known to many travelers for the fascinating and enticing tourist and historic sites in the city. Cogon Eco-Park truly amazes travelers who like to see the wonderful matured trees in the reforestation site. The city is also popular for its Sinulog Festival which is held every third Saturday of the first month of the year.

Breathtaking Nature Another endearing, especially for nature lovers, place to visit is Barangay Cogon's

Eco-Park. This is a reforestation area where various sorts of trees are grown and cared for. The Eco-Park is also home to different species of reptiles and birds. Mountaineers often pick the place as a great camping site. However, if you would just like to see the view then you can just lay back and relax in one of the picnic cottages.

Festivals Dipolog City has many feasts scheduled in an entire year. Probably the most famous among Dipolog's festivals is the Sinulog celebrated in January. Features of this event include street dancing and pageants. Katkat Sakripisyo is a summer festival where religious devotees go up the Linabo Climb for penitential rites. May also comes alive with different harvest rituals as the Pagsalabuk Festival is celebrated. Next we have the celebration of Dipolog City's foundation during the first week of July. This event is highlighted by beauty pageants, and cultural and sport events or competitions.

Transportation Like everywhere else in the Philippines, public transportation isn't much of a problem. The usual and traditional modes of transportation include jeepneys and motor tricycles. Other than these, you also have mini-buses and passenger vans, which promises a bit of a more comfortable ride. An interesting way to get around in Dipolog City, if you're a bit adventurous that is, is known as habal-habal. This is a single motor bike that ferries passengers through various destinations. The challenge is that there will be more than three passengers, sometimes five or even more are on, in one trip. Strutting around town with almost ten people on a single motor bike is an adventure in itself.

Dining in DipologThere are many places to eat in the city, but if you want to get away from all the fast food then here's a couple of places that might interest you. Jo's Chicken Inato, located along General Luna Street, is the place to go to try the best in Filipino Cuisine. It's an open-air restaurant, which is kind of cozy, and the meals here are not tight on the budget. Now if you're looking for fine dining, soothing music, ballroom dancing, and a variety of cuisine to choose from then head on to Remedios Restaurant in Rizal Avenue. If you're looking for a more private dinner then you can book one of their VIP rooms. Meal prices here are a bit expensive than average starting at P300.

TRAVEL INFO

Overview of Dapitan, PhilippinesInformation by Rough Guides

The scenic and peaceful north coast city of DAPITAN, with its red-roofed houses and sweeping ocean bay, has appeal for anyone interested in recent Philippine history, as well as being a good base for exploring the coast of Misamis Occidental, a little-explored province with some remote beaches and friendly fishing villages. The beaches aren't white and endless, but the whole coastline from Ozamis to Dipolog is unspoiled and untouristy and a good area to explore at your leisure. The main drag in Dapitan is Sunset Boulevard, a romantic seafront promenade where you'll find banks, shops and a number of hotels. Most of the limited tourist attractions are Rizal-related (see below). The Rizal Shrine (Tues– Sun 9am–4pm; P20) on the northern edge of the city in an area known as Talisay is a pleasant parkland area encompassing the grounds where Rizal spent his exile. The park contains faithful reproductions of the simple cottage he lived in, the octagonal schoolroom where he taught, his chicken house and two clinics. The Rizal Museum (Tues– Sun 10am–4pm; P10) is also here, and contains memorabilia such as books, notebooks and medical equipment. To get here either take a tricycle from the city centre or walk – it's only ten minutes away on foot across Bagting Bridge with Dapitan Bay on your left. The national hero was nothing if not versatile. He also designed – from memory – a huge grass relief map of Mindanao that still exists today in F. Saguin Street, close to St James's Church where he regularly used to worship.

Dapitan - A Hero’s City Dapitan City, labeled as the “Shrine City of the Philippines”, is located in the province of Zamboanga del Norte on the northwestern coast of Mindanao. It is known as such because it is where national hero Jose Rizal lived during his four-year exile in 1892. Rizal’s home has since been made a shrine cum park, where replicas of the estate have been built in an effort to preserve history, including Rizal’s house, the dormitory and classroom for Rizal’s students.

The shrine has a museum that houses Rizal memorabilia: photographs of him growing up and of his family, a family tree detailing ancestors and next of kin, and a code of ethics which lists the hero’s own version of the commandments. A section is even reserved for photos of the women of his life! The Rizal Shrine, however, is only but a side trip to our real destination. It was summer after all, and the beach is where the action was at.

An escape from work to visit a place of

I woke up that morning to follow and cover the events in athletics of Palarong Pambansa 2011. That was the day our lady sprinter, Jennyrose Rosales will race the 100 meter track against the equally tough track racers of other regions.

“Sir, sa umaga po ang takbo ko sa 100 m, tapos sa hapon po time trial po sa 200 m. Ako po ‘yong best time sa time trial ng 100 kaya malaki po ang chance ko. Basta po morning di po namin tiyak ‘yong exact time.” Those words of Jennyrose from yesterday’s interview echo in my ears as I waited for a tricycle going to Dipolog City terminal. From the terminal I will take a baby bus and 20 to 30 minutes shall pass before I get to the place. I’m afraid to miss the event… I steadied my camera focusing the lens towards our bet in lane five. Bang! I could see through my camera’s lenses the gritting teeth of Jennyrose and how the muscles in her shoulders, arms, thighs and legs stiffened. Her innocent face was unmasked by an eager face of a warrior. After 12.38 seconds, it’s over… and I’m proud. I did not mind to answer the question of a reporter, “Hey sinong nauna?” I said to myself, it’s a mistake you did not focus your camera to CALABARZON’s bet. You may know who was the winner and still could write a good sports story about the event but minus a good photo of Jennyrose winning the race.

Being on the track oval of Jose Rizal Memorial University Stadium of Dapitan City one and a half hour before the race started was a relief. I took a chance to appreciate the red track of the field and smell the scent of its rubber cover. I still managed to shot actions of CALABARZON’s lady jumper and amused how the physically impaired athletes compete in the biggest sporting event of the country. The rays of the late morning sun makes irritating sweat, to sneak a break and breath fresh air is not bad I thought, then in my mind I asked, “Is the air fresher in Rizal’s place?” It was six days since I came in this place, I almost forgot what I promised to myself— I will visit Rizal’s place of exile.

exile

Page 61: THE BLADES MAGAZINE PALARONG PAMBANSA COVERAGE

A tricycle’s drive from Dapitan’s century church, where in front is laid the Mindanao ‘s map made by our hero, through the help of his former professor in Ateneo, brought me in the place. As I enter the area, being a teacher, I immediately look for the talisay tree where Dr. Rizal teaches his Dapitan pupils, but to my dismay I only found young talisay trees which are impossible to be the original talisay tree. Then, near the square hut, the dormitory of his growing pupils and their working area, I found a huge rotten trunk of a Talisay tree, it is not recognizable since it was covered by different ornamental plants on pots, and

Page 62: THE BLADES MAGAZINE PALARONG PAMBANSA COVERAGE
Page 63: THE BLADES MAGAZINE PALARONG PAMBANSA COVERAGE

in a low voice I said, “Siguro ito yon.” The talisay tree should matter, because that was the witness how the mind of our hero being a teacher, met the minds of his pupils. If you are a teacher, you will also feel elated seeing the 3 feet by 2 feet rectangular board and a small wooden table used by our hero in his classes. A teacher like our hero is a teacher in every place and in every situation. As an exile, he didn’t kill his self in boredom, instead the genius spilled from his being. Before, I only read this in the book, how his ingenuity transformed the dripping waters from the mountain slope, to be the water source of his place in Dapitan. He marvelously engineered the water dam connected with bamboo pipes to supply continuously flowing water for his plants and trees. Now, I could imagine how the genius worked on this effort with the help of his pupils. His place is a piece of land in the foot of the mountain, where verdant green grow. The trees are musical means to produce soothing sounds from wind’s gentle blow. Inside his house with wooden floor and a veranda made of bamboo, you will hear the soft dripping water from the mountain side synchronize by nocturnal sounds will surely calm the tired body and spirit. The land extends to the soft sands of the beach, where life’s pains and sorrows will wash away as the waves kiss your feet. Overlooking Dapitan shore is a huge rock where a late afternoon romance over the light shadow of a setting sun is inviting. This rock maybe the silent witness and a couch of our hero and the woman of his interest during their intimate moments. The place invites everyone to take a breath and savor the natural space to commune with own self and realized the benefit of the time being there. As I sit on the bamboo step of the working hut, I could imagine the teacher with his pupils singing the Talisay hymn and I envy those pupils. From my place looking upward I could see the doctor tending his patients in one of the two huts as clinic for

Page 64: THE BLADES MAGAZINE PALARONG PAMBANSA COVERAGE

man and woman. Shifting my place to look over the sea, I could imagine the doctor with his boat going to the town to treat his patient or to attend a Sunday mass.Pieces of Rizal’s clothing, photos of some of his girls, entomology of the hero, photos of his pupils, replica of his some art works could be seen for free in the museum from your right as you enter the historical place. From the entrance, security guard will greet you with unintelligible words but his smiles will encourage you to enter deep and visit the hero’s place. The two hours of escape from my work to the hero’s place of exile is worth seven pesos for a tricycle ride and maybe a reprimand from my boss. But it is an experience worth telling to my pupils how this avid fan of Rizal once visited the place of exile of his idol. Michael T. Villaluna

Dakak Park & Beach Resort has a homey tropical feel, Philippine fiesta style. The private 750-meter beach is on a beautiful cove with fine white sand. The beach is converted into a dining area at night, where tables are set up so guests can enjoy a buffet of grilled seafood and other Philippine delicacies while watching the entertainment onstage--a cultural dance show featuring local talents. The resort rests on 15 hectares of lush greenery. And to emphasize the back-to-nature feel of the place, natural spring water is used for the resort’s swimming pools. The place also offers various activities for the adventure seeker: you can scuba dive at one of the many dive sites nearby, jetski, waterski, go cove hopping, or even do some cave exploration. If you opt to stay indoors, you can go bowling, sing your heart out at the karaoke bar, play tennis at the courts or hang out at the billiards hall. The resort accommodations were satisfactory. The

native style cottage bungalows are made up of a main bedroom with a connecting toilet and bath. Each room

is equipped with the basics: airconditioning, a TV, and a mini-bar. Simple, comfortable and hassle-free.

The facilities, obviously, haven’t been renovated in a while, but it still makes for a comfortable stay.

I’d recommend Dakak for nature lovers who want to escape to a quiet place and lounge around, but also want the

option of enjoying water sports and other outdoor activities. It is a good place to bring the family. My relatively low expectations were exceeded: the place is a thing of beauty, and I’d go back if given a chance.

So, make sure that you are capable of finishing the hike before you go to the Linabo 3003 Steps. Make sure that you are wearing light clothes and the right footwear. Avoid heavy backpacks if possible. You will find a small convenience store at the base of the mountain. Make sure you have food and drinks to take along with you.

It is easy, however, to finish the hike. You will also find benches along the way, so you could always rest whenever you feel like it. You could expect, however, that you would have painful and throbbing legs at the end of the hike.

T h e r e are 14 stations that you will pass by on the way to the end of the stations. However, the Mt. Linabo 3003 Steps only cover the Stations of the Cross. You will not reach the peak of Mt. Linabo. You will have to go further if you want to reach the top of Mt. Linabo. This will take you through boulders. Of course, there are trails that you can follow. If you intend to hike further than the 3003 steps, it might be a good idea to have friends or companions to go with you. If you want a view of the entire Dipolog City, you should consider pushing further than the 3003 steps. The view at the top is certainly worth the

hard work.

On-The-Trail Hiking TipsPreparation

• Reduce pack weight—don’t bring it, if you don’t need it. e.g., If there's water along the way, filter water rather than car-rying it to drastically reduce pack weight. • Tell someone where you're going and for how long.• Mountain weather can turn on a dime—make sure you have appropriate rain gear.• Hydrate before setting out.• If it’s hot out, wear light-colored clothing, and hike in a thin, moisture-wicking base layer to absorb and dry your sweat.• Leave a change of clothes in your car. If you're wet at the end of your trip, you can have a dry ride home.

Things to take

• Duct tape. From clothing to gear, it fixes just about anything.• Extra hipbelt buckle for your pack. If your pack has a top lid that converts into a lumbar pack, often its buckle can serve as a spare for your hipbelt.• A stuff sack makes a perfect pil-low case. Stuff your lightweight fleece (or a Nuptse if it's colder) into a stuff sack to make a pil-low. • The spork is key. Light-weight, multi-purpose utensil. • Avoid cotton. Once it’s wet, it’ll stay that way, and you’ll freeze.• Don't forget your Ursack if you're in bear country. • A pocket knife or multi-tool is an abso-lute must.• Hydration packs

all the way. Forget water bottles!• Take extra shoe laces for your boots—the cheap drugstore kind will do. Pop ’em in your pack and keep them there forever.• Keep quick energy handy, like a Carb Boom in your pocket. Many of us swear by this stuff.• At the very least, take a basic first-aid kit.

Technique

• Use the Rest Step: When ascending steeper terrain, lock your back leg at the knee and pause briefly before taking your next step to reduce muscle fatigue. It works!• Remember to pump out your water filter after each use so you’re not carrying extra weight. • Eat before you get hungry and drink before you get thirsty. You’ll be less likely to bonk.• Eat a series of small meals rather than a couple

of large meals to keep energy levels consistent.• During extended rests, loosen your shoes and

put your feet up to reduce swelling and give them a nice rest.

• Carry a spare handkerchief to dip in cool streams and spread over your neck, forehead, etc. for a quick

cool down.

Zamboana Del Norte, Dapitan City –After Manny Pacquio’s impressive performance against Sugar Shane Mosley, athletes of Palarong Pambansa 2011 demonstrated the same elegant act as they remain in the open field despite of heavy downpour cause by typhoon “Bebeng” during the opening ceremony of Palarong Pambansa 2011, May 8.

Heavy rain came before the parade of more than 10,200 athletes and delegates from 17 regions, causing minutes of delay

This year’s Palarong Pambansa is concerned about fair play and unity as well as taking care of the environment as expressed by Vice-Pres. Jejomar Binay being the keynote speaker of the occasion. “Lahat tayo ay may obligasyon sa Poong Maykapal na pangalagaan ang ating kapaligiran at lubos na tungkulin ng pamahalaan at pamahalaang lokal, lahat ng mamamayan, mapa-bata man o matanda ay may dapat gampanan sa pangangalaga ng ating kapaligiran,” Binay said. Vice President urged the athletes to stand united and excel not only in sports but also act in protecting the environment.“Dahil dito, labis akong umaasa na sa palarong ito ay matutunan ninyo magbigay pakundangan sa kapakanan ng ating kapaligiran.

Maging maalam, makialam at umaksyon. Ipakita ninyo na ang mga kabataang atleta ay hindi lamang mahusay sa palakasan kundi may taos pusong pagkalinga rin sa ating kalikasan,” Vice Pres expressed. Skydiving exhibition courtesy of Philippine Army Parachute Team headed by Col. Eliglen F. Villaflor made the occasion more exciting but heavy rain continued to pour after the entrance of less than half of the delegations in the oval field. Palarong Pambansa was once held in Zamboanga del Norte at Dipolog City year 1982, after 28 years, Dapitan City the Shrine City is the residence of more than 10,000 athletes and delegations from different parts of the country.Billeting quarters of different delegations are schools in Dipolog

Discipline is a virtue to possess by any athletes to shine in every sport competition; CALABARZON proved that they have plenty of it.

CALABARZON claimed to be the Most Disciplined delegation as they showed how they followed the strict ruling of Palarong

during the closing ceremony at JRMSU, Dipolog City, May 14. Part of the things to be considered in selecting the most disciplined delegation is how the athletes and coaches behaved on and off the game, as well as the way they carry themselves amongst the other delegations.CALABARZON was a consistent Most Disciplined delegation from 2008 to 2010. To capture the Best Saludo award also needs considerable effort and discipline to present a perfected one minute dance-chant-salute during the opening ceremony of the Palaro. CALABARZON succeeded

to gain the approval of the judges when they perfectly delivered their wit and grace in making salute before 10,000 spectators from the different part of the country. CALABARZON athletes and coaches did not divulged to heavy rains and muddy ground in showing their talents, through the strict guidance and leadership of coaches Sheirbert G. Mercado and Rex G. Ramos both from Batangas Province, the men responsible for CALABARZON to shine in Best Saludo performance.(Michael Villaluna with Domcar Lagto)

Reinvention of v a l u e s

This year’s Palarong Pambansa idea of focusing not only in the discovery of young’s talents in sports but also infusing values to the heart of would be leaders of the nation is effectively realized. Tracking the streets of Dipolog City and the billeting quarters of athletes and delegations, we will find those places tidy and litter free. From the previous Palarong Pambansa it is normal to find accumulated wastes in the venues where the events were held, because of the bulk of people coming in the place. Plastics, Styrofoam and other wastes are with them and that became a perennial problem of the host municipality. But during and after the Palarong Pambansa in Dapitan we proved that we can bring back the harmony between environment and man. During the closing ceremony it was disclosed that 50% cut on waste was achieved. The idea of the Department of Education to “Go Green” during the Palarong Pambansa was synchronized with Dapitan City. It is the place where a person will think twice before throwing anything on the street, not only because of their city ordinance 123 of punishing anyone who will litter but because we can never see garbage on and along the streets for us to learn that no one in Dapitan litters and we too as visitors should learn the values of its people. The encouragement of the Department to use washable materials in replace of Styrofoam or disposables during the Palaro had saved thousand of pesos for the different delegations and to the Palarong Pambansa National fund as well. Even the courtesy of the athletes by means of their “saludo” and “pagbati” are transformational and yet honest and sincere. Our regional variation and differences are not

hindrance to communicate our ideas but those were became avenues of values for us to know and understand more each other. Filipino values are not hard to revive, all we need is a way to regain and remind the values innate to every one, like what Palarong Pambansa has done. After regaining those values, recurrent use of it will help us until those will become our habit for the development of our nation.

I N P U R S U I T I N A C T I O NPHOTOGRAPHER IN FOCUSDOMCAR CALINAWAN LAGTO“PHOTOGRAPHY HAS OPENED MY EYES TO BOTH THE WONDERS AND MADNESS OF THE WORLD. I WOULD LIKE TO CAPTURE EACH AND EVERY IMAGE BOTH IN MY MEMORIES AND IN CAMERA. THIS IS THE WORLD AS I SEE IT.” –Domcar Lagto

He finds Zamboanga one of the most fascinating destinations in the country and the inspiration that has earned him a commendation in the Action Category and “The Blades Magazine.” Mr. Lagto was first introduced to the craft three years ago when he felt drawn to the backdrop used photojournalism in teaching. From a simple hobby, photography has developed into one of his passions and in just couple of years, landed him several recognitions from various photojournalism, magazines and school paper competitions in the Philippines. His early works include stunning sceneries shot in Nasugbu, Batangas, where he grew up. And having traveled the country, He finds Zamboanga one of the most interesting places to do action photography because of the “Palarong Pambansa.” He cites the amazing play of colors and light created during the game makes for a breathtaking image of the place and the players. As we known, photographers go to great lengths to capture that one great shot. He shares that one of the most memorable experience for him that proves this point was a trip to Tayabas Quezon for the coverage of the STCAA 2011. While shooting in different ways to get a better action and a better shot of the players, his foothold gave way forcing him to grab the root of a nearby tree to avoid falling. Learning from this experience, he also shares as a tip to aspiring photographers that is it important to do research and to have ample knowledge of the location where the shoot is to take place. Knowing what to expect, hat to look out for and what shots to take the prior the trip make more efficient use of one’s time and lessens the guesswork on whether

you’ll be able to capture the essence of the location. When asked about his signature styles as an action photographer, he relates that at first, budding photographers would emulate what they see and take inspiration from the masters of the craft. Eventually as their passion strengthens and their skills get honed, they find their own way in interpreting what they see. More than the skills and techniques , he believes though that a photographer should always have a vision, a concept in mind that he wants to communicate to his audience, even before taking that first shot. He shares that his style leans toward producing photos that capture and reflect the mood and emotion of the subject. Mr. Lagto shares his passion for the craft by providing workshops to aspiring photographers, photojournalists and hobbyists.

After 13 years, innocent looking Jennyrose Rosales of CALABARZON reset the record of Palarong Pambansa Secondary Girl’s 400 m run as she finished the race at 57.33 seconds amidst the cheering crowds of Jose Rizal Memorial University Stadium, May 12, here in Dapitan City. The 1998 record of 58.05 seconds was established by Jonah Genilsa of National Capital Region in Bacolod City Palarong Pambansa. A day before Gonzales broke the record in 400 m she already proved that she is the fastest women of Palarong Pambansa 2011, when she grabbed the gold medal in 100 m upsetting the crowd favorite Eloisa Luzon of

Western Visayas at 12.38 second finished. Batangas Province delivers 7 gold, surpasses last year’s record in Palarong Pambansa

Being one of the composing provinces of Region IV-A CALABARZON, Batangas Province took pride in delivering 7 gold, 9 silvers and 12 bronzes in the Palarong Pambansa 2011 at Dapitan City, Zamboanga Del Norte. In the last year’s national competition Batangas Province produced only 2 gold, 5 silvers and 6 bronzes. According to Mr. Joel Lubis and Dr. Leopoldo Landicho, Division Sports Coordinators the positive outcome of this year’s Palarong Pambansa could be

attributed to the collaborative effort of teachers, coaches and trainers as well as the support of Batangas Provincial Government and motivation of Mrs. Emma Bautista the Division School Superintendent. “Our annual plan and rigid training from the month of June until after STCAA helped greatly to achieve what we have now. We are also thankful that our Governor, Vilma Santos-Recto is in full support as well as the LGU’s,” said Mr. Lubis. Batangas Province gathered most of its gold in athletics, silvers

from gymnastics and bronzes in ball games. “We are planning to hold an intensive training for our coaches to be handled maybe of the best coaches of UAAP. This is to haul the potentials of our coaches and not to depend only on their instinct in coaching our athletes,” Mr. Lubis explained. Mr. Lubis also said that he will propose athletes’ scholarship grant to improve more the position of the Province in athletics competitions.

FISH PORT

ON ASSIGNMENT

DOMCAR LAGTO&MICHAEL VILLALUNA

In the right side of Dipolog’s boulevard, an old fish port was located. It looks like a port in our town in Wawa, Nasugbu, Batangas 15 years later. Fishing boats in different kinds, shapes and sizes gathered there to bring their catch for the day. They had different kinds of fishes but most of their catch we’re sardines. One afternoon with my co-leagues Mike and Joel, went to the port equipped with my DSLR, set of lens and tripod to capture the beauty of it. The beautiful and lovely sunset of Dipolog became my inspiration to take several shots and capture different angles of the sceneries. I set my camera in low shutter speed and long exposure to capture the mood of the scenery. I took different shots and angles of an old and broken port and its dramatic landscapes to share the photos with my friends.

NIGHTLIFE

ON ASSIGNMENT

DOMCAR LAGTO&MICHAEL VILLALUNA

Red, yellow, green and white, these are the colours we passed by during the night time of Dipolog’s boulevard. It’s quite different when we were jogged in the morning. The people were busy chatting with each other while enjoying their dinner in almost hundred of “carenderias” along the vicinity. We noticed that the locals here were very fascinated with the grilled foods. That’s why we can’t spend our time but to taste their delicacies. Different kinds of fishes (big and small), squids (dry and fresh), bbq., isaw and many more in affordable prices.

ON THESPOT

ON ASSIGNMENT

DOMCAR LAGTO&MICHAEL VILLALUNA

Photography is such a nice hobby and passion, but being a sports photographer is not a joke. This is our first time to cover a Palarong Pambansa, Mike and I were very excited when we knew that we were chosen to cover one of the biggest national event in sports in the country. Equipped with camera, pen and paper, knowledge and strength as journalists, we both said “Bro kaya natin to!” A week before we travelled to Zanorte, both of us made some researches to the place to become familiar on it. This event made us to become a real journalist. We experienced many things that helped us to become better. The heat of the sun and the cold wind brought by different weather in a week of coverage doesn’t become hindrances to bring articles and good photos for this magazine.

Page 265: THE BLADES MAGAZINE PALARONG PAMBANSA COVERAGE

Even if we are lack of equipments like DSLR and Video cameras, we did our best. Our team in “Bahay ni Kuya” gave us ability not to surrender in this battle. They also gave us inspirations to write articles not only for this magazine... but stories we can tell in our whole life. This assignment is not only a work for me... because those stories are stories that no writer can write and no one storyteller can tell... because it’s in our hearth and memory. “Tiwala lang Sir!”
