The Black Affairs Advisory Board (BAAB) was created in 1994 to articulate issues; address concerns and advocate on behalf of the Black World Community and report to the Board of County Commissioners. It is also charged with making its constituents aware of the tax supported services available through County government. The Board is comprised of civic minded members appointed by the thirteen (13) Miami-Dade County Commissioners, and serve in an advisory, non-compensatory basis.

The BAAB has several committees including: the Black Heritage Planning Committee; Education; Health Care; Housing; Economic Development; Budget and Finance; and Crisis Intervention/Respect Life. Some of the activities of these committees include:

Black History Month featuring a month-long celebration and award–winning exhibit featured in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observance

The Annual Pillars Awards and Young Pillars Scholarship Dinner

Sponsorship of “Village Dialogues” dealing with education; health; youth, elderly and domestic violence and financial preservation/protection.

The Black Affairs Advisory Board has joined with a coalition of community based organizations for the purpose of addressing school truancy, minority youth involvement in the juvenile justice system and youth violence. This initiative has resulted in a call to action for members of the Black World Community here is Miami-Dade County.

Crime affects each citizen in the area, but the Black community has been particularly hard hit. Members of the Respect Life! Coalitioninclude representatives from churches, community based organizations; local government officials and concerned citizens.

The Respect Life! Campaign is aimed at reducing violence, school truancy and preventing youth involvement in the criminal justice system while increasing opportunities for Miami-Dade County youth. The campaign has several major thrusts including:

*Reduction/Prevention Strategies to stem youth violence through “VillageDialogues—Generation Rap” and the use of an “ Anti-Violence Ambassador “ Robert Boseman, Jr., who is a survivor of gun violence. Through these “Village Dialogues/Generation Raps,” young people between the ages of 11-21 will have an opportunity to bear direct witness of the effect of gun violence from one of their peers, who will travel to speak to youth throughout the county.

*Establishment of a School Truancy Hotline and Diversion Centers —aimed at creating an atmosphere where truant students are retrieved and taken to centers aimed at discovering the causes of their truant behavior and finding ways to assist them or provide support services in a positive atmosphere.

For further information on the BAAB, call 305-375-4606 or visit our website at www.miamidade.gov/baab. To obtain services through Miami-Dade County, call 311.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S DESK

The Black Affairs Advisory Board has successfully undertaken the task of researching and compiling an extremely comprehensive listing of Black organizations operating within Miami Dade County. This compilation includes, to the best of our knowledge, virtually all of the active groups that make up the Black World Community in our county.

The Office of Community Advocacy is dedicated to promoting cooperative cross-cultural relationships between the diverse groups here in Miami Dade County, while enhancing the quality of life for all residents through intercultural awareness and understanding.

This directory is not merely a source of information, but an inspirational document that the Office of Community Advocacy and the Black Affairs Advisory Board hope will promote relationships, interaction, and cooperation among all the people who live, work, or travel in Miami Dade County.

Please use this guide regularly as you plan your activities. It is a valuable tool to facilitate the inclusion of others in your events.

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

This “Black World Guide” is one of many ways in which the Black Affairs Advisory Board seeks to affirm that the Black community in Miami Dade County is comprised of rich and diverse groups of peoples who are dedicated to uplifting and serving our community.

The genesis for this guide was the number of phone calls and requests made to our office for a “viable list of Black organizations.” We soon realized that such a list was fragmented or outdated and thus began the quest to formulate a comprehensive directory that would encompass the various groups that are represented in Miami Dade County.

We are hopeful that this publication will continue to grow and reflect the changing dynamics of the Black World Community who continue call Miami Dade County “home.”

CREATION

The genesis for the Black World Guide began as the number of phone calls to the office of the Black Affairs Advisory Board grew and the hunt was on to locate a list of “Black organizations.”

We soon realized that such a list was fragmented or outdated and thus began the quest to formulate this comprehensive “Black World Directory.”

It is—to say the least—a labor of love that has finally bore fruit. We are hopeful that this guide will continue to grow and show the diversity that represents the African Diaspora in Miami Dade County.

DISCLAIMER

The “Black World Guide” is our attempt to list the many organizations and programs in Miami Dade County. We have made every effort to be as comprehensive and inclusive as possible. We know however, that many worthwhile organizations or groups may have been inadvertently omitted. Please bring these omissions to our attention so that they can be included in the next edition. All listings are listed as a public service and their views or services are not necessarily endorsed by the Black Affairs Advisory Board.

SPECIAL THANKS…… Aside from being a “labor of love” this directory would not have been possible without the support of many people. Among them are:
