The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) ofCanada originated in Montreal, Quebec, on31 January 1862, when the '5th Battalion VolunteerMilitia Rifles, Canada' was authorized to be formed.1

It was redesignated: '5th Battalion, "The Royal LightInfantry of Montreal"' on 7 November 1862;2

and 'The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) ofCanada' on 1 July 1935.11 On 16 October 1953, it wasamalgamated with the '1st Canadian HighlandBattalion' and the '2nd Canadian Highland Battalion'(see below), retaining the same designation.12

On 1 August 1906, the regiment was organized as atwo battalion regiment with both the 1st Battalion and2nd Battalion on the Non Permanent Active MilitiaOrder of Battle (GO 125/06).

Thereserve units were disbanded on 14 December 1936(GO 3/37).

On 4 May 1951, the regiment mobilized twotemporary Active Force companies designated "E"and "F" (CAO 110-2, Pt 'B', Supp Issue No. 245/51and SD 1 Letter No. 4237, 5 May 1951). "E" Companywas reduced to nil strength upon its personnel beingincorporated into the '1st Canadian HighlandBattalion' for service in Germany with the NorthAtlantic Treaty Organization (SD 1 Letter No. 4365,12 November 1951). It was disbanded on29 July 1953 (CAO 78-2, Pt 'B', Supp Issue No.352/53). "F" Company was initially used as areinforcement pool for "E" Company. On15 May 1952, it was reduced to nil strength, upon itspersonnel being absorbed by the newly formed '2ndCanadian Highland Battalion' for service in Korea withthe United Nations (SD 1 Letter No. 4452,22 April 1952 and CAO 110-2, Pt 'B', Supp Issue No.283/52). "F" Company was disbanded on29 July 1953 (CAO 78-2, Pt 'B', Supp Issue No.352/53).

The 73rd Battalion, which was authorized on10 July 1915 as the '73rd "Overseas" Battalion,CEF',27 embarked for Great Britain on31 March 1916.28 It disembarked in France on13 August 1916, where it fought as part of the 12thInfantry Brigade, 4th Canadian Division until9 April 1917 when it was withdrawn from the line afterVimy and broken up to provide reinforcements.29 Thebattalion was disbanded on 19 April 1917.30

The regiment mobilized the '1st Battalion, The BlackWatch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, CASF'for active service on 1 September 1939.33 This unit,which served in Newfoundland from 22 June to11 August 1940, embarked for Great Britain on25 August 1940.34 On 6 July 1944, the battalionlanded in France as part of the 5th Infantry Brigade,2nd Canadian Infantry Division, and it continued tofight in North West Europe until the end of the war.35

The overseas battalion was disbanded on30 November 1945.36

Cette unité, servit à Terre-Neuve du 22 juin au11 août 1940 et s'embarqua pour la Grande-Bretagnele 25 août 1940.34 Le 6 juillet 1944, le bataillondébarqua en France, en tant qu'élément de la 5e

brigade d'infanterie, de la 2e division d'infanteriecanadienne, et combattit dans le Nord-Ouest del'Europe jusqu'à la fin de la guerre.35 Le bataillonoutre-mer fut dissous le 30 novembre 1945.36

The regiment subsequently mobilized the '2ndBattalion, The Black Watch (Royal HighlandRegiment) of Canada, CASF' for active service on18 March 1942.37 This unit served in Canada in ahome defence role as part of Atlantic Command.38

The battalion was disbanded on 15 August 1943.39
