Today’s Maths 5 sheet is all about deciding when it’s best to use a mental method and when it’s best to use a written method. You’ll need to look at the numbers in the questions carefully and think about if and how you could add/subtract easily in your head, perhaps rounding and adjusting, or whether the numbers are best suited to a written method. You’ll also need to explain your thinking.

Maths 1: Problem Solving

What cards in the envelopes?

A set of ten single digit cards, 0 to 9, have been placed into envelopes. Each envelope contains two of these cards.

The total of two cards inside the envelope is written on the envelope.

What card numbers could be in the ‘8’ envelope?

Some things to think about to help:

What are the possible ways of making the numbers on the envelopes?

Which number on the envelope has the fewest possible combinations? – It might be worth starting from this envelope and looking at what could be in the others.

If you’d like more help getting started:

“I think the ‘3’ envelope has to contain cards 1 and 2 or 3 and 0 because 1+2=3 and 3+0=3.

I shall choose one of these combinations and cross out those cards as they can’t be in any

other envelope. Right now, how could I make 7 with the remaining cards? I must

remember to cross out the cards as I use them because I can only use each one once.”
