Our elders are starting to form new small groups of members and friends. Each small group is going to be eight to ten people. Each group will determine its own system of communicating and meeting. But our focus is to increase communication and understanding within our congregation, especially between our members and friends with our Session. The elders did not choose their own small group. Instead, a key leader in the church, Frances Bordelon, divided up the congregation to equally balance the small groups with people of different ages and backgrounds. Expect to hear from an elder soon. And we hope you will get together with other people from your group. Our best way of impacting the community around us is to strengthen our own community by seeking God’s will for us together and simply knowing each other even better. Small groups will create greater transparency and communication and will help develop friendships. I believe if we successfully engage with this as a congregation, our community will discover the mission to which God is calling us. We also are excited to have Mark (Mac) McDonald and Butch McCracken join Parkway by reaffirmation of faith. We are sad to see Carol Emmert (Session/Stephen Ministry/ Teaching/Choir) head back to Ohio. She will be close to her mother again. Lee Emmert plans to stay down here for a bit while he handles the house, so we are glad he is with us a bit longer. We also are sad to see David (Session/Choir), Andie (Session/ Choir/SonRise/PNC), Bethany (Youth/Choir) and Robert (Youth) Porter head to Mississippi in June. We know their profession is calling them to a new area and a new church, and great things are in store for them. We will miss them all and are grateful for all they have done to share God’s love in this time and place. May God’s blessings be on each of you.

THE COMMUNITY PROGRAM by the Reverend Tom Paine

It has been exciting to see the process in motion as we continue to engage in our New Beginnings. Parkway chose the mission redefinition route of New Beginnings, and we are continuing to seek out what that specific mission will be. Our first major step was our successful Crime Summit, which we held for the community at the end of April. Our next step is to focus on our community a little closer to home.

HAIL AND FAREWELL

We are excited to have Steve, Sherry, Ashton, and Diane Kinler join Parkway! They have transferred their letter of membership to Parkway. We also are excited to have Mark (Mac) McDonald and Butch McCracken join Parkway by reaffirmation of faith.

We are sad to see Carol Emmert (Session/Stephen Ministry/Teaching/Choir) head back to Ohio. She will be close to her mother again. Lee Emmert plans to stay down here for a bit while he handles the house, so we are glad he is with us a bit longer.

We also are sad to see David (Session/Choir), Andie (Session/Choir/SonRise/PNC), Bethany (Youth/Choir) and Robert (Youth) Porter head to Mississippi in June. We know their profession is calling them to a new area and a new church, and great things are in store for them. We will miss them all and are grateful for all they have done to share God’s love in this time and place.

May God’s blessings be on each of you.

PARKWAY’S NURTURING MINISTRY

The Nurturing Ministry is charged with planning, scheduling, managing, and arranging the events at the church, other than worship and teaching. Also we nurture and support members in need. To better circulate our efforts, we will report the plans for future events and review results of past ones in our church newsletter. Our last committee meeting was on April 1, but April Fool’s Day seems to have faded from popularity, as no one reported any tricks played on them. Knox Presbyterian Mission Group from Rochester, N.Y. will stay at Parkway from May 3-9. We refer to them as Parkway North because

they have returned every year since 2006. We will have a dinner with them on May 7. We appreciated church members doing the laundry for them. We contribute to Sunday worship by scheduling the Minute for Mission speaker. Recently we added the responsibility of obtaining members or friends to read the Sunday lectionary readings during worship. Sigrid Cochran is in charge of readers. Perhaps that is an untapped gift you have. If you feel called to read God’s Word, please let Sigrid know. Sometimes we don’t realize how well someone can read aloud.

Pat Prewitt is heading a group who will sew pillowcase or T-shirt dresses for children in Haiti. She has loads of photographs of the children wearing their new dresses. It is another way to serve God’s children who live in poverty. Several people can’t wait to get started.

PROGRAM OF HOPE

HOMELESS MISSION

May is Parkway’s month to feed the patrons of Program of Hope at

First Presbyterian Church in New Orleans. We will make sandwiches

on May 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the hospitality area. Come

and help make delicious sandwiches for the homeless. If you have a

question, call Martha Bauman at (504)468-3091.

MEN’S MONTHLY BREAKFAST

Our next Men’s Club breakfast meeting will be on Wednesday, May 14th at Denny’s Restaurant on Veterans, east of the I-10 ramp at 7:00 a.m. We are always open to new, first-time attendees. It is an occasion to get to know others from Parkway Presbyterian who may have much in common and are willing to share with you. We share Christian fellowship, good stories, and have a hearty breakfast. Come join us if you can, any age is welcome to join us.

For our last breakfast in April the sky was bright and clear even though we were on Daylight Saving Time. The temperature was cool (52º). Our attendance was good at eight members, almost like a couple of years ago – so nice to have more gathered. Jack Bauman was there first. He was going to be preaching at the Chinese Presbyterian Church that Sunday. He was going to ask “What kind of auto would Jesus be driving?”... maybe a Fury or a Ram from biblical stories. He also joined an American Legion Post and is looking to get some participants in Program of Hope, our joint homeless mission. There was some interest. John Ruby told of his attendance at Tree Preservation Committee of Lafreniere Park. He told of Park group activities. Soccer is on the rise, with tennis in decline. The professional team Chicago Fire sponsors a soccer league in a big way. John added, “Pastor Tom was off playing Major Paine last week at his military exercise. It was a simulation of an Air Force hospital, patients and all. Tom tended to patients’ comfort and handling blankets.” New Orleans School System came up next. We all shared our experience with it. Several have been solving the Common Core test problems that have appeared in the Times-Picayune recently. Lee Emmert finally arrived after leaving his work place at the airport. He said he’s going to be moving back to Cincinnati Reds’ baseball territory. There was a flurry of baseball recollection comments here. Carol left today. She will stay with her mother in Dayton, Ohio while Lee stays here to work on home repair and sale. Tom Paine lived in Dayton, and young John moved there when he was 4. He misses the snow. (Tom does not.) Under a topic of “beer,” Pastor Tom described the Falstaff Brewery sign. She said it changed color with the temperature in his younger days. The brewery is now a condo. People are moving downtown to live, a change in cycle. Jack shared that First Presbyterian Church on Claiborne was a “move to suburbs” church in the 1890s (our bit of New Orleans history). There were good comments about the new program where members do the readings at our Sunday service. As we prepared to depart, Tom Smith said he had a wonderful Smartphone video of Bill Weissborn dancing with the young volunteers from Washington State, which he would share.

“Parkway Presbyterian Church is a congregation

of God’s people. Its purpose is to witness to God

and God’s love as revealed in Jesus Christ.”

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” So, whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
