• Mr Berry will try to reply to all queries either by email response or by phone on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th April or on Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th, Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th May.

• Students may also ask questions via their form tutors on the google classroom form class from Monday 4th May

The Year 8 into 9 option process.

• During year 9 students will begin to study GCSE courses in a number of key ‘core’ subjects.

• This will give them more time to prepare for the exams that they will be sitting at the end of these courses.

There are a number of subjects that all students will continue to study in year 9

These are called the ‘core’ subjects

There are a number of subjects that students will have some choice in what they will study

These are called the ‘option’ preferences

Students are asked to indicate four preferences:

• The GCSE Humanities preference (study this for the next 3 years)

• The GCSE Language preference (study this for the next 3 years)

• The Exam Option preference (study this for the next 2 years)

• The Curriculum Enrichment preferences ( study these for the next year only but students may choose one of them to study for a full examination course in years 10 and 11)

PREFERENCE ONETHE HUMANITIES PREFERENCE

• You must decide whether you prefer to study History or Geography at GCSE for the next three years.

• You may choose to study both if this is suitable.

• (If you choose to study two humanity subjects in years 10 and 11 you will not need to make another examination choice in January of year 9 )

PREFERENCE TWOTHE LANGUAGES PREFERENCE

• You must decide whether you prefer to study French, German or Chinese (a guided choice) at GCSE for the next three years.

• You may choose to study two languages if this is suitable.

• (If you choose to study two languages in years 10 and 11 you will not need to make another examination choice in January of year 9 )

PREFERENCES ONE AND TWOTHE DOUBLE HUMANITIES OR LANGUAGES

PREFERENCES • Any student that chooses to study either two

humanities or two languages may study both to full GCSE.

• You will still have one additional option choice this year if you choose to do this but you will not need to make another choice in year 9.

• You may choose to study double language anddouble humanity in year 9, but it will not be possible to continue with all four in years 10 and 11

• You will be asked to indicate which additional GCSE or Vocational subject you would like to consider studying during years 9 and 10.

• You will be ready to sit the exam in this option subject at the end of year 10.

WHAT SUBJECTS ARE LIKELY TO APPEAR IN THE YEAR 10/11 OPTION BLOCK THAT STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE IN YEAR 9?

In January of year 9, you will be asked to select another subject to study in years 10 and 11 .

As a guide, the table below shows the range of options in year 9 that may be available.

PREFERENCE FOURTHE CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT PREFERENCES

• You will select three subjects that you will continue to study during year 9 only.

• You will be asked to indicate five preferences and will be allocated three of them

• If you are choosing to study a double language or a double humanity, the language or humanity enrichment must be one of the 5 preferences that you tick (this would be 2 of the 5 if you are choosing double humanity and double language in year 9)
