Do you live your life full of colour? What I mean is, when I say full of colour, I mean full of life or zest. Imagine a world in only black and white - with no colour at all. How dull and boring would it be?
How miserable and depressed would we be?Colour gives meaning. Colour gives emotion, affects our behavior, can calm or aggravate each and every
one of us.
We’re hitting March with a splash of colour this year to tie in with Human Rights Day on the 21st.
We celebrate Human Rights Day to commemorate the Sharpeville massacre in 1960 and to eliminate
racial discrimination. Lets continue to fi ght for freedom, justice, equality, peace, dignity and hope.
We hope everyone has stocked up on candles or solar energy jars as the power outages continue over the
next couple of months. Use this time to spend quality time enjoying your loved ones, enjoying our beautiful
peninsula or to simply look at the stars.
“When your life seems black & white, make sure that you dream in color”

Have you ever heard the old saying that only two things are certain in life, death and taxes? Well there is another certainty that can be
added to this; over the course of our lives we will all face challenges. Life is full of moments and phases that test our ability to stay strong. Some we are able to weather, and some can really knock the wind out of us; leaving us reeling and wondering how we will cope. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a manual available with instructions of how to cope with every eventuality; “In case of death of a loved one follow steps 2 through 5 on page 15...” I know that could do with one of these to keep in my kitchen drawer.
There may not be a manual on offer, but I do have a few tried and tested tips to pass on which may make handling certain life crises a little easier.
When helping clients navigate a diffi cult patch, it is often helpful if we work together to identify who they can turn to for support. Often a partner or close friend can be a very valuable asset. As was pointed out to me recently by my partner, “those who are closest to you can sometimes see the way through a problem that you are unable to, because we know you so well”. When distressed we know something is wrong, but sometimes we just can’t put our fi nger on it, those close to us can offer an objective point of view. If we are open to hearing them, this can be a powerful experience.
Those who follow my column each month, will know that I am a strong advocate for following a healthy lifestyle when battling with depression. Healthy nutrition, exercise, fresh air and just the right amount of sunshine can go a long way in helping to fi ght off the blues.
Another way of helping yourself to feel better is to deal with confl ict. Avoiding situations because we don’t know how to cope with any resulting confl ict will only lead to an incongruent lifestyle. If you can’t be honest about how you feel, you are not
The Billboard March 2015The Billboard March 2015 46The Billboard March 2015
being honest with yourself. Learn to express emotion appropriately and you will respect yourself more.
Often when faced with a diffi cult decision we fi nd ourselves becoming stressed and panicky, this can lead to us not doing anything; staying in a position which might not be the healthiest for us to avoid having to make a choice. A somewhat clichéd but valuable technique is to draw up a list of pros and cons around the situation, ask “what is the worst thing that could happen?” Do a costs and benefi ts exercise this will give a visual of the dilemma you are facing. When thoughts remain in your head, your mind can become a cluttered space; hindering your progress and your ability to make a decision. Most of us are aware of things that make us unhappy but often we don’t take action because it is easier to stay in our rut. Unfortunately all this does is deepen our sadness and prolong our pain. We may be stuck in a toxic relationship, or job because we are too scared to take a chance on something new, our fear holds us back from making changes that might lead to a signifi cant improvement. Utilise these tips and make the changes that you know you need to, but have been avoiding.
If faced with relationship, family or friendship issues, examining your personal boundaries can shed light on the issue. Ask yourself the following questions; what role do you play? Are you allowing someone to treat you badly; if so what message are you giving them that it’s ok to do so? By examining these issues, you may fi nd that your boundaries are too permeable. You are allowing someone to get too close for whatever reason and in doing so leaving yourself vulnerable. I am certainly not advocating that you keep everyone at a distance, only those who take advantage.
One key factor in feeling good about yourself is your level of self respect. How much do you like yourself? A self esteem exercise which I fi nd works well with clients is for them to keep a love diary. I ask them to write to
themselves as often as they can. In the love diary, they are only allowed to write positive things about themselves; what they like about themselves or good deeds they have done. It is normally slow going at fi rst, but as the “feel good vibes” start to fl ow, so does the script. Doing something nice for someone else is also a powerful exercise. Play Secret Santa, do something nice for someone without telling them it was you. This is a very effective tool in building self respect and esteem.
If there is anything that I will label as one of the most important things a person can work on it’s their level of self awareness around things that are trigger points for them. Often anniversaries of events can trigger feelings of sadness, anger and depression. If you are aware of this, take evasive action, surround yourself with your support structure, go out and be with people. Acknowledge the memory and be kind to yourself in the moment.
Sometimes events from our past can affect the way we live our lives. Holding on to toxic memories can poison our chances of living fulfi lled lives. If you can fi nd a way to make peace with your past the benefi ts are immense. Talking to someone who can give an objective point of view is valuable. Acknowledging where your pain comes from and then working on letting it go is a step towards healing. Some fi nd it helpful to write down the painful memories on a piece of paper and then burn it, another technique is to write your memories on a balloon and let it go up into the sky. People I have used these exercises with have reported immense relief and found the experience powerfully cathartic.
So no there is no manual, but there are many ways that you can help yourself to feel better, or to heal from a past trauma. If you feel unable to take on the task alone, please know that there is always help available, you just need to ask...

If you fancy truly authentic Indian cuisine then this is the place to go! Situated at 146 Main Road Fish Hoek and owner run by Gabbi Laity and managed by Chad Fritz, this eatery offers
you the option of a romantic evening for two, or a family friendly venue where food is shared and memories are made.
Under the expert guidance of Indian Chef John we selected the Meat Platter (for two - R110) and the Vegetable Platter (for two - R95) as starters. Both platters were a combination of all kinds of delicious items from tandoor, an authentic Indian clay oven, the different fl avours complimenting each other perfectly.
For our mains we selected a Lamb Korma (R105). This was a particular favourite of mine; a fragrant dish with meltingly tender lamb in a gravy full of fl avour. It is advised to select two or three different dishes so that you get an authentic Indian eating experience; with this in mind we opted for a Lamb Lahori, and a Bhunna Gosht, chunks of tender lamb served in a tomato and onion gravy with Indian spices, garlic and ginger. All are served with basmati rice and available in either mild, medium, hot or Indian hot.
To accompany our mains we ordered an extra side of caulifl ower rice (R30) which is good news for those following the Banting way of life. We also selected a Butter Naan bread (R25), which is highly recommended to mop up the different yummy gravies.
For dessert we were advised to try a Bhandari speciality dish; Chocolate and Almond Samoosas (R40). I know right? How does that work? Very well indeed! These were the perfect combination of crispy pastry, oozing with chocolate which has melted on the inside during the cooking process. Served with creamy vanilla ice-cream this was a delicious treat and the perfect way to end an evening fi lled with spices, aromas and all round feasting.
We found the staff friendly and well trained with a good knowledge of the dishes on offer. Our experience was enhanced by the ambient lighting and traditional decor, recently given a makeover by Nichole Fritz.
Bhandaris is open seven days aweek from 14:00 to 22:00.
The dishes are available for take away and the fully licensed restaurant
is available for functionsand group bookings.
