The Bigger Picture

Our programs naturally touch a child and their family in a simple, yet high-impact way that no medical treatments or procedures could possibly do. We offer relief and support in immediate, tangible ways through the love, support and friendship that evolves from the adoption process.

Our programs also have the ability to deeply impact student athletes, coaches and their fans within their communities. The interaction with their adoptee is often their first glimpse into a world that reminds them how fragile life can be and how strong one can be in the face of adversity.

The strength, courage and resilience the child demonstrates often motivates and inspires athletes and teams to levels they had not known, often exposing them to

‘giving back’ for the first time in their young adult life. Many athletes comment on how small their own troubles seem in comparison to what their adopted child faces. This helps put life’s issues in perspective as well as helping understand what is truly meaningful to them.

This ripple effect reaches far and wide as it spreads awareness about pediatric brain tumors and associates FoJ with the larger pediatric cancer world.

The many life-changing relationships and stories that have been born out of FoJ adoptions are now touching thousands globally. Countless videos and stories showcase the unique relationships that are developed in FoJ programs.

How you can help todayEngaging your business or organization with the FoJ mission will deeply resonate within athletic communities and their extensive fan base, displaying a natural extension of goodwill.

By helping more children and more teams to participate in FoJ, our supporters help form a nationwide generation of socially aware and supportive individuals and groups.

Our Mission

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for children and their families who are battling pediatric brain tumors and to raise awareness about this insidious disease.

How do we do this? FoJ pairs up children and their families battling pediatric brain tumors with college and high school sports teams. The teams give these children love, support and friendship as they fight this devastating disease. We celebrate each day by creating lasting relationships between student athletes, the child, and their families. This greatly improves the quality of life for children with brain tumors, as well as those who support them.

VisionThe Friends of Jaclyn Foundation has a global vision to provide every child suffering from a brain tumor, and in the future, other life-threatening diseases, the opportunity to receive love and support as they struggle through their everyday challenges.

FoJ seeks to immediately impact the child’s life in valuable and constructive ways that will alter their outlook about their situation, whereby giving them hope and courage to fight this insidious disease. By providing these children and their families with teams of dedicated student athletes and coaches who give the children love, support and friendship, improving their quality of life. In turn, the athletes gain a different perspective about life and compassion - the gift of caring for others.

Jaclyn’s Story

The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FoJ) is a magical story about a 9-year-old girl, a start-up Division I women’s lacrosse team, and a big dream.

In 2004, 9-year-old Jaclyn Murphy was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor.

In 2005, through chance of events, Jaclyn became connected to and later adopted as an honorary member of the Northwestern Women’s lacrosse team. Jaclyn’s strength, courage, relentless spirit and joy for life inspired the players.

The team began to play for Jaclyn and achieved a magical “perfect season”, winning Northwestern’s first NCAA national championship in 64 years. Just three years after the program started, Jaclyn even predicted the final score, 13-10, in the championship final. Jaclyn inspired the team to go on to win 7 consecutive Division I NCAA national titles.

Soon after Jaclyn shared a big dream with her father - she wanted other children with pediatric brain tumors to have the similar experiences of

being an honorary team member. The Murphys understood that it is ultimately the love, support and friendship of others that give people the inspiration and courage to get through this challenging journey.

The Dream became a reality and a new foundation was born.

In 2005, The Murphy Family started The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FoJ) to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors and their families by pairing them with college and high school athletic teams.

“When Nicholas spends time with the players it’s a special and rare time for him to leave his cancer at the door and just have fun.” - Karen Trivelpiece, mother to Nick, Adopted by Syracuse University Men’s Basketball 2009

“My daughter Katie, now eleven, was adopted by the Ohio State University Women’s Lacrosse team in 2011. They are well into their season, and Katie continues to enjoy joining them on the sidelines at most of their home games. Because of the adoption, Katie herself has become interested in, and is playing Lacrosse herself. Her health continues to be great. We are very blessed.”

- Sara, Mom to Katie

“It is difficult to describe all the amazing support we receive from our FoJ team and this brings incomparable joy to our family. The girls and coaches offer their love and enthusiasm to our daughter who benefits from the mentoring of these treasured relationships in our lives.”

- Karen Clark, mom to Kay, honorary member of the University of Central Florida Softball Team

“FoJ made my brain cancer a positive thing. I would have never had a team or all these friends.” medulloblastoma. 8 13 04 - Joe Feminella, age 12, Adopted onto Stony Brook University Football Team 2009

“FoJ is a support system for our son. He may not be able to play football but he is sure part of a team. He loves the sport and the guys.”- Ann Feminella, Mom to Joe, Adopted onto Stony Brook University Football Team

“ The inspiration of watching a child, fighting for their life, light up when the student-athletes shower them with attention and make them a part of our TEAM is a bonding experience that cannot be rivaled by anything I have seen. The mutual expressions of love and brotherhood have worked wonders in both directions.”

- Mike Waddell, Senior Associate Athletic Director, University of Arkansas

“Having Alex as a teammate over the last four years has been one of the most positive experiences of my college career. Getting to see him grow up and help him and his family in their battle has been an absolute privilege. He’s a very special boy and I am very excited that Harvard Baseball will continue to get to be a part of his life.”

r “As a former collegiate field hockey player and former college coach, turned career business woman, I will say that FoJ from all fronts reminds students, coaches and parents the importance of how to live in the moment and play in the moment. Jaclyn’s story has inspired our Charity by Design division at Alex and Ani and now we are able to inspire our fans through “The Elephant” bangle design. When I wear my bangle I think of Jaclyn’s story and how encouraging it is that difficult times can be used to help others. Jaclyn and her family are a true testament of what is real in a world that thrives for community change.”

Our Programs

FoJ’s three programs are designed to help families cope with the many challenges they face as they fight pediatric brain tumors on a daily basis. Each of our programs help the individual and the family as well as bringing awareness to this devastating disease.

1. Adopt-A-Child: Pairs a child with a pediatric brain tumor with a sports team. The team provides a unique support system that gives the child a distraction and something to look forward to as they are often feeling sick, isolated and unsure of themselves. In addition to the physical benefits, the child receives social and emotional support.

2. Safe on the Sidelines (SOS): This program pairs sibling(s) of the afflicted child with a team of his or her own. The brother or sister of a child with cancer often feels scared and alone, and can also benefit from a team of their own.

3. Guardian Angel: Designed to help the child and family along their cancer journey including those who are entering hospice. The child and family receive emails and posts of love and support from hundreds of individuals within the FoJ network. Supporters offer caring messages of compassion, support and kindness for families going through their darkest moments.
