THE BIG SIR COLUMN

Remember It’s May 18

Our meeting date for May has been moved to May 18. Don't show up on the usual date or you will see a bunch of strangers and probably

have a lousy time.

I thought we had a good meeting and an excellent speaker at our April meeting. Thomas Lindemuth clearly explained the technology and presented the case for desalinization. Congratulations to Little Sir Darryl and his team. As you can read in the adjoining column, we will be having another excellent speaker in May. I don't think you'll want to miss him.

May will also be a great time to bring a first time guest. Not only will the guest's meal be $10 less at $15, you as the sponsor will receive a credit of $10 to be used for the purchase of Sir apparel. That's a great deal, and it's our opportunity to build a backlog of applicants for July as we don't have our usual luncheon in June.

And speaking of June, have you made reservations for you and your sweetie for our Spring Ladies' Day Lunch. Jack and his crew promise us an outstanding meal and some fine entertainment. Come early and enjoy refreshments on the patio overlooking the valley. Later in the month we'll have our annual Branch 8 BBQ; that's another fun event that involves the ladies. THE LITTLE SIR SEZ

I received a number of compliments on our speaker’s presentation at our April luncheon. Our presenter, Thomas Lindemuth, gave us some very interesting facts

about the different types of desalination processes that are available and the feasibilities of each. Tom was gracious enough to stay after the luncheon and answer questions from about 12 members. I know there is a cost factor to consider but with blended desalinated water the cost wasn’t that great. Saudi Arabia relies solely on desalinated water so why not the Bay Area? Who knows, it may on the way.

Now, our speaker for May. Fred Nelson, one of our speaker committee members, has lined up Tom Barnidge, an editorial writer and columnist for the Contra Costa Times. Before Tom joined the Contra Costa Times he worked 12 years for the NFL editing all Super Bowl programs, retail NFL books and magazines plus all NFL team publications. Tom is presently the Metro Columnist for the Times. This certainly looks to be another great presenter for our luncheon.

Look forward to seeing all of you at the May luncheon.

Big SIR continued…

Last month I wrote about our Branch's first ever Mission Statement. Paraphrasing it, we want to enrich our members' lives and consequently, the lives of their spouses/partners. One of the key (and obvious) way we do that is through our activities. There is no branch in Sirdom that has as many and varied activities as we do – currently 45 with 27 of them coed.

I ask each one of you to read through this Hotline issue and not simply concentrate on the activities in which you're involved. There may well be activities that you are not aware of and you may want to get involved with them. If you don't see an activity that hits one of your passions, consider starting it. Our newly formed activities team can help you get it off the ground, and by doing this you can make our branch even more enjoyable to our members.

That's about it for this month. Remember, bring a first time guest and not only does he eat for $15, you get $10 off a piece of Sir apparel.

Aloha! (guess who’s in Hawaii?)

Ed Benson, Branch 8 Big Sir

NEW ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER OR E-MAIL If you change any of the above, please notify Bob Barnes. If you need a new member’s email address (or phone number), you can also contact Bob Barnes at (925) 686-0106 or send him an email.

Bob Barnes 686-0106 [email protected] Dave Perkins 256-9569 [email protected]

E-MAIL FOR ABSENCES AND GUESTS Emails sent to [email protected] for excused absences will be confirmed with a ‘Reply’ it was received. Messages sent to personal email accounts will not be answered.

If a ‘Reply’ confirming receipt of the email is not received, it is the member’s responsibility to follow up and ensure it was sent to the correct address. Either resend the email or call the attendance number at 925-901-4826 by Thursday noon prior to the meeting.

Please note calls to the telephone number will not be automatically returned since the greeting message confirms the correct number was reached.

Please bring a guest, but if you want to be sure your guest has a place to sit and gets a meal, you need to do the following:

Call the Attendance Secretary, Bill Peterson, on the attendance hotline: 925-901-4826 or by e-mail [email protected] on Thursday before the meeting. Then Bill can adjust his count for the caterer.

MEMBER RELATIONS COMMITTEE

Remember to carry several of our branch “business” cards in your wallet to give out to possible candidates for membership in our branch. Fill them out with your name and phone number as well. We will continue to award a random free lunch ticket on a quarterly basis to someone who is carrying a properly filled out card.

Also, remember to give a couple cards to your wife or significant other to carry. She can give these to friends and acquaintances who may know someone who qualifies for membership. Just a heads-up, for our upcoming Ladies Day Luncheon, your significant other may win something, if she has such a card with her.

We continue to do a good job bringing in new guests and members. Our number of guests and new members are ahead of our goal for this year. By bringing in new guests, we keep our branch vibrant and active. Good job everyone!

Johnson, Chairman of the Member Relations Committee

COMMENT CARD CORNER At the April 13, 2015 luncheon 9 attendees submitted comment cards. Six cards were submitted by members, one by a guest, and 2 showed no identity. Three attendees were "Impressed", one was “Pleasantly Surprised”, one was “Satisfied”, and 4 gave no attitude.

Six of the cards praised the food and service with such accolades as above average, enjoyable, good, good homemade tasting meatloaf, and great veggies. One congratulated the kitchen. The bread plates were missed again for the second straight month. Two noted the room was crowded, as were the tables with 9 diners each.

Two said the speaker was good or excellent, but one thought the presentation became too technical and produced nodding heads and relaxed eyes. Another thought speakers should have a 20 minute limit. Brief announcements were pleasing to one.

For the second straight month the feedback or hum from the sound system was annoying.

The most interesting comment was dislike for the method of introducing new members. He likes to hear directly from the inductee, as they are more entertaining and humorous that way.

SinSIRly, Jim Sowell

RECRUITMENT

The new year started off great. The recruitment committee is looking for new ways to introduce SIR to the community. The best recruitment method is still the members of the branch. Get together with your friend and neighbors and let them know how much fun you are having and ask them to join you at a luncheon meeting. Don' forget to stop by the recruitment table and pick up brochures and wallet cards to aid you in your discussions.

FREE LUNCH DRAWING FOR BRINGING GUESTS As an incentive to bring in new candidates for membership, a drawing for a free lunch will be held in January and in July for members who bring guests to meetings during the previous six months. You can use the SIR cards available at the check-in table to invite guests.

For each new guest sponsored during the six month period, a member will have an entry in the drawing. Bring one new

We, your Editors and Webmasters, are here to serve you, and we need your very important input. For the Website, send input anytime, but expect some possible delay before input is added.

ACTIVITY REPORT Co-Ed activities are an important part of Branch 8. We currently have 28, probably the most of any SIR branch in the state. We want to promote our Co-Ed activities to current members as well as to prospective applicants by including Co-Ed information in the Hotline and on individual activity web site entries.

We are also sending a quarterly Co-Ed Newsletter to the homes of all our members. You should have recently received Issue #2 and will get Issue #3 in mid-summer. The Activity Coordinating Committee would like to know how it is being received by our members, so we will be asking for feedback over the next few months in several formats.

The first will be a brief 5-6 question web-based survey of Branch 8 members that will take a few minutes to complete. You will receive an email early in May with a link to the survey. Your participation in the survey will be much appreciated. Once we get done with gathering the feedback, we’ll let you know the results.

As always, thanks for your help. Phil

Annual Branch 8 BBQ Time Is Running Out

At the time this is being written, we have reached our 130 participant goal, but if you want to attend, don't despair. We are now taking sign ups for alternates. There are sure to be drop outs between now and our June 16 event.

If you want to attend, send an email to Ed Benson ([email protected]), and he will put you on the alternate list. Participants will be taken of the alternate list on a first in, first out basis as those who have already signed up drop out. If you want to attend, DON'T delay.

Those who are among the lucky (or prompt) 130 will receive an email in early/mid May giving you the payment details.

The BBQ will be held on June 16 at the Concord Community Park on Cowell Road just south of Monument Boulevard. We will again be using last year’s caterer, headed by our own Branch 8 member, Tom Borman; they did a great job. The price remains the same at $25.00 per person.

The festivities will start at 3:00, dinner will be served around 5:00 and we’ll wrap up at dusk or whenever the drinks run out. LOL

ARTS, CRAFTS & HOBBIES

The Arts, Crafts, Hobbies and Collections Activity got off to a start at the April Meeting. It featured hand made boxes using dovetail construction, marquetry and some inlays. We hope to make this an ongoing activity and will try to have an exhibit showcasing the various interests of our membership for everyone to enjoy, so please stop by our table and check it out.

The next exhibit will be in July and will continue on a quarterly basis for now, but it can be expanded as necessary. We are actively pursuing participants, so if you have an interest of any kind, and I mean ANY KIND, please contact me.

ASTRONOMY

Dr. Rollie Otto, our guest speaker, discussed the connection between science and faith at our regular meeting Monday, April 13. We are taking a tour of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on Friday April 17.

The topic for May 18 will be Einstein's Theory of General Relativity and we will watch a video on the subject. We will also

discuss our upcoming visit to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Our Web page at www.sirbr8.com/astronomy is updated frequently with new information, videos and links relating to upcoming topics.

BOOK EXCHANGE

If you read it and like it, bring it.We encourage and want you to bring books to share. Our mantra is…”IF YOU READ A BOOK THAT YOU REALLY LIKED AND WANT TO SHARE IT, BRING IT TO THE NEXT SIR LUNCHEON AND DONATE TO OUR COLLECTION”. Unfortunately we have started to get books that appear to be

from someone's housecleaning: old textbooks, travel guides from 2000 (or earlier!!), etc. Although we immediately weed these from our collection, it would be better if our members did not bring them to the meeting.

We have marked some of the boxes with red tape indicating “NEW BOOKS” which we place at the end of the table. Just drop any new books, or books from the collection you are returning, into these marked boxes. This way everyone knows what is NEW.

Since we continue to grow at about 3 boxes of new books each meeting, the book exchange team meets every 6 months to review our inventory and continue to “weed” as necessary, to keep our collection at 40-50 boxes of books.

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions contact any member of the book exchange team:

BOOK GROUP

We read Sandy Tolan's 'Lemon Tree' in April and it triggered the best discussion so far. We soon left the books' contents and looked toward the present and future of life in Israel and Palestine, what it held and how to improve it. There were objective and biased opinions, lots of

enthusiasm and lots of thought. One repeated comment was “what a sad book” that reflected the history and hope for Israel.

Now, during April, we are reading Ken Follet's 'Eye of a Needle'. More on that next month!

The Book Group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. at Round Table Pizza on Treat blvd. Email me, Nick Maufe if you are interested in joining us.

advice on mistakes at any time.

The sessions are co-ed. Basic Bridge is held on the first Thursday of the month from 1:30 – 3:30 PM at Round Table Pizza located on Treat Blvd. near Oak Grove Road. Come early for lunch as that is our payment for use of the room. Call Rod Spicer, 935-5306, to be added to our reminder list.

COUPLES BRIDGE © The April 20th Couples Bridge session had 6 tables or 12 couples, resulting in some competitive games. This was our biggest turnout. So, we tried a new procedure in which we utilized 2 booths in the restaurant area to provide more “elbow” room for all 6 tables. It seemed to work fine.

Raleigh and Helen Davis took first place with 3350 points. Second and third place were taken by the team of Lee Schneider and Adrienne Morrison with 2940 points and Rod and MaryAnn Spicer with 2870 points.

Our next game will be Monday May 11th (the second Monday this month only because of the change in our Sir Luncheon date to the third Monday). Mark you calendars! If anyone is interested in joining us, please contact Ken Main by phone or email. We are always in need of substitutes.

We meet at Round Table Pizza on Treat Blvd (near Oak Grove) in Walnut Creek, with play starting at 1:00 PM. Join us for lunch before bridge play begins.

BRIDGE DUPLICATE – ONE Duplicate Bridge #1 met April 10th for the regular monthly session at Chateau II in Pleasant Hill. Top finishers were:

1st Kahl-Schulzer 38.5 points

2ndT Sherne-Schick 36 points

2ndT Gopal-Milano 36 points

Only one slam was bid and made by the Pappenhagen-Regan team who bid and made 6 NT on a board where all other pairs bid 4 spades making 6. Otherwise very few games were bid and made. Play, for the most part, could be characterized as epic defensive struggles. Top play on the defensive side went to the Gopal-Milano pair who set an ill-advised 5 heart save attempt by 3 doubled, not vulnerable for a score of 500.

Thanks to Ed Myrtle for hosting and set-up. Jim Regan will have these duties in for our May 8 session. Players are reminded not to use the parking close to Chateau II - that is needed for the residents and their guests. Lastly, thanks to Al Pappenhagen and Dean Steichen for subbing.

We had a little bit of trouble getting started this month. We expected 5 tables of players, but only 4 showed up. If you have signed up with Al Welch saying you were coming, it would be courteous if you could call us to

cancel for any reason. I have added my cell phone (324-8336), so you can reach me at the last minute.

This month the best players were: Rod Spicer (4550); Al Welch (3840); Larry Lange (3560); and Al Hudgens (3380). The scores ran from 600 to 4550 with the median being about 2500.

All members are invited to our game. We play on the first Thursday of the month at Round Table Pizza on Treat Blvd. near Oak Grove Road. The game starts at 9:00AM and we want everyone to arrive by 8:45. Please answer Al Welch’s e-mail early because the last man to answer may be eliminated if the tables are full.

AREA 2 FISHING

All SIR members and guests are welcome and, indeed, encouraged to participate in fishing trips as well as attend the monthly meetings. Next meeting will be Thursday,

May 28th, at the Legend Sports Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course at 4050

Port Chicago Highway in Concord. Meeting starts at 8:30am.

It is all about trout! San Pablo Reservoir is the place. Dick Grube caught 2 of the tasty rainbows over 10 pounds and a 5 pound black bass, all trolling. Terry Miller, Gordon Linebaugh, Barry Rauchle, Rich Fiscina, Paul Dubow, Ernie Wong, Harry Sherinian, and Carl Moyer all caught some of the delicious San Pablo trout. Pete Gates, Steve Loftin, Bruce Persons, and Ken Konzak all got limits of trout from Los Vaqueros Reservoir in rental boats. Carl Moyer got skunked at Shadow Cliffs from the shore, and also on the opening day of salmon season on the ocean fishing from Moss Landing.

Catching small stripers and a few keepers from the delta were Rich Fiscina, Terry Miller, Harry Sherinian, Tom Boltz, Mike Corker, and Tom Kostik. Harry Sherinian and Carl Moyer got one small shaker halibut from the Berkeley Flats in San Pablo Bay. Paul Dubow went to Florida for some sheepshead and mangrove snappers. And Ernie Wong fly fished from his ladder at Pyramid Lake in Nevada for the large cutthroat trout found there. The ocean rockfish season starts early this year, April 15th. Go get em!!!

We will be very busy this spring with: delta fishing for bass, catfish, striped bass, and sturgeon; trout in mountain and local lakes, salmon and rockfish on the ocean. We live in a fishermen’s paradise.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, May 28th at the Legend Sports Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course at 4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord. Meeting starts at 8:30 am. For further information, please contact: Dick Thomson, Big Fish (925-944-1760) Carl Moyer, Branch 8 Coordinator, (925-685-5243) or Romano Gnusti, Treasurer/Secretary, (925-376-3313.)

GENEALOGY

The SIR Genealogy Activity is a new activity for the purpose of assisting members wanting to research their family's genealogy. Since this activity can be pursued on-line at home when the member chooses, there is not a strong need to hold frequent meetings.

We are well aware there is a strong interest in genealogy. Your thoughts and ideas towards improving this activity will be appreciated. Anyone wanting advice or guidance in the research of genealogy, please contact:

GOLF 18 HOLES How well did you know your game? Our first Branch 8 Tournament was held on April 20 and no doubt a good time was had by all, 12 inch holes on the front 9 and “plays it down” on the back 9.

May and June are full golf-wise with our Area 2 Team Scramble being held at Deer Ridge on May 28. We will be well represented with 9 teams participating. Lets bring home a winner and advance to the next qualifier. Our “Event of the Year” Carmel will be held June 1 and 2. It is not too late to sign up for this one. Monday, June 1 we will play Rancho Canada East (48 signed up) and Pacific Grove June 2 (36 signed up) Monday night is our dinner with 55 attending. This historically has been a real fun event. Have you ever wondered what your swing speed may be? Well. Here is a bit of trivia. The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62 mph:96 mph for an average LPGA professional: 84 mph for an average male golfer: 108 mph for an average PGA Tour player: 130 mph for Tiger Woods: 148-152 for a national long drive champion. Balls travel significantly further on hot days. A golfer swinging a club at around 100 mph (doesn’t apply to most of us Branch 8 golfers) will carry the driver up to eight yards longer for each increase in air temperature of 25 degrees Fahrenheit. We all try our best when playing golf. When the pros break 60 it is a milestone. Well, a few Branch 8 golfers have achieved that “goal”. Here they are: Dwane McGlothin and Ken Belfer both shot 59’s at Dublin Ranch on Jan 13. David Green carded a 57 and on Feb 2 at Brentwood. Ken Belfer again shot a 57 on March 2 at Delta View. It may be noted that these scores are net, rather than the pros gross score. Nevertheless, these guys are good! Dave Platter, Chair: [email protected] 283 9146 Bill Koski, Communications: [email protected] 672 7650 GOLF 9 HOLES

We continue to have a great turn out every week and a good time afterwards in the restaurant. After careful consideration and feedback from the players it has been decided to continue with the “free drop from the bunker no closer to the hole” rule for the

time being or until adequate sand is put into the traps. Of course if you prefer to play from the hazard please feel free to do so. The plans for the Don Atwater Invitational on June 4th are rapidly being formulated see the page on the website for more information. If you are planning on participating please contact the event chairman Phil Philpot at [email protected] or 937-2260.

COUPLES GOLF©

Marshals Joe and Bonnie Dell’Orfano hosted our April 9th event at Diablo Creek Golf Course with a very creative and fun play format: “Bingo, Bango, Bongo”. The person in each foursome to be the

1st on the green would get a “Bingo” (worth 1 point). The person closest to the pin would get a “Bongo” (1 point) and the first in the cup got a “Bongo” (also 1 point). So, in theory, the maximum # of points a person could get would be 3 points a hole or 27 points for the round. We had a tie for 1st place, Dean Steichen and Larry Yarberry both got 10 points and won a sleeve of golf balls. Once again, we had a near record turnout with 22 golfers, 2 golfers were on the DA list, and couldn’t play but did join us for another scrumptious lunch and the Greenery Restaurant.

Our next game will be on May 14 at Diablo Creek and our marshals will be Millie and Paul Hersch.

The last "Dine in two" took place at the lavish home of Bill and Pat Eich Thursday, April 3rd. It was a sumptuous affair with and assortment of appetizers and with libation on the deck.

There were 10 participants present with the Riley's filling in for the Lackwara's who were off to new adventures.

The meal was absolutely perfect, with a herbed chicken and scalloped creamed potatoes along with a great salad, veggies and bread and butter and lotsa vino.

To cap the evening off, the dessert was a Lemon cream pie that was a work of art and the taste was divine.

A number of toasts were given and a merry evening was had by all.

SIRS IN THE GARDEN ©

A great late Spring, and a wonderful Summer, is approaching. Tips from Contra Costa Master Gardeners: WATER ACCORDING TO PLANT NEEDS AND SOIL TYPE! Check soil moisture (dig down or use a moisture meter) and water only when the soil is dry. Adjust irrigation frequency and run

times to water plants as little as possible to keep them alive. Get used to plants that don’t look perfect. The following link provides sample sprinkler and drip run times. After factoring in your climate, soil, plant type and sprinkler output, these can be used as a starting point. Gradually reduce water use by 10 percent increments over the course of a few weeks, giving plants time to adjust. http://ccmg.ucanr.edu/

WELCOME to the following new members of SIRs in the Garden group! SIRS IN THE KITCHEN Cinco de Mayo

With Executive Chef Ed and Ms Donna on their way to Hawaii, what better way to celebrate an April spring day than to bring Hawaii to Walnut Creek? The weather was beautiful, the Sirs in the Kitchen gang for the

most part were dressed in their best Hawaiian shirts and a complete Hawaiian meal including Mai Tais and Hawaiian Beer was prepared and served. The menu featured two Hawaiian hors d'oeuvres, ribs, beans mac salad, coleslaw, bread and dessert. Lots of pineapple and dark brown sugar died for this meal.

It couldn't have been done without the help of prep sous chefs Jack and Dick and finish sous chefs Rons (Smith and Maciak, Ekk and Tom. Of course a big pat on the back goes to our set up, clean up and take down crews. All did a fine job. It takes a bunch of volunteers to put this meal on every month. Oh yeah, Ron Smith won a free lunch by wearing a shirt that best typified the Islands (at least in Ms Donna's opinion).

At our next meeting on May 19, we will celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Well, we'll be two weeks late, but who cares? The menu will feature at least four Mexican appetizer favorites, plus chicken enchiladas, carnitas, frijoles, taco salad and mini margarita cheese bites. I can hardly wait – gee, to be in Hawaii and Mexico in the same month.

Sirs in the Kitchen is now at 50 members. If you want to join, drop Executive Chef Ed an email ([email protected]), call

him (925-943-7011) or catch him at the monthly meeting. So far, we’ve always had room for anyone who was able to attend, and our typical luncheon turns out 25 to 30, or so. You don’t have to be an experienced cook (our members have all levels of cooking ability), and all meetings are held at Casa Benson. The usual shared cost for the luncheon and wine is $15, and that’s the best deal in town.

Should any Sirs want our recipes, email Executive Chef Ed, and they’ll be sent to you.

Our guest speakers will be Jim and Sue Breedlove, of Breedlove Insurance in Orinda. Sue and Jim will discuss

“Insurance For Seniors: Medicare and More”. They will explore the types of Medicare coverage, the rules for when you can get and change your coverage, and why you might want to. The goal is to minimize your medical insurance costs. If there’s time, they also explore why a senior might want to have life insurance as well.

Jim was born and raised in Tyler, Texas and worked his way West over the years. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics from MIT and a PhD from Rice. He also has an MBA from the University of New Mexico. Jim held numerous technical positions before forming Breedlove Insurance. He specializes in Medicare and life insurance.

TABLE POOL Did you ever play pool in your younger years? Have you ever thought about playing again but didn't want to go to the pool hall by yourself? Just like Golf you only become good at putting the ball in the pocket if you practice. It improves eye and

hand coordination. It might even improve your game of Golf.

Because you're a SIR member you have the opportunity to get together to play some pool (just for the fun of it). We play for approximately 2 hours. We meet and start at 11:30 on the first and third Mondays of each month at Masses, 2721 North

Main Street, Walnut Creek. The cost is $5.00 for as long as you want to play. This is a special rate that Masses gives the SIR’s members. You can also play during the day, at other times, for the same $5.00 fee. Just tell them you're a member of SIRs. We play mostly 2 man teams of eight ball, or a unique three-player game, called “Crazy Eights”, depending on the number of participants.

There are plenty of tables, so come on down and join other pool players from Branch 8 and other branches in the area. If you have not played for awhile, don't be bashful. Come on down and join us and get some practice. We welcome new pool playing and potential pool playing members.

WINE FINDERS 1 ©

Sir Ron and Judy Smith graciously opened their home to our thirsty (& hungry) members, setting the perfect tone for our wine tasting event. All couples offered their selection of California Rose’s, which not surprisingly originated almost entirely in Northern California! Appetizers were

unique and abundant; none of the attendees were threatened with starvation!!

Our participation was nearly 100%, just missing Sir Jack Sagen and Rose. Six bottles were entered in the competition/evaluation tasting, and the top three were:

1ST PLACE: Tony (& Peggy) de Losada’s 2013 “Menage a Trois” California Rose’, Safeway, $5.40.

2nd PLACE: Tom (& Shiela) Mohrman’s 2013 Coppola Sofia Rose’, Monterey County, Bevmo, $13.99.

3rd PLACE: Jim (& Christine) Ripley’s 2013 Ryder Estate, Pinot Noir Rose’, Central Coast, Bevmo. $6.99.

Of note was Tony and Peggy’s blue ribbon winner coming in at only $5.40 per bottle—such A DEAL !!!

The evening was SPARKED with enthusiasm- including some putting exhibitions by some of our golfers,. A special thank you to Ron and Judy! Next gathering will be June 11, hosted by the Laabacks; August by the Sagens; and the Mohrmans have Oct. December may be a holiday gathering of all 3 WINEFINDERS GROUPS!! (PRICES)???

INVITATION TO ALL SIR MEMBERS: Although this is a group that encourages couples participation, single SIR members are invited to come stag or pair-up with a SIR whose spouse is unable to attend. A wine type is selected (by Chair

or HOSTS), then we do a blind tasting, and rank the top 3 bottles. Each couple brings a bottle of their favorite wine in accord with the selected type, priced under $16. Bonus points are obtained for bottles under $10, and double bonus points for under $6 !!

Each couple also brings an appetizer suitable for serving 8 that compliments their wine selection. We meet at 6 PM at rotating host’s homes on the second Thursday of even numbered months (Feb., Apr., etc). Remember to bring your own glass, one per attendee, properly “branded”.

If any of you SIRs are interested in joining our group, please consider getting on our waiting list as there’s usually room for those wishing to attend. Also note that 2 other groups exist that operate pretty much the same way. (WINEFNDERS-2, WINEFINDERS - 3).

WINE FINDERS 2 © This is an informal wine tasting occurring every even numbered month. Although this is a group that encourages couples participation, single SIR are invited and can come stag or pair-up with a SIR whose spouse is unable to attend. A type of wine is selected by each Wine Finder sub-group, then we do a blind tasting and rank all wines. Each couple brings a bottle of their wine priced under $15. Each couple brings an appetizer to serve 6 or 8 that compliments the wine selection. We meet at 6:PM at rotating host's homes, usually on the second Thursday of even numbered months. Each attendee also brings his/her own glass.

If any SIRs are interested in joining our group(s), please contact either of the co-chairmen, or Bob Price (925) 937-6814

CELLAR FILLERS WINE

The next meeting will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, May 13, at Sir Jim Warner's home, 290 Twinview Dr., Pleasant Hill. Directions have been furnished to members. If you would like your name added to the members list and receive directions, please call or email either Jim

Sowell or Jim Warner with your contact info.

Attendance is limited to about 14 members, applicants or guests. CFWA is a great activity to introduce a guest to SIR. The activity is open to members, applicants, and prospective member guests. Spouses and SO's are welcome at our other 4 wine activities, such as Wine Finders I, II, and III, or Bargain Wines. Volunteer hosts are welcome.

We have a modest lunch and taste approximately 10 selected wines. A report on the wines evaluated at our May meeting will be available on the Branch 8 website home page soon after the CFWA meeting. It will list the wines, their rankings, price and source. This information will allow Sirs unable to participate in the actual tasting to buy wines that meet their criteria for value and quality. The cost of the activity varies with the number of attendees, but usually runs around $10.00.

Early reservations are accepted any time. If you have questions contact:

Jim Sowell, Chair, [email protected], (925) 939-4670 or (925) 457-7746 cel Jim Warner, Ass't Chair, [email protected], (925) 935-8032

BARGAIN WINES

Tasting on the Straits Thirty-four bargain winos enjoyed a 10 bottle tasting at Zio Fraedo’s Restaurant in Pleasant Hill on March 31. Of the 10 wines (4 white and 6 reds), 2 of the whites and 3

of the reds were judged to be candidates for either immediate or eventual purchase. That's a pretty good hit rate for wines that sell for $10 or less. Should anyone want the summary judging, please email Ed Benson.

The appetizers of fried zucchini and fried calamari were quickly devoured, and all of us were very satisfied our selected entrees (mostly steak). We'll go back there in the future as we had a nice private room, no corkage charge and were allowed to finish wine not drunk in the tasting with our dinner. A great deal for $45 per person.

The next outing will be sometime in late May or early June. Ed and Jim will set the date when Ed and Ms. Donna return from Hawaii in early May. We are looking at doing a wine tasting on a yacht leaving from Martinez. We would taste while motoring around the Carquinez Straits then have dinner – probably at La Tappitia in Martinez. Total cost for the 2 hour cruise, tasting and dinner would be around $50 per person. Watch for the announcement in early/mid May.

We now have 58 Branch 8 Sirs on our roster, and although this is a couples’ activity, single Sirs (or those single for the evening) are certainly welcome. Meetings are scheduled on an ad hoc basis – usually in conjunction with major sales from wine outlets. We usually taste ten wines priced from $10 and below. We aim for 4 or 5 meetings a year. The Head Wino is Ed Benson ([email protected]), and he’s ably assisted by Jim Warner ([email protected]). Please contact either of them to be included in the participant email list. Now, let’s go find those bargains!

WRITING YOUR LIFE STORY

Writing Your Life Stories will meet on April 28 and we welcome new members. We write short stories about events in our lives that are of interest to us and perhaps will be to our progeny. Meeting as a group and sharing stories (always voluntary) triggers our memories and keeps us inspired.

We meet on the fourth Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Vintage Kensington Place (in the second floor Game Room), located on Geary Road near North Main in Walnut Creek, just off I-680.

You will receive a syllabus to guide you in writing your own life stories. .
