When the two Super Bowlteams were first decided, myfirst two thoughts were…1)Go 49ers!2) I hate the @#*! Ravens—and Ray Lewis!!My third thought, though, was a little more interesting—albeit one of this game’s biggeststory lines; theHarbaughbrothers, Jim and John, whowill be coaching San Franciscoand Baltimore, respectively.John, 50, is older by 15months—or in other words,Jack and Jackie were REALbusy from late 1961 to early1963.They will also be REALbusy on game day, Sunday, both likely running betweenfan sections andmaking it look

like they want neither or bothteams to win. This will be about as easy asCourtney Love being sober—but, then again, neither will the2013 (insert favorite holidayhere) in theHarbaugh house-hold.Like typical competitivebrothers, it might go some-thing like this…Jim:Did too!John:Did not!Jim:Did too!John:Did not!Jim:Mom!!Anyway, you get the picturewhen it comes to sibling rival-ries. I know the feeling all toowell myself, because I have atwin brother and an older oneof close age.We all grew up

playing baseball togetherthrough high school, plus mytwin and I played prep footballon the same team for threeyears.Althoughmy seemingly an-cient memory of those daystells me we got along prettygood, I’m sure reality may havebeen a little different—or atleast at moments when Rob orMike hit a homerun and I did-n’t.Or when Rob threw for atouchdown on the openingdrive and I got stuffed onmyfirst run from scrimmage like ablue fin tuna inMassachusetts.I’m sure that’s how Sunday isgoing to be for theHarbaughbros—leavingMom andDadnothing but worries on how to

praise the winner properly, while TRYING to console theloser properly—if that’s evenpossible!?Anyway, with Jim being borntwo days before ChristmasDay1963 (John’s B-day is Sept. 23,1962), I’m hoping that his folksget to look at his ring duringhis 40th birth-anniversary.John, though, has a fewthings going for him, too, like…1.) September 23, 1962:ABC's first color TV series-The Jetsons;2) September 23, 1962: TheJetsons aired for the first time;and3) September 23, 1962: Lin-coln Center for the PerformingArts inNewYork City opens

with the first building complet-ed, PhilharmonicHall (nowAvery FisherHall) home of theNewYork PhilharmonicSo, as you can see, this wholebrother thing is getting quitecomplicated, so “Go 49ers!”“Booo Ray Lewis!”Now that that’s done, let meleave you with one of my fa-vorite quotes of all time (and ifsomeone knows the author, please e-mail it to me [email protected]), although I have adjusted ita bit for this special occasion…“Let those that love the 9ers,love the 9ers; and for those thatdon’t, may they twist their an-kle, so that wemay know themby their limp!”

The game of football to agirl can—in some but notall cases—seem as foreignto a woman as mascara is toa guy.Because of this, we at theNogales Internationalwould like to extend this“crash course” or “Footballfor Dummies” for thosethat currently find them-selves behind the powercurve for this coming Sun-day’s Big Game:

LESSON 1Simply stated … Two“teams” (in Sunday’s case, the San Francisco 49ersand the Baltimore Ravens)of 11 men each try to“march” (or move) downthe 100-yard field and keeppossession of the “ball” or“pigskin” (or the littlebrown thing all those bruitsare all holding) and “score”or put the aforementioned

ball into the end zone(s), orthe two 10-yards deep x160-feet wide boxes onboth ends of the field.A lot of lines need to befilled in here, so let’s got to…

LESSON 2The team on offense(with the ball) has fourplays to advance 10 yards inorder to start over for an-other four plays to advance

William [email protected]

10 yards. When they dothis once, it’s called a“first down.”If a team, though, failsto get 10 yards on itsfourth play they “turnthe ball over” to the oth-er team right where theywere stopped. If a teamhas too many yards to goto get a first down, theycan also punt, or kick theball to the other team, who will have a playerwaiting for it downfield. But, a team can also getin punt formation andfake it and try to advancethe ball the rest of theway for a first down. Ifthey get it or not, a “fakepunt” is usually veryrisky, yet very exciting.

LESSON 3Obviously, the defen-sive team wants to do allthey can within the rulesto stop the offense fromadvancing the ball 10 ormore yards during theoffensive possession. This is where and whythe game looks so violent(for many guys, though, this just might be the at-traction to the game).

Now, let’s go to …

LESSON 4And learn a little bitabout penalties; other-wise known as infrac-tions.HOLDING, is justthat; usually when an of-fensive linemen—thefive biggest guys nearestthe ball on the offense—hold onto someone onthe defense. Or vise ver-sa, and for just about any-one on the field to anoth-er.OFFSIDES: Basicallywhen someone on the of-fense or defense movesahead of the ball from ei-ther direction before thequarterback (or personwith his hands on an of-fensive lineman’s butt)calls for the lineman tosnap it (or give it to him). This one can be trickybut that’s the generalidea.ROUGHING THEPASSER:This one stinksand is making the NFLinto the Girls Scoutscompared to the UnitedStates Marine Corps.(For further explanation, please ask your boyfriendif you have a spare fewhours before The BigGame!)

LESSON 5Some might ask whythe ball is oblong and notround?Good question!Without painstakinglyresearching such an in-tense subject, here’s mytake on it:My own idea is thatshape of the ball wasmade that way to not on-ly differentiate the gamefrom futbol or rugby butto also makes the ball (oroblong leather thingy)easier to hold—and laterin the game’s evolution,to pass it—which is whenThe-Guy-Who-Puts-His-Hands-On-The-Lineman’s-Butt throws itto another guys on histeam (which is signifiedby the same jersey colorand decoration).

NOW, the 6th andsfinal beginners’ lesson“Touchbacks” versus“safeties”: Okay, I’m go-ing to cheat on this one,but according toWikipedia …“A touchback is a rul-ing that is made and sig-naled by an official whenthe ball becomes deadbehind or above a goal

line (i.e., in an end zone)and the team who is at-tacking that goal line is re-sponsible for the ball be-ing there. Responsibility

is determined by whichteam gave the ball the im-petus to travel over oracross the goal line. Suchimpetus may be impartedby a kick, pass, fumble, orin certain instances bybatting the ball. A touch-back is not a play, but a re-

sult of events that may oc-cur during a play.“A touchback is the op-

posite of a safety with re-gard to impetus since asafety is scored when thedefending team is respon-sible for the ball becomingdead behind or above its

A pre-Super Bowl refresher onRoman numerals ...With Super Bowl XLVI approaching, a primer on Romannumerals: I equals 1; V equals 5; X equals 10; L equals50; C equals 100; D equals 500; M equals 1,000Roman numerals are usually arranged in descendingvalue and added up from left to right. But when a smallernumber is placed before a larger one, the smaller valueis subtracted from the larger one to the right. For example: IV is 4, XL is 40 and CM equals 900. SoMCMXLIV is 1944.There are certain restrictions when subtracting. Forexample, 45 is written as XLV, not VL. And 49 is XLIX,not IL.

I thought you weregoing to ask me easyquestions like, ‘Whatcame first, the chick-en or the egg. “I thinkit is going to be a closegame simply becauseof the 49ers defenseand their quarter-back. What’s going tomake it even more in-teresting is you havethe two brotherscoaching the teamswith Jim Harbaugh atthe San Franciscohelm and Ravens’coach John Har-baugh. Imagine theirparents; you’ll haveone son who is ecstat-ic and another intears. How do youhandle that?

I never quite gotover “The Move.”That was in 1996when ClevelandBrowns owner ArtModell decided totake his team to Balti-more. Following a le-gal battle, Ohio keptthe franchise knownas the Browns, but theexisting players wentwith Modell to thenewly created Ravensin Baltimore. We al-ways wished (theRavens) the worst.

I wanted the Bron-cos to be there thisyear. In lieu of Den-ver, I’m going to rootfor the Ravens. Thir-ty-seven-year-oldlinebacker Ray An-thony Lewis, who hasgone to the Pro Bowl13 times, earned sixspots on the Associat-ed Press All-Pro teamand was NFL Defen-sive Player of the yeartwice will carry Balti-more to edge theNiners.
