Loving Libraries by Nick Arnold
This month Loving Libraries gets sun-struck by summer and laid-back with lego, goes bouncing and rhyming and still finds time to de-stress in Bideford.
It’s an actual fact that 99% of us have an ice-cream problem – that’s to say we can’t get enough of it. Fortunately on 1st June Friends of Appledore Library and Hocking’s ice-cream offer an evening of chilly comestibles in the events room at APPLEDORE LIBRARY. Sadly there aren’t
many tickets left but you can ask at the Appledore News Agents, the Library or Docton Court Gallery.
Meanwhile in the Library Alma says the World Book Night Coffee Morning in April was packed with cakes and sea shanties. We’ve got exclusive photos in Loving Libraries this month! Also there are school visits, a Read Easy display and a new fiction collection to browse.
At NORTHAM LIBRARY one thing’s as sure as the word ‘barbecue’ being followed by the word ‘downpour’ – and that’s Lisa will dream up great event ideas. She’s planning craft events, a doggie trust canine-themed event and perhaps a visit from Exmoor Zoo – really?! But there’s one idea that really got me regressing to my mis-spent child-hood and that’s half-term lego session in the library. Lego and libraries go together like coffee and cakes – pure genius!
In TORRINGTON LIBRARY the reading
group are off on an Unlikely Pilgrimage – that’s the one made by Harold Fry in the book of that name. Ask Kate at the Library for details. The first Bounce and Rhyme and Wiggle Bees sessions for pre-schoolers were a delight and the sessions will run (or at least toddle along) on Tuesdays at 10 am
to 16th June. Also in June wide-eyed younger kids from Bluecoats school will be coming to discover how lovely the library is.
And so to the hallowed portals of BIDEFORD LIBRARY where the very successful Meditation sessions run by Nicola MacDonald have multiplied from one to two. You can go on Thursday 4th June at 7.30 am to de-stress in time for work or Wednesday 17th June at 2.15 pm. Other groups meet as usual with the Creative Writing group gathering on Saturday 13th June at 2 pm.
Meanwhile the marvellous people at Royal Voluntary Service are looking for elderly or housebound people who would like books and CD’s delivered to their door. It’s completely free and wonderful so please ring Carole Poulton on 0778 663 5163 if you know anyone in need. Also if you’re a FaceBook person take a look at the new FaceBook pages for Appledore Library and separately Friends of Appledore Library. Why not like them – share them – and be-friend them?
But let’s finish with a purple prose patch. As summer spreads sunlight wings under green boughs and vocal birds sing as long as the long days are long – local libraries face their greatest challenge. The school holidays. Every year libraries challenge kids to read all the books they can in the holidays. This year the theme is “Record Breakers”. It starts on 11th July with a world record-busting bid for reading challenge pledges. So why not pledge your little ‘uns early? Let’s not bend it, crack it or buckle it – let’s smash that record to smithereens! See you in the Library!

Host Families Needed
SOL is a unique and innovative language school and educational charity that provides exciting English language courses for students from Eastern and Central Europe and beyond.
We are looking for caring host families in the Bideford and Barnstaple areas who would be willing to offer accommodation and some of their time to enable our students to experience family life in North Devon. We need both regular and occasional hosts.
Our students have a full daily programme from Monday to Saturday with Sunday being a day to enjoy with their host families. The courses are from 7 to 10 days in length starting in February through to December.
If you feel you may be interested in being a host family and earning some extra money, please contact us.

Well respected, local qualified Personal Trainer also
offers services at a competitive hourly rate, dealing with all aspects of fitness.
It’s been a couple of months since my article has been in the Link Magazine, as I have concentrated on my involve-ment with the Northam Mayfair. I would like to thank Nicola for the fantastic job she allowed us in the centre pages of last month’s Link and I would also like to thank all of you who turned up in great numbers to support the event. Although it was cold there was no rain. I did not sleep the night before because of the atrocious forecast, but it never transpired. A great thank you also goes to all the stallholders and the Entertain-ment Providers and my committee members and our local council for their help and support. It appears from the comments that it was very successful, and we would like to improve on it next year without losing the local appeal and the atmosphere. We need greater support from the local businesses next year. For those that did support us again another thanks to you. Now back to fitness. I perceive the most important aspect of any fitness achievement is psychology. Everyone who has run a marathon or achieved any other sporting goal will know that you have to really psyche yourself up to get through the training and then the event. There will be many obstacles that will stand in your way whether that be adapting to injury or changing the overall goal, but it is the psychology of pushing yourself on through the bad days or bad weather or getting round other objectives that are part of your daily life.
Everyone who has completed a marathon, or triathlon, or a sponsored walk or other participation event will know the buzz or high once you have completed your goal. This psychology that you have applied to get through this event is the same psychology to be applied to any other aspect of your life, yet so often we do not apply this to our other objectives. Losing weight, maintaining a healthy diet, moderating excesses, or maintaining a fitness regime requires you to self-motivate and adopt self-psychology, yet so many people find this hard. Over the next few months I will explain how to adapt your thinking to use these techniques, but perhaps you could think about areas you could apply such techniques and see if these fit in with my future articles. It’s nice to be back,
I missed you all. Ian

been known as Bideford & District Cacti & Pot Plant Club, quite a mouthful to get around. It is also a big misnomer as for much of its entire past it has covered all gardening subjects and indeed many

general subject as well for its talks and meetings.
With the demise of other local clubs of the more general horticultural nature we felt it time to change and to appeal to a wider cross section.
With this in mind the club members have decided to make a radical change and it will now be known as Bideford Gardeners Club, still based at the
Bideford Methodist Church Hall for its meetings and in the Pannier Market for its Annual Flower Show, which this year is on 23rd August which
includes the spectacular National Begonia Society South West Show. Our season of talks and events commences in March each year and runs through
to December. April 14th will be a talk by Nick Oliver form St John’s Garden Centre on Spring Colour. We also go out on trips and for our May
event we will be running a trip to Pinetum Park and Pine Lodge Gardens, with a visit to Charles-town. The rest of the year is also well planned out
so we urge anyone interested in good social events and talks with a gardening bias to get in touch with us and join our club. Information can be
obtained through Secretary Mike Avis email [email protected] or by phone 01237 475914.
