The Bicentennial Is Almost Upon Us -
Key Elements of Indiana 2016
• This is a grassroots celebration, driven by 550 communities, 92 counties, hundreds of organizations throughout the state. All 6.5 million Hoosiers can participate.
• Leave a Legacy. Celebrate, make memories, and help prepare Indiana for the next 100 years of progress and change.

• Approved at their April, 2014 meeting: – Bicentennial Nature Trust (DNR) – Bicentennial Plaza (IDOA) – Statehouse Education and Welcome Center (IDOA) – Archives Solution (IDOA) – Torch Relay (IOTD) – Bicentennial Commemorative Book – Bicentennial Coin – Bicentennial Art Project – Celebratory Events
Legacy Projects & Events
• Projects or events MUST be: – Open and accessible to the public – Tied in some way to the bicentennial – Fundable (without Commission support) – Achievable
• Must also meet at least one of the following recommended goals or characteristics: – Culturally inclusive – Creating a legacy for the future – Celebratory – Engaging and inspiring to youth and young adults

Connected Communities
• North Manchester– Bison-tennial project with local K-12 schools, MU, Chamber of Commerce and Civic Groups
• Marshall County – Recording the American Perspective Digitally recorded stories of World War II as told by the
veterans who served. • Montgomery County – Restoration of Courthouse Clock
Tower • Boone County – Senior Biography Project – interviews with
centenarians – booklet of memories and stories • LaPorte County – Prominent People - museum exhibit
highlighting local citizens with broad impact.
Connected Communities (Local Examples)
• The town of Avon has set a goal to plant 200 trees to celebrate the state’s Bicentennial. Residents are encouraged to join the effort by pledging to plant a tree.
• The town commissioned a steel sculpture in the form of ‘200’ to celebrate the town’s 20th anniversary this year and the state’s bicentennial next year.
Connected Communities (More Local Examples)
• The towns of Avon and Brownsburg collaborated to construct “The Bicentennial Trail.” This one-mile segment will connect the Avon and Brownsburg trail systems. Design is scheduled for 2015 with construction to begin in 2016.
• The Danville Rotary Club plans to create a firefighter-themed community park on a vacant parcel of land along U.S. 36 just west of the square. They hope to have the ribbon cutting next year.
Events
• Local event organizers should
consider adding a history component or theme and then file for Bicentennial endorsement.
• Groups, communities or individuals also are welcome to create new events focused on the Bicentennial and seek endorsement.

Torch Relay
Torch Relay • Hendricks County will be the 40th
county the torch will enter • 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23, 2016
(A route deviation was submitted and is under consideration by the state)
• Torchbearer nominations are currently being accepted through Dec. 31, 2015, for past or current Hendricks County residents

Volunteer
• Committees are being formed and volunteers are needed to guide and help with Hendricks County’s celebration
• Legacy Project Committee – Oversee the county’s Legacy Projects
• Bicentennial Events Committee – Keep track of all local events related to Bicentennial
• Marketing/Communications – Help with any local promotions related to the Bicentennial
• General Bicentennial or Torch Relay volunteer
Become a Partner
• Leave your legacy by creating or helping with a Bicentennial Project or Event
• Turn out for the Torch Relay in 2016 • Make sure we know about your activities so we can help spread the word • Nominate a local torchbearer
Grow a Partner
• Have a local company help with the bicentennial through an in-kind gift of services – publishing, marketing, making shirts, stamping medallions, helping with a legacy project.
