1. Once again, prevero achieves good results in BARC’s BI Survey, significantly improving on previous years. Excellent ratings, particularly for ‘Business benefits’ – one of the most important KPIs in the whole survey – and ‘Flexibility for users’, help to consolidate its position as a leading BI and CPM vendor in the DACH region. Companies can benefit greatly from using prevero, especially in terms of faster and more accurate reporting, analysis or planning and improved data quality. With its flexible platform approach, prevero offers good flexibility to address various BI and CPM use cases on one integrated platform. Overall, BI Survey results show that prevero satisfies many of its customers, in particular in the DACH region.

The BI Survey 17 is based on findings from the world‘s largest and most comprehensive survey of business intelligence end users, conducted from February to June 2017. In total, 3,066 people responded to the survey with 2,564 answering a series of detailed questions about their usage of a named product. Altogether, 42 products (or groups of products) are analyzed in detail.
The BI Survey 17 examines user feedback on BI product selection and usage across 29 criteria (KPIs) including business benefits, project success, business value, recommendation, customer satisfaction, customer experience, innovation and competitiveness. There are 29 KPIs in total.
This document contains just a selection of the headline findings for prevero. It does not show all the KPI results and focuses mainly on the positive findings.
For more information on the survey, visit The BI Survey website.
Introductionprevero was originally founded as a consultancy in 1994. The company is based in Munich, Germany, and has a workforce of approximately 200 employees worldwide as well as an international partner network. In recent years, prevero has grown into one of the largest performance management vendors in the DACH region in terms of soft-ware revenues, and claims to have a client base of more than 4,500 companies in over 30 countries. Its growth has been largely organic but was also boosted considerably by the acquisition of software vendors Winterheller in 2011 and MIK in 2015. In July 2016 prevero itself agreed to be acquired by Unit4, a Dutch provider of enterprise applica-tions (e.g. ERP) for service organizations.
prevero’s product portfolio includes the prevero platform technology, which can be used for various BI and perfor-mance management use cases. prevero is positioned as a flexible platform for tailor-made planning and BI solutions. The company also offers a web-based financial consoli-dation solution called prevero Consolidation (OEM Sigma Conso), which is integrated with prevero at database level.
prevero is targeted at business users who build BI and performance management applications with the help of wizards. The tool provides a flexible development en-vironment for building individual applications for planning, reporting and analysis, which is supported by dialog boxes and requires no knowledge of scripting.
For historical reasons, prevero has a strong focus on the utilities sector and it offers pre-built content specifically for this industry. Approximately 20-30 percent of pre-vero’s clients come from this sector. Despite this, prevero positions itself as industry-neutral and now wins more new clients outside the utilities sector. An additional predefined industry model is available for airports, and prevero also offers predefined business applications for areas such as project portfolio management, strategic controlling and risk management.
MIK (prevero) has a long history as a BI vendor in the DACH region and has had a presence in the market for over 30 years now. MIK (prevero) claims to have a client base of more than 20,000 users and 200 customers, primarily located in the DACH region. The vendor’s pro-duct portfolio includes the BI suite prevero.STARLIGHT, prevero.ARJUNA (the suite’s proprietary 64-bit multidimen-sional OLAP database) and prevero.ETL (data integration in prevero.ARJUNA or relational databases).
MIK (prevero)’s BI suite is based on a 3-tier architecture including database, application server and clients. The vendor’s proprietary multidimensional OLAP database pre-vero.ARJUNA, a Microsoft .NET development, is included for data storage. prevero.STARLIGHT provides two diffe-rent clients for end users: A Microsoft Silverlight-based web client and an Excel add-in called prevero.XYLONA. User interfaces for administration and prevero.ETL are provided with installed clients.
prevero.STARLIGHT is a flexible, graphical development environment for creating tailor-made BI solutions. The product is targeted at business power users who build BI applications with the help of wizards in a self-service manner. Access to applications is typically web-based. The well integrated suite provides functionality for creating screen-oriented reporting, OLAP analysis, individual dash-boarding and planning applications. Consequently, a wide variety of different BI use cases can be addressed with prevero.STARLIGHT. Furthermore, more than 100 business functions are available as standard in the product (e.g. pe-riodic accumulation, weighted average, relative deviation etc.), which can be executed in the database and integra-ted with the prevero.STARLIGHT user interface.

User and Use CaseDemographics
Besides its main use cases, standard/enterpri-se reporting, budgeting/planning and ad hoc query, prevero is now also frequently used for basic data analysis and dashboards/sco-recards. Advanced analysis and dashboards/scorecards have been earmarked by many customers for the future.
prevero targets mid-sized companies and large corporations across all industries. 69 percent of our sample of prevero customers come from mid-sized companies (100-2,500 employees) with a median of 100 users. Howe-ver, the mean of 345 users indicates there are also some larger implementations.
prevero is geared to business power users with broad functionality for various planning and BI tasks. Typical tasks carried out with prevero by business power users include viewing, navigating, exploring and modeling data. These tasks achieve above average use by prevero customers, which underlines the feature richness of the product.

The BI Survey 17 provides the reader with well-desi-gned KPI dashboards packed with concise informa-tion, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules:
• Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the basis for KPIs.
• KPIs may be based on one or more measures from The BI Survey.
• Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the questions that feed into the KPI are included.
• For quantitative data, KPIs are conver-ted to a scale of 1 to 10 (worst to best).
• A linear min-max transformation is ap-plied, which preserves the order of, and the relative distance between, pro-ducts‘ scores.
The terms ‘top-ranked’ and ‘leader’ are used in the following KPI chart titles. ‘Top-ranked’ indicates first position. ‘Leader’ usually denotes a position in the top 25-30% of products listed in the chart.
Peer Group Classification Peer Groups Overview
The KPIs
The BI Survey 17 features a range of different types of BI tools so we use peer groups to help identify competing products. The groups are essential to al-low fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete.
The peer groups have been defined by BARC ana-lysts using their experience and judgment, with segmentation based on two key factors:
1. Usage scenario - functional peer groups are mainly data-driven and ba-sed on how customers say they use the product.
2. Regional focus - is the vendor a large international vendor with a truly global presence or does it focus on a particu-lar region? We also take into account the location of BI Survey respondents.
prevero (prevero) features in the following peer groups:
• OLAP analysis-focused products
• Integrated performance management products
• EMEA-focused vendors
This KPI is based on the achievement level of a variety of business benefits.
Business benefits
prevero in ©2017 BARC - Business Application Research Center, a CXP Group Company 15
Viewpoint
prevero is top-ranked in all its peer groups for the business benefits customers achieve with the tool. The vendor’s ‘Business benefits’ rankings have improved in each of the last four editions of The BI Survey, culminating in the top position in every peer group prevero features in this year. Benefits such as faster and more accurate reporting, analysis or planning and improved data quality are regularly achieved with prevero. With its platform approach, customers can create various BI and CPM applications on different aggregation levels (strategic as well as operational). Customers clearly benefit from having all these possi-bilities in one common platform.

Project success
prevero in ©2017 BARC - Business Application Research Center, a CXP Group Company 18
Viewpoint
The results in this year’s BI Survey confirm that prevero’s customers are satisfied with their BI and CPM projects, particularly in the budgeting/planning space. Many projects seem to be accomplished on time and on budget and project goals defined at the outset are often reached. There are various reasons for this: prevero’s single-product offering provides functionality for many different BI and CPM use cases such as standard/enterprise reporting, budgeting/planning, ad hoc query, basic data analysis and dashboards/sco-recards. This gives customers a degree of flexibility in addressing various needs. Since prevero does many projects itself, the vendor’s experienced consulting team should also take some credit for this excellent result. The level of support in implementation projects is highly rated by customers as the vendor’s consul-tants show a solid understanding of customers’ business requirements.

‘Business value’ combines the ‘Business benefits’, ‘Project success’ and ‘Project length’ KPIs. With good re-sults in two of these KPIs, prevero also achieves leading ranks for ‘Business value’ in its three peer groups. The results of this year’s BI Survey prove that prevero creates real business value for customers. Business benefits such as faster and more accurate reporting, analysis and planning, and improved data quality are regularly achieved with prevero. Many projects tend to be successful and seem to be accomplished on time and on budget. Project goals defined at the outset are often reached. The business benefits achie-ved and the success of projects combine to create satisfied customers, which are an essential ingredient for success in the highly competitive market for BI and CPM software in the DACH region, prevero’s home market.

Flexibility for users
prevero in ©2017 BARC - Business Application Research Center, a CXP Group Company 23
Flexibility and breadth of functionality are the main reasons why customers choose prevero. The product provides a flexible development environment for building individual BI applications for planning, reporting, dashboarding and analysis. With its integrated platform approach, business power users in particular can create individual applications without the need for programming skills in an Excel-like environment. prevero does not focus on any one particular topic (e.g. financials, sales, HR, etc.) or industry. However, predefined industry content is available for airports and the utilities sector as well as for business areas such as project portfolio management, strategic controlling and risk management. For the fourth year in a row, prevero is top-ranked for flexibility in every single peer group it features in – an outstanding result.

In particular, the general behavior of prevero’s professional sales team, the timely and thorough response to product-re-lated and technical questions from customers and the ability to understand organizations’ needs are highlighted by customers. In a competitive market like the BI and CPM software market in the DACH region, prevero’s home market, a highly professional sales organization is essential to survive and conti-nue to win new customers.

Prevero’s strong showing in the ‘Cloud BI’ KPI reveals that a significant amount of customers use the pro-duct in a cloud environment. prevero’s cloud offering is based on Microsoft Azure (SaaS, multi-tenant). The customer can choose where the solution is hosted. Using the TelekomCLOUD for example, hosting (inclu-ding data storage) in a German computer center is available. This fact particularly seems to convince and comfort prevero’s DACH customers, who are typically rather reserved and cautious when it comes to cloud implementations. Technical prerequisites such as secure communication via https between clients and server, browser-based access (using prevero’s HTML5 OneClient), and server operation in the cloud are available. However, prevero’s mandatory rich client for administration and modeling still has to be installed locally.

User and Use CaseDemographics
The main use cases for MIK (prevero) are basic data analysis (typically OLAP analysis), stan-dard/enterprise reporting, ad hoc query and budgeting/planning. Dashboards/scorecards and advanced analysis are on the roadmap for many customers in the future.
Only eight percent of employees in customer organizations use MIK (prevero) – compared to the survey average of 17 percent. This reflects the fact that the product is particularly geared to business power users with its broad functionality for various BI and planning tasks, rather than being a product for the masses.
MIK (prevero) targets mid-sized companies and large corporations across all industries. 65 percent of our sample of MIK (prevero) customers come from mid-sized companies (100-2,500 employees) with a median of 100 users. However, the mean of 520 users indica-tes the product is capable of supporting larger implementations.

MIK (prevero) features in the following peer groups:
• OLAP analysis-focused products
• Integrated performance management products
• EMEA-focused vendors
This KPI is based on how many sites currently use self-service features with their BI tool.
Self-service
prevero in ©2017 BARC - Business Application Research Center, a CXP Group Company 33
prevero.STARLIGHT is a flexible, graphical development environment for creating tailor-made BI applica-tions without the need for technical programming skills. Thus, trained business power users are able to work with the product in a self-service manner. By additionally using the vendor’s OLAP database prevero.ARJUNA for creating multidimensional business models and prevero.ETL for data integration in these mo-dels, business departments can largely act independently from IT departments. Furthermore, MIK (prever-o)’s Excel add-in prevero.XYLONA provides business user-friendly multidimensional analyses in Excel on top of prevero.ARJUNA OLAP cubes. Many customers clearly appreciate the functionality and ease of use the front ends, database and ETL product provide. As a result, MIK (prevero) is ranked as a leader in two of its peer groups and is top-ranked for ‘Self-service’ in the ‘Integrated performance management products’ peer group.
