Sterben Ist Kein Kinderspiel Rev. Jonathan Walla

Dear Saints,

Approximately three months ago, a 94-year-old pastor died. He had been an ordained pastor in the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod for 70 years. He also had been married for 70 years. His name was Rev. Dr. Edwin Suelflow. Throughout this time, he had served as pastor for 40 years in congregations in Nebraska and Wisconsin, as well as holding the position of district president for the South Wisconsin District for 6 more years.

In September of this past year, Dr. Suelflow was recognized for his 70th ordination anniversary at the district pastors’ conference. He asked to offer a few words (what pastor doesn’t like to talk!), and he shared about the power of the Word of God to change the hearts and minds of people, to lead them to repentance, to bring comfort and peace to the sorrowing and distraught, and to offer hope and the assurance of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life.

He shared a memory of a man who had been his professor in prep school, who later in life would become one of his parishioners. Suelflow became his former professor’s pastor. It was a great relationship. They would get together to play pinochle. But the man eventually was diagnosed with cancer. On the afternoon that he died, Pastor Suelflow sat by his bed and shared the Word of God with him, offered prayer, and spoke the words of the benediction. The man was too weak to respond to anything. But he was able to get one phrase out, in just a whisper: “Sterben ist kein kinderspiel.” For some reason, he reverted to speaking German at that moment, but Dr. Suelflow knew exactly what it meant: “Dying is no child’s play.”

As this man’s pastor, Dr. Suelflow began wondering if this phrase was referring to Martin Luther’s teaching on the devil’s attempts right up to the moment of death to dissuade the believer in Christ – to cause fear and doubt and unbelief. Whether that was what the man had in mind or not, there was great truth to this simple phrase, and it became the opening sentence at the funeral. “Sterben ist kein kinderspiel.”

In the Sundays following Easter, our Bible Study will take up this phrase to consider the ways in which we may take seriously the plans and preparations for our death and funeral, but even more, so that we may find comfort in the promise that Jesus’ resurrection brings in the face of death. Dying may be no child’s play, but Jesus does not leave us to face alone. In fact, nothing – not even sterben – will be able to separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord! (Rom. 8:39). I pray that you will join us, beginning on April 28!

In Christ, Pastor Walla

Also, for Men’s Ministry, men from the Bismarck-Mandan LCMS congregations meet on the 3rd Saturday for breakfast and Bible Study. Pastor Walla has completed the “Man Up” study and Vicar Woodside will take over leading a study on Spiritual Disciplines.

The woodburning stove fireplace insert has been installed at the parsonage and works well.

In June, Pastor Walla will be attending the first session of Doxology, a conference to encourage clergy in their care for their congregations. The second session will be in November 2018 at which Bethel lay leaders are invited to attend. The third session, for pastors and their spouses, will be in the summer of 2020.

The Joint Bethel/Shepherd of the Valley Leadership (SOTV) Team has recommended to both congregations that we continue with the vicarage program. The deadline to submit an application is March 15. On behalf of the Joint Leadership Team, Gary Rath made the following motion:

“Be it resolved by the Voters’ Assembly of Bethel Lutheran Church meeting on Sunday, February 24, 2019, under the

guidance of the Holy Spirit and in accordance with the Constitution and Bylaws of Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, North Dakota, in cooperation and agreement with Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Bismarck, North Dakota, makes application for a vicar for the 2019-2020 academic year.”

The motion was seconded and approved by the Voters. As a point of information, District President Ari Bertsch is seeking a Pastoral Candidate to fill the Hannover/New Salem vacancy. However, with only 80 graduates from the two Seminaries this year, chances are not likely that the District will receive a Candidate for this position.

Light of Christ schools has informally indicated that their daycare at Bethel will close mid-May with the remainder of May and June scheduled for clean-up/renovations. Legally, the lease allows them to extend through December 2019. While Bethel’s relationship with the daycare worked well, we did not anticipate the extent to which Bethel’s use of the space would be limited. Bethel has already been approached by another organization requesting classroom space for one-half day per week for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Pastor has been elected as the Circuit Delegate to the Synodical Convention in July 2019 in Tampa, FL. Prior to the Synodical Convention, the Synodical President will be elected by an online vote. Bethel is allowed one Pastoral and one Lay elector. The Council has recommended that Paul Harron, Congregational President be elected as our Lay elector. A motion was made, seconded and passed.

Vicar’s Report – Pastor Walla Vicar Woodside, who is absent as he is currently teaching the High School Bible Study, has been teaching the youth every Sunday either at Bethel or SOTV. He also teaches Confirmation class weekly at either Bethel or SOTV. Additionally, Vicar performs prison, shut-in and hospital visits. Vicar Woodside has also been helping provide pulpit supply throughout the circuit.

Education-Dawn Carpenter Vacation Bible School will be a three-day event to be held on May 28-30th.

Together with Mark & Laurie Thompson, Dawn will be the co-director of this year’s Living Last Supper drama. Members are encouraged to participate.

Elders – Gary Rath The Board extended a thank you to Bruce Burkett and Mike Lynk for their service on the Board of Elders. They welcomed Mike Fagerland and Bob Kjonaas as new Elders.

The Elders will be sponsoring a Benefit Breakfast for Debbie Wanner on Sunday, March 10th between services.

In addition, they are tentatively planning to serve supper before the Living Last Supper drama with a freewill offering going to the Social Crisis Assistance Fund. Several Bethel members have benefitted from this fund, but the Board would like to be able to reach out to more members.

Outreach – Candace Harron The Board will also be assisting with funding the Living Last

Supper drama in April.

Last month, the Board hosted the Friendship Feast where more than 40 people enjoyed a meal catered by the Olive Garden.

Another Pinochle tournament is scheduled for Sunday, March 3rd.

And this year’s Easter Eggstravaganza will be held the Wednesday of Holy week, April 17th.

Property Management – Blake Wiedrich

The Board expressed their appreciation to Bob Ebbesen for the beautiful custom cabinet and cabinet handle replacements for the kitchen.

The Council approved for the Board to retrofit the fluorescent light fixtures in the Fellowship Hall, offices and narthex with LED fixtures. This will be a savings in energy (from 130 watts to 36 watts per fixture) and a reduction in bulbs (4 down to 2 per fixture).

Thank you to Donavon Bauer for his service on the Board. Matt Graves, Mike, James & William Lynk and Adam Miller have volunteered to join the Board.

Renovations are being planned for the church nursery to include returning the closet door (with a lock for administrative storage) and fresh painting. Toys and books will also be reduced and/or removed so the janitorial staff are better able to clean this room.

We have successfully transitioned from Waste Management to Trans Trash for our garbage collection.

Blake, who has already received one bid for $9,135 from Dakota Concepts, will be seeking additional bids to chip seal the parking lot.

Per the City Fire Marshall recommendation, the Board is looking to replace the emergency exit signs with battery back-up emergency exit lighting.

The old snowblower has been sold for $250.

The Board is also going to be covering the parsonage basement floor tile with 3’x3’ carpet tiles.

Stewardship – Ed Stern The 2019 General Fund Budget (attached) was presented. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the Final Budget.

Treasurer’s Report – Brett Morlok The 2018 End of Year and Balance Sheet reports were distributed (attached). For the year, our income was 94% of projected values. As shown on the report, the Light of Christ lease payments were set aside in a fund for future spending. With likewise reduced expenditures, Bethel finished the year with a surplus of $2,522.13. Per the Balance Sheet, we have

approximately $212,000 left on our Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) loan. Also shown is a new CD in which the

treasurer transferred $40,000 in savings for the 40-month at 4% investment in the LCEF. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the Treasurer’s reports.

(Continued from page 9) Vice-President’s Report – Doug Miller The Voters of Bethel officially elected Doug Miller to be our next Congregational Vice-President for the 2019-2021 term.

President’s Report – Paul Harron – no report

Endowment Committee Report – Paul Harron & Brett Morlok The Endowment Committee reviewed options proposed by Bethel members to manage the Ernest Ohlhauser Estate gift. The following recommendations were determined based on prioritizing the current needs of the congregation and throughout our district: (As the exact payout value has not been finalized, $250,000 was used as an estimate.)

1. DISTRICT MISSIONS: $25,000 (approximately 10% of the gift) will be forwarded to the North Dakota District LCMS to be used in supporting its in-district and other mission projects as determined by the Board of Directors

2. LOCAL MISSIONS: A gift of $20,000 will be used to reduce the legacy debts of Martin Luther School.

3. BETHEL IMPROVEMENTS: $30,000 of the gift will be used to professionally evaluate and improve the sound and videotape recording systems at Bethel.

4. BETHEL DEBT REDUCTION: The remaining portion of the gift, approximately $175,000 shall be paid to the principal of the existing Lutheran Church Extension Fund Building Loan with the expressed purpose of reducing the term of the loan.

These recommendations were approved by Bethel’s Council and further recommended to the Voters for approval. Items of discussion:

• Taxes: Bethel is exempt from paying taxes on this gift as long as the funds are used for religious purposes.

• Current loan payoff. It is anticipated that with our normal monthly payments and the addition of the $175,000 principal payment, Bethel will be able to burn our mortgage in the next year. The Endowment Committee has suggested inviting the Ohlhauser family as special guests when we celebrate paying off this debt.

• Bethel Building Renovations Phase II: With Phase I nearly paid off, it was recommended that the Council begin planning for Phase II renovations. The Council has discussed this and would like to reassess the needs of the congregation to determine what renovations would be most useful.

The motion to accept the Ohlhauser gift recommendations was seconded and approved by the Voters.

Additionally, the Endowment Committee made a recommendation to Council for Voter approval to change the name of the designated memorial fund entitled “Bell Choir” to “Music Department” to more generally serve future music needs. The motion was seconded and approved by the Voters.

There being no further business, the meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer led by Pastor Walla.

Average attendance in February was 212 people, down slightly due to winter weather.

Special upcoming Sundays:

• April 21 – Easter Sunday

• April 28 – Confirmation Sunday worship at 11 am. Confirmation Banquet hosted by Elders on Saturday, April 27th. One student, Faith Heim, who is unable to attend on the 28th will be confirmed on May 12th.

• May 5 – New Member Recognition during worship services and fellowship time; Quarterly Voters’ Meeting between services

• May 19 – Last Day of Sunday School-Teacher Appreciation Day; Baccalaureate worship (TBA)

Pastor is taking a group of youth to the Higher Things retreat in Minot on March 29-30th.

The Men’s Network breakfast will be held this Saturday, March 16th at Shepherd of the Valley (SOTV). Vicar is leading the Bible Study on Spiritual Disciplines. Pastor Walla is challenging Bethel men to help grow this ministry.

The Board of Elders will be holding a supper before each performance of the Living Last Supper. The freewill offering collected at the “Dinner with the Disciples” will benefit the Social Crisis Assistance Fund. The meal will be from 6-7 pm on Friday, April 12 (ham & scalloped potatoes) and Saturday, April 12 (spaghetti).

The Elders have been training their new board members. They are also planning to conduct some usher training (TBA).

A Facility Use Request has been given by a local Catholic homeschool group to use the Education Wing for a half day per week for the 2019-2020 academic year. The group is made up of approximately 40 school-age students, 20 preschoolers and 20 parents. They do have their own insurance. The request was put on hold until Light of Christ (LoC) gave official notification of their lease termination. Pastor has received a phone call from LoC informing Bethel that they plan to end care services by mid-June and

complete the terms of the lease by the end of June. Pastor Walla asked Blake Wiedrich, Property Management to attend an on-site meeting with the homeschool group to tour our facility and gather additional information. Members of the Council want to make sure that any new lease be made on a year-to-year basis so that Bethel can determine our long-term plans for this space. In addition, Property Management indicated that they will conduct a walk-through of the Education Wing to make a checklist of needed repairs by LoC.

Board of Education– Dawn Carpenter

Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be a 3-day event to be held May 28-30. Pastor Walla has begun writing this year’s curriculum.

Board of Outreach Report –Cheryl Wiedrich

A Pinochle tournament was held on March 3rd with 18 participants.

The Easter Eggstravaganza (carnival games and crafts instead of an egg hunt) will be held during Holy Week, Wednesday, April 17th. They are asking that the 6-12 grade students assist with the games.

On May 19th, the Board will host an Armed Forces Day Potluck at noon.

Property Management Report –Blake Wiedrich

The Board is investigating the source of the roof leak over the kitchen/fellowship hall. Team members removed as much snow as possible from that area and believe the heat tray in the roof valley is functioning. Additional roof raking is planned for today.

The LED fixtures and bulbs have been purchased. The fixtures in the church office have been retrofitted. The Board will be planning a work day to install the others in the fellowship hall.

In preparation for the new sound system, the Board will be working on cleaning out the old wiring and accumulated dust from the wood valences in the sanctuary.

To accommodate additional wheelchair seating, the Board will be shortening the back pew. The pew will be transported to John Sebastian’s heated workshop where Bob Ebbesen will make the modifications.

Board of Stewardship – Ed Stern

The Board has evaluated the details of the Offering Envelope order and gave the final 2020 order to the Administrative Assistant for processing.

Treasurer Report – Brett Morlok

Brett distributed copies of the February 2019 Transaction Detail Report.

Endowment Report – Brett Morlok

Brett is continuing to follow up with the Ernest Ohlhauser Estate’s attorney to finalize the payout to Bethel.

“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out” (Deut 28:3-6).

This is God’s promise to the Israelites as they stood beyond the Jordan outside of the Promised Land. He promises blessing to His people. He will make them prosper, whether they are in the city or the field. He will make their fruit of their work to prosper, whether from the ground or their wombs, their flocks or their herds. He will make them to prosper in all things, whether upon their coming in or their going out.

But there’s a catch. He would do this for Israel only “if you

obey the voice of the Lord your God” (Deut 28:2b). If they did that, He would cause that “all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you” (Deut 28:2a).

If they didn’t obey the voice of the Lord, if they didn’t keep the commandments of the Lord and walk in His ways (Deut 28:9), they would be met with curse and woe. The blessings would be replaced with curses. Everything that the Lord promised to prosper and bless would be cursed and fail.

Thanks be to God that our Lord Jesus Christ has come into our flesh, fulfilled the law for us – in in our place and for our benefit; died for us – in our place and for our benefit; and is

A Message on Stewardship www.lcms.org/how-we-serve/national/stewardship-ministry

risen from the dead for us – in our place and for our benefit.

By this we have justification before God. We are forgiven, clean, holy, and righteous. The blessing of God is promised to us in Christ Jesus. It depends upon His work and not ours.

All this is ours in Holy Baptism. For in Holy Baptism, God claims us as His own, makes us His children, His heirs, His holy people. And so it is that the work of our hands and its fruit is holy because we are holy in Christ. It is pressed into His service, and thereby it becomes a blessing to us and to our neighbor.

For this great gift, our reception of the blessings of God because of Christ Jesus our Lord, it is our duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is not in order to receive blessings but because in Christ we already have.

It is with this in mind that we sit down on the first day of the week and set aside as He has prospered us to give to His church for His work of blessing in our midst (1 Cor. 16:2).

Vicar’s Report – Vicar Justin Woodside

Vicar has recently collaborated on the Escape Room event.

He continues with weekly visits to the jail for inmate visits as well as his regular shut-in visitation schedule to John & Edna Galster, Roland & Adeline Essig, Harold Hepper and Jack & Barb Gordon.

This week he will assist with a funeral at SOTV. He will serve

(Continued from page 11) at Bethel this Sunday as well as the next three Wednesdays.

The meeting was closed in prayer led by Pastor Walla.

The next Council meeting will be Sunday, April 14. 2019 at 6:30 pm.
