Rabbi Ari Dembitzer Rabbi
Shalom Beth Israel. We are in the middle of the cold Nebraska winter. Growth seems stagnant. We stay indoors, indulging in the warmth of our homes. But alas, it is the Hebrew month of "Shevat." We are turning the corner of winter, and we see glimpses of growth. Our rabbis tell us that Shevat is the new year for trees, or growth. We are gathering all our strength, learning, davening, and spiritually preparing to spring out of our own borders. Leaving our personal "Egypt" which in Hebrew means "limits.” As always, I am encouraging all to participate in our e x c i t i n g l e a r n i n g opportunities so we can push our limits and create larger borders.
AbouttheCover:
SIEGMUND FORST (1904- )
Signed and numbered woodcuts by Siegmund
Forst. Forst was born in Vienna and studied there
in the Academy of Arts. He came to the United
States in 1939. The phrase on the cover means:
WiththearrivalofthemonthofAdar,one's
happinessincreases.
The month of Adar is a particularly joyous one
because the festival of Purim takes place in that
month. It is also the month that precedes Nissan,
the month in which the holiday of Passover occurs.
The two 4ish represent spring and fertility.
Rabbi Yaakov Weiss Assistant Rabbi
If you had an extra hour in the day, what would you do with it? Everyone has their own answers, sleep, watch TV, spend time with family, learn, etc.
There are some interesting components of the Jewish calendar if you spend the time learning them. The Jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle as opposed to the solar cycle. That means that side-by-side, the Jewish calendar is about 10-12 days shorter than the secular calendar. In order to ensure that the holidays fall in the appropriate time of the year (especially since many of the Jewish holidays are intrinsically connected with the agricultural cycle of Israel), we make it a leap year seven times out of every 19 year cycle. A whole month is added to the calendar in a Jewish leap year.
This year we have an extra month—an extra month of Adar, and we even have an extra day of February too.
What will you do with all that extra time? Our own time and control over it is one of the great gifts that was given to each of us.

OmahaTeenTriptoIsrael
BySamKricsfeld
Nothing can compare to the landscapes and panoramas of the Golan
Heights and the Negev Desert. Nothing can compare to the Kotel at night
or helping restore the ancient walls of Akko. Nothing can compare to the
Mega Teen Mission Trip to Israel.
Saying that Rabbi Ari, Josh Polack, Joshua Kurtzman, Max Goldberg, and I
were proud to be the representatives of Beth Israel Synagogue is an
understatement. As Rabbi proved himself to be the Energizer Bunny
himself, every teen on the trip got to experience the land of our ancestors
in a light that cannot ever be replicated. We experienced a year’s worth of
Israel in ten days. To list just a few of the places we saw: Independence
Hall, an Ethiopian house, Sulam Tzor High School, simulated IDF training,
Rosh Haniqra, the Western Galilee Medical Center, the Ghetto Fighters
Museum, the ancient walls of Akko, a Druze village, the Kinneret, the
Kotel, Yad VaShem, Mt. Herzl, and the Dead Sea. It was a Crash Course on Judaism, one that managed to
bring together our community. Ask anyone on the trip; they are guaranteed to tell you that no matter
what shul you are from or how religious you are, we are all Jewish, and Israel is all our home. The land
that G-d promised to the Jewish people is now ours, and we will willfully support it throughout our
entire lives because of this trip. L’Shana Habah beYerusalayim seems more enticing than ever before.
YachadiscollectingitemsforcarepackagesforIsraelisoldiers

in the JCC Social Hall by our Yachad members.

New Jersey NCSY Comes to Omaha - February 26-28
A group of 10th grade students from NCSY and the Frisch School in New Jersey will travel to Omaha,
February 24-28. These young men and women will be volunteering as part of a Leadership Chesed
Mission. The purpose of this Leadership Mission is to teach our teens the value of Chesed, Achdut,
and Tikkun Olam while exposing them to the beauty of smaller Jewish communities around the
country. While in Omaha, the group will be volunteering within the JCC campus and bonding with
the Jewish community as a whole. The teens will also be given the opportunity to work with Habitat
for Humanity, working to construct and repair homes as well as the lives of their inhabitants. Avital
Moss, Director of Director of Special Projects, New Jersey NCSY, explained “Our goal is to create a
sense of unity among the greater community and the beautiful bond that exists between all Jewish
communities around the world. The group had an incredible experience last year with the Beth Israel
community, and we’re excited to bring a new group to experience the warmth of Beth Israel and
Omaha.”
