TWe’re back with our third annual Best of Salt Spring Island publication, a project that’s perfect for summertime when our island shines more than usual thanks to perfect weather and the energy of visitors, and most folks are in a positive mood.

T

F R O M U S , T O Y O U

This summer islanders were thrilled to see the appearance of hand-painted

destination signs for hitchhikers to use at the bottom of Ganges Hill, courtesy of Bryan Dubien, who you see on our cover with his son Oliver. It’s one of Bryan’s quietly bestowed “community gifts” and we heartily applaud him for his initiative and generosity.

Inside, besides the colourful images, ideas and helpful information provided by our advertisers, you’ll fi nd pieces on topics ranging from getaway spots to local salmon fi shing,

endangered species and the activities of some of our best-loved community groups.

We’ve pinpointed the island’s most creative tweeter and “historic fi nd in a garage,” and give general kudos to our fantastic farmstands.

For those hankering to become a real islander, check out Arthur Black’s well-steeped advice on page 26. Just be prepared to get up close and personal with your fellow travellers on the rock, or to put a little foliage on your car.

While you’re feeling inspired by the contents of this year’s BOSSI, please take a moment to send me some ideas for non-commercial “bests” we can explore for next year’s edition. Nothing is too quirky to not be considered!

Al Hoskins and Woodstock with a giant maple leaf.

Best place to fi nd a record-breaking

maple leaf

THE

Al Hoskins was out walking his dog when he stumbled into the record books last fall.

Hoskins and Woodstock were walking in a forested area near the Fulford Community Elementary School on South Ridge Drive when they came across an enormous leaf from a big leaf maple tree. The tree may be renowned for its large leaves, but Hoskins’ discovery set a new standard.

Since he’d read about some hikers near Port Alberni who’d found a record-breaker only a few weeks earlier, Hoskins had been on the lookout, certain that he could top the record. Sure enough, his discovery measured 57 centimetres wide and a whopping 73.7 centimetres in length.

What’s even more incredible is that Hopkins found an

even larger specimen several years before, but didn’t give it a second thought.

Hoskins never pursued the folks at the Guinness Book of World Records because of the costs associated with getting an adjudicator over to the island confi rm the fi nding, but he’s confi dent the island has many other record-holders waiting to be uncovered along South Ridge Drive.

Wow...way to go,

Al!

Marie-Luise Fröhlich with Swan Lady cake.

Submitted By ANNIE PALOVCIK

My German friend was celebrating her birthday on July 1, 2014, as well as her fi rst visit to Canada.

I wanted something special. We call her the Swan Lady because she sings an aria to the swans across the lake where she lives in Fürstenberg to bring them to her.

Jennifer Shaw (of Fernwood Road Café) listened to my story and created the above delicacy. She sculpted the exquisite swan from icing sugar, put it on a blue lake (of gel) and encircled it with green grasses and little fl owers, along with a banner that said “Happy Birthday Marie-Luise.”

Marie-Luise was so delighted she sang part of the aria for us.

Thank you, Jennifer, for your creativity. And, the incredible tangy lemon and poppyseed cake inside the decorations did not go unnoticed at the dinner party, where we all had seconds.

An ordinary or even upsetting day can quickly change if you happen to be at the Uptown Pharmasave and get Wendy Duke as your cashier. She’s bound to put a smile on your face before you leave, whether it’s from the liberal pepperings of “Honey” and “Sweetheart” or just her sunny disposition.

The secret of Wendy’s great customer service is, according to her, not her own accomplishment but the combined factors of a supportive community, great employers, a fantastic work team and the customers themselves. Improbably,

Best person to brighten your

day

she says she’s never had a miserable one yet. She likes everyone regardless of their position in life or the amount of dollars in their pockets, and is especially fond of “feisty”

seniors.“I sincerely love them,” she said about the pharmacy clientele.

“My belief is you should not be in customer service unless you sincerely like people.”

“And I like to hire friendly people that like people,” she added. “It’s like I get paid to

have fun.”Wendy credits Pharmasave

owners Gary Utter and Linda Ramsey, fi rst of all, for letting her be

herself on the job — even though she warned them when they were hiring her 13 years ago that she can be a bit of an oddball. She also feels the staff members and the work environment create the right conditions to be

both happy and effective.“I always say, the day I can do this alone

24/7, then you can call me a hot shot.”As for Wendy’s liberal use of endearments,

that’s completely heartfelt.“You talk to people the way you like to be

spoken to. What makes you feel good, that’s what you give back to the customers,” she said.

“I think they know I mean it. It’s not just words to me.”

Like anyone, Wendy has had her sorrows, and has found healing through the support of the island community where she has lived for 40 years. Her innate positivity is no doubt helping a lot of others get through their own troubles, or at least adding a few rays of sunshine during the day.

“You know, you only have one chance to go around, so you might as well be as happy as you can, and laugh your way through life,” she said.

Wendy Duke.

GLAZIER JOB on Salt Spring Island

THE ISLAND'S ONLY INTERPROVINCIAL JOURNEYMEN GLAZIERS

• custom sunrooms• mirrors & shower doors• custom skylights • auto glass• aluminum fabrication • residential & commercial

Even when living in paradise, islanders feel the need to get away once in a while, and most of us don’t have oceanfront properties.

For those who like camping, Ruckle Park campground therefore makes for the ideal vacation without having to take a ferry. The drive to the island’s southern extremes makes it feel like you’re going somewhere far away, especially if you’re coming from the north end. Once there, passing through gates that are closed overnight cements the fact that you are in a separate territory.

It’s not just distance travelled that makes Ruckle so ideal, however. The campground received high marks for maintenance and cleanliness on a recent user survey, and the views over Swanson Channel out to Pender, Portland and Morseby islands can’t be beat. Harbour seals and sea lions can often be seen in the nearby waters, and orcas and porpoises have been known to pass by close to the shore.

The provincial park surrounding the campground has many hiking trails and ocean bays to discover. Nearby Grandmother’s Beach is

an especially lovely discovery for islanders who usually stick to the main access points. There’s also an excellent farm stand on the on-site heritage farm stocked with vegetables, meat and herbs, which could become a gourmet camping feast for those inclined. Lemonade and cookies provide an easy and delicious on-the-spot snack.

And for those who like to play tourist in their own town, a morning drive out for coffee at nearby kiZmit Café or as far away as Fulford village can feel quaint and idyllic.

THE

Having led the winning team in a June fi shing derby sponsored by Moby’s Pub, Kurt Irwin knows a thing or two about getting a bite.

The winning fi sh, a spectacular marbled spring salmon that weighed in at 9.4 kilograms (20 pounds, 12 ounces), was reeled in by Jim Witherspoon near Active Pass.

But catching the big one isn’t always as easy as fi nding that special spot and waiting.

“I try a little of everything,” said Irwin, the owner of Saltspring Reel Action Fishing Charters and Irwin Collision.

When Irwin heads onto the water, he moves around a lot; he fi shes the tides and experiments with different depths.

“Watch what others are doing and be fl exible,” he said. “Don’t stay in one place unless everyone around you is catching fi sh.”

After a slower than usual start to the season, sockeye are coming on strong, he said. If things continue the way they have, winter will also shape up well for pink salmon.

It always helps to look at a chart of the area you plan to visit, Irwin added.

As much as the map can point you where to go, it steers you clear of restricted zones like rockfi sh conservation areas that are sprinkled across the southern Gulf Islands.

The surest way to end up with an empty rod, however, is to have a breakdown on the way. Irwin is continually amazed by the number of boaters who experience mechanical issues out on the water.

Once you’re out there, a stall can ruin a perfectly fi ne day of fi shing.

Irwin advises boaters to try out their equipment before they travel further afi eld.

Most important, however, is to set a course and just enjoy the water.

We live on an island, Irwin said, so getting out in a boat for some “reel action” is a natural fi t.

Best way to big oneland the

Best historical fi nd in a garage

THE

John Sutherland’s grandson Scott Johnston displays sign.

Maria Mahoi, Russell Island pioneer.

Vesuvius resident John Sutherland located a little piece of Salt Spring history in the family garage during a recent cleaning session: a hand-painted sign for ferry rates at Long Harbour terminal. Sutherland fi gures it’s the handiwork of the home’s previous resident, BC Ferries sign-maker Cyril Saunders, from whom he purchased the house on Bayview Road in 1987.

Route 9, serving the Gulf Islands, and the Long Harbour ferry terminal and Queen of the Islands ship were all launched as part of one new service program in 1963.

Modern island residents can only dream of the days when a mid-week trip to Vancouver cost $6 in total for car and driver with resident pass, and a trip to one of the other southern Gulf Islands came in at $1.75.

We could not determine when the sign was painted. Do any of our readers remember seeing this sign or know at what point in history the fares applied?

Sometimes a trip through time is only a short paddle away.

About 20 minutes from Salt Spring’s south end by canoe or kayak is Russell Island in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.

The island features white shell beaches, a small dock and the former home of Maria Mahoi, a pioneer woman of Hawaiian origin who lived there with her family from 1902 until 1960.

Mahoi’s descendants are on site in July and August as part of a volunteer host program implemented by Parks Canada in 2009. The hosts

teach visitors about the island’s history and can offer short tours of the original homestead, which includes a unique water tower, sweet-tasting blackberry patch and a great front porch from which to take in the stunning shoreline setting.

The island features a short trail that connects the homestead to scenic rocky bluffs and several pristine beaches. Russell is especially popular with boaters from Vancouver Island during sunny summer weekends.

Don’t forget to pack all your ingredients for a memorable sunset picnic, though; other than an outhouse, Russell Island has no services.

YOUR PROPERTY WILL EVER LOOK

on Salt Spring Island

Lots of Salt Spring properties have “issues” with water and drainage, including the one owned by Rasma Bertz and Ari Meyers on Old Scott Road.

But not many are lucky enough to have a problem created by a concrete mis-pour so beautifully fi xed.

Outside one door where a puddle had formed is now a stunning bas relief maple leaf, with a drain hole in the middle.

Bertz credits contractor Chris Budd with coming up with and executing the idea, which had extra signifi cance because of Bertz’ special feelings about maple trees.

“I love maple trees. We have a big maple tree that I refused to cut down when we built our house.”

Not only that, but when Bertz was a child she loved to catch maple leaves as they whirled by in the wind, believing, as her mother told her, that it was good luck to catch one.

Salt Spring Island may be lacking when it comes to sandy beaches, but it’s a great place to become an amateur rockhound.

There are many pebbles and stones to delight the eye, but perhaps the most satisfying is fi nding rocks that are native to the area and can’t be found almost anywhere else. Salt Spring is home to a green- and grey-fl ecked rock called dallasite, named after Dallas Road in Victoria, deep green fl ower porphyry, red jasper and luminous pink rhodonite.

According to one of the island’s most devoted rockhounds, Bill Fedoriuk, the best place to fi nd the fi rst two examples is pretty much any beach on Salt Spring. Local stones play a prominent place in his Hawk and Owl Custom Jewelry business, with his polished beach fi nds taking centre stage in modern Art Noveau settings.

“Both Dallasite and fl ower rock are Wrangellian volcanics and are a part of the massive continental plate that is colliding with the rest of North America. Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii and the Aleutian Islands are merely the ‘tips of the iceberg’ of the huge Wrangellian Plate that has been drifting northward for millions of years,” Fedoriuk explains on his website. “Salt Spring Island is located pretty much right in the middle of this collision and as a result we have a very diverse and interesting local geology here.”

For novice searchers, Fedoriuk suggests picking up a copy of Vancouver Island Fossils by Graham Beard (usually available at Salt Spring Books). Looking for fl ower rock is a good place to start.

“They’re kind of hard to miss. They’re basically just a rock with fl owers in it,” he said, noting the blossoms are actually feldspar crystals formed in cooling volcanic basalt.

Fedoriuk has also had good luck at locating Cretaceous-era fossils on island. These can be found everywhere from Cusheon Cove to the Cranberry Valley, and particularly in the rock formation that stretches from Mount Maxwell to Baker Beach.

THE Few could have predicted the rise of Twitter.

When launched in 2006, the social media tool promised to keep people connected and informed with bursts of information no longer than 140 characters each.

Critics scoffed and linguists roiled, but Twitter has taken over.

As of July 11, there were more than 645 million Twitter users on the planet, with approximately 135,000 new subscribers every day. Fifty-eight million tweets are shot through the twittersphere every day.

Salt Spring has proven no exception to the Twitter frenzy. Besides the Gulf Islands Driftwood (@GIDriftwood) and some of its staff, the tool has been adopted by many island businesses, community groups, government bodies and individuals.

Best arbutus tree

THE

Nothing says “Gulf Islands” like the beautiful arbutus tree (Arbutus menziesii). A broadleaf evergreen, arbutus trees are the queens of irregularity, with often curving trunks and an explosion of branches and leaves forming their crown.

In summertime its thin bark curls up and blows away, exposing temporarily bright-green trunks and branches. The tree’s white fl owers are pungent in spring, and ripe orange berries thrill birds such as American robins, the varied thrush and cedar waxwings in fall.

Its range extends from approximately the southern half of Vancouver Island, and along the mainland coast to about Santa Barbara County.

We asked islanders to submit their photos of some of Salt Spring’s “best” arbutus trees, and the images came from Ruckle Park, Walker’s Hook Road, Fernwood and the Tsawout reserve on the island’s south end.

From top: Roy Howarth’s photo of an arbutus at the native reserve, Dawn Lane’s image from Ruckle Park and Sam Keating’s photo of the tree across the street from Fernwood Dock. The lower half of the page is from a Walker’s Hook Road tree photographed by John McNab.

Island Comfort Quilts has held an annual community quilting bee each spring for the last 10 years.

The event sees some 150 volunteers of all ages gather at the Farmers’ Institute to help with pinning, tying, sewing, quilting, ironing and feeding the volunteers. The purpose? To create quilts and carrying bags that are given to individuals on Salt Spring Island who are dealing with the challenges of a life-threatening illness or injury.

The cost of the quilt is covered by donations of cash and fabric.

In 2014: • 37 quilts and 30 bags were made.

• Donations from Salt Spring Lions,

Admiral Lodge 170, Country Grocer,

Thrifty Foods, Salt Spring Singers,

The view from Mount Erskine’s summit is among the best on the island.

For anyone in search of a heart-thumping workout, Wiltzen said, the “assault route” is defi nitely the trail of choice. The well-marked path leaves a small parking pullout about halfway down Collins Road. The hike, which is approximately 2.5 kilometres (one way), is a popular trip at any time of year. Plan to take at least one hour to reach the rocky summit.

Those who prefer a gentler approach will be happy to know there’s an easier alternative.

“Trustees Trail from the top of Juniper Place is the best way if you’re not feeling like that kind of heart-starting experience is what you’re after and want to meander more slowly and fl atly,” Wiltzen said.

More information about PARC’s trail network is available during regular business hours at the Portlock Park offi ce or the Visitor Information Centre in Ganges.

PARC can also be reached at 250-537-4448.

Rob Wiltzen knows a thing or two about the trails of Salt Spring.

As chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission’s advisory group responsible for trail development, Wiltzen has walked many of PARC’s 70 offi cial trails.

Salt Spring trails trace the island’s shoreline, travel through forests of Douglas fi r, cedar and arbutus, and climb to some spectacular

viewpoints.Among the best are the

paths that make their way to the 410-metre (1,345-foot) summit of Mount Erskine. Views from the summit extend across Sansum Narrows and Stuart Channel towards the Cowichan Valley and neighbouring Gulf Islands like Kuper, Thetis and Valdes.

The best way to get to the top of any mountain really depends on how you prefer to reach the summit, since there’s usually always a harder path.

THE BEST WAY TO GET TO THE TOP OF ANY MOUNTAIN REALLY DEPENDS ON HOW YOU PREFER TO REACH THE SUMMIT, SINCE THERE’S USUALLY ALWAYS A HARDER PATH.

Stowel Lake Farm’s outdoor sales area is a beautifully designed structure with a living green roof.

North End Farm is another location with

traditional rustic appeal, good parking and a wide range of items, including frozen meat, berries, fresh veggies and wool products found in a barn setting. Dailly family members who might be around are also friendly and welcoming.

You don’t have to go big to be great, however. Mt. Maxwell Coffee’s tiny roadside stand offers just one delicious product with its bags of roasted beans.

Farm stands on the island typically offer something for everyone, and we love each and every one of them for just existing in the fi rst place, with their quaint honour boxes and commitment to local food production.

A few examples provide extra-special features when it comes to design. The newly rebuilt stand at Ruckle Park gets points both for its variety of products (ranging from fresh snacks to dried herbs along with fresh

veggies and meats) and display. Bonus points go for picnic table seating that cyclists often take advantage of during a nice break from the grind.

The new cob building at Golden Tree Farm on North End Road is uniquely solid and ornate, with Mexican tiles set into the terra cotta coloured walls.

Ambledale Farm on Beaver Point Road gets tops marks for its bright and clean display esthetics; Indigo Farm on Rainbow Road offers an entire yurt-like structure so shoppers can get out of the sun; and old school enthusiasts can’t get enough of the stolid historic charm of Bon Acres Farm at

PLACE TO CALL when buying or selling a home

Salt Spring is home to several rare species of wildfl owers that are deserving of protection. Most of these are found in sensitive ecosystems and

are extremely vulnerable, so offering tips on how to see them may not be the best idea. For example, there are perhaps only 100 phantom orchid plants in all of B.C.

According to Salt Spring Conservancy staff biologist Laura Matthias, there are several things people can do to protect these rare wonders if they do come across them. First and most importantly: “Don’t pick them!” Flowers need to bloom and go to seed so that more plants will germinate in years to come.

Wildfl owers can have roles to play in the ecosystem that make them far more signifi cant than having intrinsic beauty.

“Some rare fl owers, such as the endangered yellow montane violet, are important as egg-laying sources for the rare Zerene Fritillary butterfl y, which depends on violets for continued breeding success,” Matthias explains.

Others, like western trillium (protected by provincial law) may fl ower only once every 15 years.

Islanders help rare species thrive by planting native wildfl owers in yards to increase biodiversity and food sources for insects and birds. They can also consider putting a conservation covenant on their property to protect important ecological features and wildlife habitat into the future, Matthias said.

Arthur Black knows a thing or two about island life.

Salt Spring inspires many of the broadcaster/author’s syndicated columns, not to mention his regular CBC radio spot called Planet Salt Spring, which airs on the All Points West program.

Based on his thorough research of the matter, there’s no better time to convince people you’re a bonafi de islander than during the all-important fi rst impression.

It’s something he calls the 40-second hug.

The highly choreographed maneuver, he said, requires the instigator to step forward into as much of their target’s personal

space as is physically possible. Once the subject is within your

grasp, plant your chin on their right shoulder and hold it there for 15 seconds. Once you’ve transferred to the left side for another 15 seconds, pull your head back slightly and hold on for a fi nal 10 seconds, just to show how much you really care.

But be careful, Black warns: you’re taking your chances when the technique is attempted with some off-islanders, especially visitors from Alberta.

“It doesn’t work on everyone,” he said.

Should you prefer to limit or avoid human contact, the focus shifts to your vehicle.

Don’t be afraid to dress it up, Black advises.

Swirling mandalas and a DayGlo paint job are a great start, but nothing can top the natural look.

To that end, a cedar branch fi rmly planted into the car’s hood, trunk of window frame is always preferred, but arbutus will suffi ce in a pinch, he said.

The key when it comes to branch placement, Black confi des, is purpose and intent.

A vertical branch extending proudly into the highway breeze is always preferred to a random array of branches.

“You don’t want it to look like you were in a car accident,” he said.

From 1991 to 2008, Salt Spring Island tennis players used “the bubble” at Portlock Park to play under in winter months.

When the bubble began showing wear in the early 2000s, Salt Spring Tennis Association members tried working with the Parks and Recreation Commission to get a new indoor facility placed at Portlock Park. After that project failed to materialize after a number of years of trying, the SSTA turned to a partnership with the Salt Spring Golf and Country Club to build Centre Court on that club’s land.

For the past two years, tennis players of all ages have been enjoying this fantastic place to practise their serve and other skills of the sport.

Roy Rajsic: For the several hundred tennis players

on the island and tennis-playing visitors, the new Centre Court indoor tennis facility is one of the best things ever.

The island has become the envy of the B.C. tennis community for the new court provided for public use by the volunteer efforts of Salt Spring Tennis Association members. The wonderful court surface and the perfect indoor conditions, coupled with the clinics and lessons given by Peter Schelling and Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame member Marjorie Blackwood have vaulted the island into a whole new level of tennis fun!

Justene tedder:It is state of the art and wonderful to

have on the island. We can play all year round now in a fabulous building!

Margaret Benmore: Centre Court is available to everyone

in the community . . . with lots of lessons, tournaments, club activities all year round now.

Centre Court is amazing and the tennis community on Salt Spring is very welcoming. Come on out and play, learn and have lots of fun at this truly remarkable Salt Spring facility.

The idea of catching a train in Ganges and alighting in Fulford may sound romantic and exciting, but that old rumour about the Trans Salt Spring Railroad has never picked up quite enough steam.

The result leaves limited options for rail fans on the rock.

Best way to ride the rails

But don’t despair, since anyone who wishes to hop aboard some of England’s most historic trains need not cross the Atlantic, or even the Strait of Georgia.

For nearly a decade, Philip Benson has laid a railroad empire through the cedars and around the sheep paddocks of his Twinfl ower Road property.

Bridges, farms and villages have tunnelled into Benson’s garden from the backyard shed, which houses the HO-scale model railroad’s control room and staging area.

The shed features a television screen that gives whoever is behind the controls an

engineer’s perspective.Visitors must obey the rail signals and listen for the

whistles as they drive their train out of the historic Yorkshire terminus. Candidates receive a certifi cate of participation and an invitation for railroad-inspired refreshments in the garden.

Benson’s model railway is open Mondays through Saturdays in summer months from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment at all other times.

Physical space isn’t the only thing that’s increased since the Salt Spring Public Library moved into its beautiful new building in December 2012. The number and types of resources in its collection have expanded to match, with more items on site and a wealth of new electronic databases.

One of the best surprises has been the Program Room, a smallish but inviting space that is well used by the library and any number of public groups. Although the library has always provided children’s programs such as Friday reading groups and Toddler Time, the Program Room has opened the door to an entirely new world.

“We never had space for adult programming before, [but] last year we had more than 2,000 people attend 58 programs,” reports chief librarian Karen Hudson.

These have included author readings, a library-sponsored book club, chess and scrabble clubs and the Tech Cafe program, among other examples.

“It’s a real hub for people just to come, learn different things of all sorts, and just be with other people,” Hudson says of the library in general.

New youth programs have also been very successful, such as a conjuring club, a book club and writing workshops. In addition, teens have not been shy to take advantage of the library rental policy, which allows them to use rooms for studying free of charge — something that was particularly useful during the recent strike action.

The already popular children’s programming expanded by 367 per cent in 2013, with increased resources and

events and the expansion of Toddler Time through the summer months.

A website overhaul and investment in new online databases means library users now have access to consumer reports, can learn 25 different languages for free, and can support their children’s literacy through TumbleBooks, a collection of animated, talking picture books.

“It’s amazing the things that program alone can do. It’s a great way to get children excited about reading,” Hudson says.

The adult collection has improved as well, with more availability of both e-books and the good old-fashioned kind. As soon as any work of fi ction has received fi ve holds, the system automatically orders another copy for the shelf. Five holds on an e-book will result in the purchase of a Salt Spring-only copy that is off-limits to the greater library system.

The traditional forms of reference materials are also changing, with increasing online access meaning much more fl exibility. Now users can download books onto their own computer devices and take them with them, instead of having to read them in the library only.

One thing that hasn’t changed at the library is the wealth of human resources. The space is still driven by a huge number of friendly volunteers in addition to its two staff librarians.
