In its planning application, Holloway Property Developments describes the block, pictured left, as ‘low quality, poorly maintained and outdated’, and sets out its plans to replace it with 11family homes and five separate garages, with a flat above, along with shared garden space. Plans for 48sheltered apartments on the 1.2-acre site were drawn up in 2014, but were withdrawn in January amid strongopposition. Book tellsMyton tale

Mr Hunter recruited hisfriend and accomplishedlocal author, Michael Jeffs, who has now penned TheMyton Hospice: The First35 Years.

Many records and detailsof events in the history ofMyton were missing or nolonger accessible, butMichael — who has previ-ously written four booksthat focus on variousaspects of Warwickshire’shistory — had a helpinghand from plenty of peoplealong the way inresearching and writing thebook to mark the charity’s35th birthday.

The book tells how, although Myton’s first hos-pice, in Warwick opened in1982, the campaign to fundthe project was launched in1979. By June 1982 over£500,000 had been raisedby the founding trusteesand dedicated fundraisers.

The Myton Hamlet site, which trustees had ear-marked to become their

hospice, was originallybuilt in 1938 to be a chil-dren’s home and was occu-pied for 40 years.

Mr Hunter said: “Itwould be a tragedy if ourearly history was lost andthere is, as I discovered, much inspiration that canbe drawn from those whoturned a dream into areality. The people whofounded Myton took a realrisk on it, if those peoplehadn’t put the effort in andtaken the chance Mytonwould never have hap-pened. If we didn’t writeabout Myton’s history now, some things could havebeen forgotten.”

Mrs Jeffs added: “A lackof records meant gettingsome of the informationwas hard, but I think we’vetracked the last 35 yearswell though.”

The book is available tobuy from each of Myton’sthree hospices, as well asits charity shops across thecounty.

THE idea of documenting the first 35 years ofThe Myton Hospices started with a conversationin June 2016 between the chair of trustees, NoelHunter, and Mike Cotton, who has beeninvolved with the charity since its inception —and the rest, as they say, is history.

HOUSEHOLDERS with solar panels on their homes arebeing targeted by bogus companies falsely claiming thatadditional components are needed to improve safety orefficiency.

One Warwickshire resident paid over £4,000 for a‘magic box’ that was meant to improve the efficiency ofhis solar-powered water heating device.

Instead his solar panels ended up giving out heat fromhis boiler to the outside air.

Another resident is said to have paid over £30,000after being contacted on a dating website by someoneshe thought was in the American Army, who convincedher to send money to an account in Turkey in order tosupport her ‘new partner’s’ imminent retirement. Thefraudsters even sent bogus photographs and regularlyspoke to the victim over the phone.

Scammers are also targeting residents with large sav-ings and those who have ‘unlocked’ their pensions, withbogus investment opportunities, and one Warwickshireresident who was convinced to ‘invest’ in pink dia-monds from the world’s last pink diamond mine. It isbelieved that he may have sent over £50,000 to fraud-sters who contacted him over the phone.

These scams are being highighted by WarwickshireCounty Council’s Trading Standards Service.

Cllr Howard Roberts, portfolio holder for communitysafety, said: “Most of us will have been targeted by afraudster at one time or another, over the phone, on theinternet, through the post and even occasionally at thedoor. Recognising a scam is our best defence againstscammers and fraudsters. Our goal is to raise awarenessof scams, how to spot them and how to protect peoplefrom falling victim to them.”

Historic land to be sold for hotel?FURTHER discussions overthe future of St Mary’s Lands inWarwick will take placetomorrow, Wednesday, as pro-posals for a hotel on the historicsite gather pace.

Warwick Town Council is to meetas Warwick District Council hasrevealed it could sell off part of thesite to push through the hotel plans.

Currently, a 1984 Act of Parlia-ment protects the 150-acre site andwhile there is nothing in the act thatprevents a change of use of any partof the site, it does not allow for aracecourse operating lease to be anymore than 21 years.

And so the district council has saidit will consider selling the land out-right to the Jockey Club, which runsWarwick Racecourse, to overcomethat obstacle — a move that has beenmet with outrage by the Friends of StMary’s Lands.

A report to the recent WDC cab-inet meeting said: “Although theterms on which it may grant Race-course Leases are restricted, section8 of the Act expressly records thatthe district council has the samepowers to sell and change the use ofSt Mary’s Lands, including the race-course, as it would with any of itsother landholdings not within thescope of the 1984 Act.

“Accordingly, there is nothing inthe 1984 Act to prevent the districtcouncil accepting a surrender fromthe Jockey Club of part of the landwithin the current Racecourse Leaseand granting the Jockey Club a freshlease in respect of the land required

for the Hotel. Such a lease would notbe a Racecourse Lease within themeaning of the 1984 Act and accord-ingly would not be caught by the 21year duration limit.

“The district council could, if itwas considered commercially pru-dent and appropriate, grant a lease ofany duration for hotel purposes e.g.99 years.

“The district council wouldequally have the power to make anoutright sale of the land to the JockeyClub for hotel purpose if that wasjudged to be the most appropriatecourse of action.”

Members of the Friends of StMary’s Lands will be at WarwickTown Council’s meeting onWednesday night when councillorswill discuss the issue.

Linda Bromley, secretary of theFriends, said: “Warwick Commonhas always been held in deep affec-tion by generation after generation ofWarwick families.

“In the past, huge outcries haveopposed any plans to ‘develop’ it,ultimately resulting in an Act of Par-liament on the land.

“A previous application for a hotelwas opposed by a 1,200 signaturepetition.

“Warwick people consider thatthese lands morally belong to themand Warwick District Council aresimply the custodians.

“Is it wise to sell public land andrisk widespread condemnation, espe-

cially with a local election only 18months away?”

The Midweek reported back inJune how a feasibility study commis-sioned by the district council indi-cated there was a gap in the marketfor an 80- to 100-bedroom hotel withcar parking, and that it would notimpact exiting hotels in and aroundthe town.

Consultants, GL Hearn withBridget Baker Consulting, also saidit would create up to 80 jobs andpump around £3million a year intothe local economy.

The same consultants will nowdraw up more detailed reports thatwill be taken to potential operators.

St Mary’s Lands comprises some150 acres of open space located onthe western edge of Warwick.

A masterplan designed to protect ithas been drawn up over the past twoyears by a group that includes theCorp of Drums, Friends of St Mary’sLands, Golf Centre, Hill Close Gar-dens, Warwick Race Course, RacingClub Warwick Football Club, War-wick Town Council, WarwickshireCounty Council and the WarwickSociety.

But at their recent meeting theFriends voted unanimously againstthe proposals for a hotel, additionalparking, changing the name, andchanges to the cycle route.

The hotel proposals will be dis-cussed at a Warwick Town Councilmeeting tomorrow, Wednesday, at6.30pm, in the Court House Ball-room, Jury Street, Warwick.

The Friends said anyone interestedin its future should attend in protestand to ask questions.

Masons Road, Stratford-upon-Avon

are proud to be the main Sponsors of Stratford Town Football Club 2017/2018 SeasonNext home game - Saturday 23rd September - Gosport Borough - League - 3.00pm kick off

‘We were blownaway’ — AdamsSTRATFORD Town will look tobounce back tonight, Tuesday, afterlosing their unbeaten record.

Boss Carl Adams suggests King’sLynn Town will be among the SouthernPremier title contenders after his sidewere swept away 4-1 in East Anglia onSaturday.

It was their first defeat in sevenleague and cup matches but they willface another likely highflier tonightwhen they visit ninth-placed Herefordfor the first time.

Adams was realistic after the clash atthe Linnets, who took control from theoff and led 3-0 at half-time before BenStephens pulled a goal back from thepenalty spot.

“We were blown away by the bestside we’ve faced this season,” saidAdams.

“They will surely be right up there asgenuine title contenders for the rest ofthe campaign. King’s Lynn are a bigclub with a playing budget to match, and they showed their quality all after-noon.

“Now we face another big club on

Tuesday when we travel to Hereford.”On Saturday, the Linnets went ahead

in the 25th minute when Mike Clunanfree-kick was met with a bullet headerat the far post by Mike Gash.

It was 2-0 on 37 minutes whenCameron Norman was brought down ayard inside the penalty area by LeeThomas and Clunan blasted the spotkick past Connor. And it got worse forStratford in added time at the end of thefirst half when Gash’s cross was turnedin by Leon Mettam from ten yards out.

Stratford were given a glimmer ofhope in the 68th minute when JazzLuckie was floored by Ryan Fryatt andsubstitute Ben Stephens sent keeperAlex Street the wrong way from thespot. But ten minutes later Gash crossedfrom the left and Mettam fired home hissecond and the Linnets’ fourth.

On Saturday, Town will be looking tocreate club history in the FA Cup.

They entertain league rivals RedditchUnited at the MoodChimp Stadium, knowing victory would equal their best-ever run by taking them into the thirdqualifying round.

Stratford bounced back from their opening-day drubbing with a rousing and thrilling 29-27 victory againstWantage-based Grove at Pearcecroft on Saturday, more in Thursday’s Herald. Photo: Mark Williamson (R38/9/17/0841)
