To Prezi and Beyond
PowerPoint and PowerPoint Alternatives
The best example I have: http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=108629
Slides from Nine Engl 1001 Students
I asked them to create a PowerPoint slide including an editorial cartoon along with commentary. Then I asked them to attach their slides to an email and send them to me.

Not an assignment all found effortless
• One had never used PowerPoint before• Three needed help inserting image onto slide• All but one used a PowerPoint provided template
(or no template)• Two did not initially send me the slide correctly
as an attachment (sent as .jpg rather than .ppt)• Most included much too much text on the slide
or used a font that was too small to read• One unintentionally distorted his image
Warnings• Some of the software I describe will be difficult or time
consuming for the average person to install• Xerte—requires Xammp—similar to Moodle in time and effort
involved
• As I downloaded free software to prepare for this presentation, despite my best efforts, my search engine was hijacked four times
• Three times to Yahoo (easy to fix)• Once to Conduit (had to run Malwarebytes)
• Before downloading any software, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the source, Google it first.
• Softonic (promised me the defunct Microsoft Producer, offered malware)
Things that Didn’t Work • A lot of very cool-sounding software no longer exists
• Microsoft Producer• SlideRocket (merged with ClearSlide—free trial)• 280 Slides (as free Chrome app)• Screenr (did not recognize that I had Java)• Jing Pro (gone—only free version remains; up to five minutes
screencast)
PowerPoint Add-Ins
If you love it but want it to be better
PowerPoint Add Ins• Office add-ins add extra features or custom commands
to Office programs, including PowerPoint.• Easy to install and manage.• They’ll only work on the computer you installed it on.• Many are free.• Many are aimed at the business user.• Need templates? Microsoft Office’s download site can
help:• http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/
Office Tabs• http://office-tabs.com/download.htm• adds a tabbed view to Office 2010 and earlier Office
documents, including PowerPoint, making it easy to have multiple presentations open at the same time.
• Only works with Office 2010 and earlier; otherwise, there’s a paid option.
Four Presentations open at once
VisualBee• http://www.visualbee.com/ • Everyone should try this once: will automatically turn
PowerPoint presentations “into something more stylish and presentable in just a couple of clicks.”
• Works with PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 (not 2013) and comes with a large collection of free templates and images.
• I got the free version; for $39 / year, you can get the version without the required VisualBee logo.
• Will try to install some software that you probably don’t want—be careful.
WORDSMITH: A GUIDE TO COLLEGE WRITING5th Edition

CHAPTER 16: RUN-ON SENTENCES
Copyright ©2012 Pearson Education, Inc.
PowerPoint presentation by Dr. Kathryn Lane, Northwestern Oklahoma State University
Learning Objective:
Identify and correct run-on sentences.
Run-on sentence
A run-on sentence occurs when two or more sentences run together without proper punctuation.
Why is this sentence a run-on?The two independent clauses in this run-on are “The sun is shining brightly today” and “I should wear a hat when I go outside.” They could each create their own sentence but because the ideas are related, they work best when they’re working together.
The sun is shining brightly today I should wear a hat when I go outside.

Oomfo for Charts and Graphs• http://oomfo.com/• Oomfo walks you through the process of creating
charts, step-by-step. • Easily connect to Excel or live data sources like
SalesForce, Google Docs, Google Analytics, Twitter Analytics.
• I found working with PowerPoint’s charts & graphs tools easy enough that I didn’t really think this was necessary. However, I do teach English.
When I asked my students to create a chart in PowerPoint, only one was able to create a chart including trendlines like this one. It’s much easier using Oomfo.
Cacoo (diagramming or flow charts)
• http://cacoo.com• Easy and friendly. This does what I bought SmartDraw
for (creating flow charts easily), for free. Then export into PowerPoint.
Office Timeline• http://officetimeline.com• Works with PowerPoint 2007/2010/2013• The paid version ($39 / year) allows you to import data
directly from Excel and for much more customization
PptPlex• http://
www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28558
• “Turn PowerPoint into Prezi.”• From Microsoft Labs. Developed in 2011 and no
longer being maintained or updated.• Helps make PowerPoint seem a little more nonlinear.• Lets you group slides into sections and then zoom in
and out of the slides and scroll around from section to section in any direction.
Video Wizard (plus automatic rewind)
You don’t need special software to embed a YouTube video—or to create any of the effects I’ve shown in the previous slides, but you or your students might find it easier.
Options for those without PowerPoint
If your school does not offer students inexpensive access to Microsoft Office or if you embrace Open Source software
Open Office Impress• Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org

Open Office Extensions
Google Docs Presentation Software
• https://accounts.google.com• Just click on the Create new drop down menu and
select Presentation to get started.• real-time and access to documents by anyone with a
Google account• Useful for multiple users of the same document• Foolproof backups; no problem with missing flash
drives• View on mobile
Google Docs Presentation Software
Beyond PowerPoint
If you dislike the limitations of slides
Slidego—A Free Chrome App• First, install Chrome Browser, and then get the free App from
Web Store at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/apps
• You get full control of how fast or slow you want to run the animation.
• You can minimize the effect of moving from one slide to the next.
• Example: http://www.slidego.com/view/slide.php?f=5&s=1&title=Circle+Area+Proof&sid=mdaiu3k5mqf23kk0vku5us1ke7
Prezi• http://prezi.com
• Less linear than PowerPoint• Easier for viewer to skip or review certain segments• Very easy to embed video
• http://prezi.com/uh_7jvp0ykpf/great-jazz-bassists-and-their-influence-through-the-ages/
• http://www.prezzip.com/index.php/footer-pages/products/best-prezis/
Another Way to Zoom• http://www.microsoft.com/web/solutions/zoomit.aspx
• For Some Examples: http://www.microsoft.com/web/solutions/zoomit.aspx
Jing• http://www.techsmith.com/download/jing/
• For screenshots or screenshot videos with audio—good for instruction on computer usage
• Videos up to five minutes long (they have a paid tool called SnagIt if you want longer)
• Crashed a lot on my five-year-old computer; no problem on new one
• The example I have here is Take #13—and it’s still not wonderful, as you can see. This Jing screenshot video explains how to embed a YouTube video in PowerPoint
• Can download or save in the Cloud
• http://screencast.com/t/RKoMsws9i
Brainshark• http
://www.brainshark.com/try-it-for-free.aspx?ref=topbtn
• Also allows the user to add audio to presentations and save them online.
• Marketed toward business users.• A competitor of SlideShare• Example:
http://my.brainshark.com/Cheating-Death-by-PowerPoint-Analyze-and-Synthesize-738618804
SlideSharkhttp://www.brainshark.com/solutions/products/slideshark.aspx?ref=footnav
“The leading app for showing PowerPoint® from the iPad ... Individuals and businesses use SlideShark to better engage with live audiences and maintain control over their most critical content.
“SlideShark gives you the flexibility to confidently communicate your messages no matter what the situation might be. You can show your slides from your iPad, or connect to a projector to present to larger audiences. After the meeting you can even share an online version of your slides and use analytics to track your audience's viewing behavior.”
Professional users can sell their presentations online, setting their own prices.
Let Someone Else Do Some of the Work
Pinterest• http://pinterest.com/• Collection of images on a single topic. • Many students will already be familiar with Pinterest.• Many people have created outstanding boards on
topics that will interest your students—or you can ask them to do the work.
SlideShare• http://www.slideshare.net/
• Save your PowerPoint presentations to the Cloud• Educators use this a lot!• Freely available PowerPoint presentations
• http://www.slideshare.net/search/slideshow?searchfrom=header&q=toulmin
Do you have slides that look like this?

Symbaloo
• http://symbalooedu.com/ • Visual bookmarking tool, if what you’re linking to is all available on the
Internet.
Glogster
• http://edu.glogster.com/
• Digital posters; like so many of these tools, for some reason used more frequently in schools than in colleges.
• These “glogs” are printable, but it’s probably not worth it without a color printer.
• Your imagination is the limit with these—and sometimes that’s not a good thing!
• http://www.glogster.com/glog/6o8fbn5le80u3nv8g0nnb27• http://s018.calgaryscienceschool.edu.glogster.com/NancyPanel3/
Spicy Nodes• http://www.spicynodes.org/• A concept map presentation tool that allows the users to
link and embed pictures, websites, and more into the overall presentation.
Example: http://www.spicynodes.org/a/e2dd477856992617ac9f0ebaffea5761
Live Binders • http://livebinders.com/• Probably the most in-touch with the needs of my kind of
school (UCBA) of all of these tools. For example, specifically suggests formats for ePortfolios.
• Collect not only links to websites, but also other types of content as well.
• Examples:• http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=108629• http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?present=true&id=
265299
Museum Box• Mhttp://museumbox.e2bn.org/
• This site allows users to place items into virtual boxes; these items can include images, video, text, and sound.
• Mostly used by middle-school and high-school students—hard to find really high quality examples, and that’s too bad!
Example: http://museumbox.e2bn.org/creator/viewer/show/295686
Animoto • http://animoto.com/• Create slide-show videos with music (or other sound) and
share via the internet.• Much more fun than Brainshark because of the emphasis on
music.• Include photos, graphics, or text. Create a video in five
minutes – no kidding! • Make sure to to sign up as an educator.• $30 / year gives you the ability to make 10-minute videos.• Example:
http://animoto.com/play/0TqjYWw081DFWfQA6l2N1w
ChronoZoom
• http://www.chronozoom.com/
• Another timeline tool A way to deal with the problem of much more information than you can fit onto a single screen
• Easier for the user or presenter to choose specific parts of the presentation for increased focus or attention
• ZUI (Zoomable User Interface)• Can scroll around as I might on Google maps• Works with touch screens• http
://www.chronozoom.com/Chile/Chile/#/tc8699ce3-44b8-4741-9bc4-9dbb79fc4935
Do We Even Need Any of This?
• Bblearn.uc.edu
Xerte • http://www.xerte.org.uk/index.php?lang=en• Open Source.• Not easy to install unless you’ve already installed Moodle or similar. The
instructions will guide you through, but the process (with errors on my part) took me about an hour.
• You’ll be asked to provide a UK email address, but if you ask for permission, the Xerte Project people will happily give you access.
• Works even without Flash• Allows “anyone with a web browser to create interactive tools quickly.”• Could be wonderful for online teaching. Connects very easily with Moodle.• Example: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_6391#• http://vle.jisctechdis.ac.uk/xerte/play_477#
