    THE BEGINNING OF REGRET

    FOR DISBELIEVERS

    Kullu nafsin-zaaa-iqatul-mawt; wa nabloukum-bish-sharri wal-khayri

    fitnah. Wa ilaynaa turjaoun.

Everyone has to taste death, and We test you throughbad and good (situations) with a trial, and to Us you are

    to be returned.

    QURAAN 21:35

Presented byHAJI MOHAMAD HANIM MOHAMAD ISA

    DEATH

Death is considered to be an end and a final

destruction by those who do not believe in theHereafter. This is a flawed perception however

because death is not an end but a beginning.

For believers, it is the beginning of a perfect, eternal Paradise that is free from all evil and

flaws. For disbelievers on the other hand, it is

a transition to a life in Hell, where a great

    penalty is suffered.

Those who comprehend this reality live a

pleasant end in the world when deathmeets them and a pleasant beginning inthe Hereafter. These two occursimultaneously. Disbelievers, on the

other hand, encounter the irrecoverableregret of disregarding this reality, ofwhich they had been previously informed. They suffer this regret at every momentfor as long as Allah wills and never findrespite from it.

Although death is not a subject of profound

thought for most people, it is anunavoidable end. That is because Allahcreates death as the definite end of thislife. So far, not a single person hasavoided death. No one's property, wealth, career, or close friends haveprovided salvation from death. Certainly

everyone will meet death. Allah relatesthis fact in many verses in the Qur'an:

    4:781. QURAAN

    .

Ayna maa takounou yud-rik-kumul-mawtu wa law kuntum fee buroujim-mushayyadah. .

"Wherever ye are, death will find you out, even if ye are in towers built up strongand high!..

    62:82. QURAAN

Qulinnal-Mawtallazee tafirrouna minhu fainnahou mulaaqeekum thumma turaddouna ilaaAalimil-gaybi wash-shahaadati fayunabbi-ukum-bimaa kuntum tamaloun.

Say, Indeed, the death from which you (try to) run away has to visit you, thenyou will be sent back to the Knower of the Unseen and the seen, and He will tellyou what you used to do.

    63:113. QURAAN

Wa lany-yuakhkhiraLLaahu nafsan izaa jaaa-a ajaluhaa: WaLLaahu khabee-rum-bimaatamaloun.

But Allah will never give respite to anyone, once his appointed time will come. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

So, does avoiding contemplation over death

and the life after death save one from facingthis reality? Surely the answer to thisquestion is "No". Since man is desperateagainst death, the most rational thing to do

is to constantly contemplate upon death andto get prepared for the hereafter, as theProphet Muhammad (saas) said "Ponder ondeath a lot. Allah opens the heart of that person who

thinks about death a lot and makes death easy for him."(Narrated by Abu Huraira)

Those who neglect thinking about the

Hereafter whilst being distracted by thisfleeting worldly life are taken by surprise bydeath. Those saying "While we are young,we can make the most of our lives and think

about death in the latter years of our lives"grasp that they will never have such anopportunity. That is because death ispredestined by Allah. A person may well die

before he grows old. In this case, solelymaking future plans and postponing thefulfillment of Allah's commands will only leadto dreadful regret.

Those who spend their lives distant from Allah

and who only repent when they realize theyare close to death will experience suchregret. Yet repentance which arises from thefear of death and which doesn't bear sincere

intention to correct and purify one's self maynot be acceptable by Allah. Openly being infavor of this life despite the existence ofdeath, such people desperately strive to

save themselves only when they realizedeath is very near.

This however brings no benefit. Allah knows

their insincerity, because Allah is closer toman than his jugular vein. He knows what isinside of man, including his most innerthoughts and deepest secrets. Allah informs

us in the Qur'an that He will not acceptrepentance based on the fear of death at thevery last moment:

    QURAAN 4:18

Wa laysa-tittaw-batu lillazeena yamalounas-sayyi-aati hattaaa izaahazara ahadahumul-mawtu, qaala innee tubtulaana wa lallazeena ya-moutouna wa hum-kuffaar; ulaaaika a-tadnaa lahum azaaban aleemaa.

Of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do

evil, until death faces one of them, and he says, "Nowhave I repented indeed;" nor of those who die rejecting

Faith: for them have We prepared a punishment most

    grievous.

It is stated in many verses that when anotherchance is granted, these insincere peoplesoon resume their ungrateful attitude:

    6:27QURAAN

Wa law taraaaiz wuqifou alan-Naari faqaalou yaa-laytanaa nuraddu wa laa

nukazziba biAayaati Rabbinaa wa nakouna minal-Mumineen.

If thou couldst but see when they are confronted with the Fire! They willsay: "Would that we were but sent back! Then would we not reject thesigns of our Lord, but would be amongst those who believe!"

    6:28QURAAN

Bal badaa lahum-maa kaanou yukh-founa min qabl. Wa law ruddou laaadou limaa

    nuhouanhu wa innahum la-kaaziboun.

Yea, in their own (eyes) will become manifest what before theyconcealed. But if they were returned, they would certainly relapse to thethings they were forbidden, for they are indeed liars.

For this reason, it would be erroneous to

have a rationale based on the thought "Iwill repent when the appropriate time

    comes."

This kind of thinking will not save one from

the torment in Hell. So if one does notwant to suffer an eternal grievous penaltyafter death, he should live for a purpose, knowing that he will absolutely meetAllah and have to give an account of hisactions.
