BLOSSOM HILL FOOD DRIVE December 6-20, 2017

1 in 10 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties turn to Second Harvest Food Bank for food every single month. The good news is we have the power to make a difference by hosting a Food Drive to help connect local hungry families to the healthy and nutritious food they need to thrive.

Most-Needed Foods The Food Bank accepts all non-perishable food donations, but especially needs these nutritious items:

Meals in a can (soup, stew, chili) Tuna or canned chicken

Peanut butter Canned foods with pop-top lids

Canned fruit in its own juice or water Low-sodium canned vegetables

Olive or canola oil Spices

Low-sugar whole grain cereals Healthy snacks (granola bars, nuts, dried fruit)

*Please avoid items packed in glass. No candy or soda please.

Buzz into the Holiday Season With Some Fun Science Activities!

The application deadline to participate in Blossom Hill's 2018 Science Fair  is January 19, so there's no better time to discuss potential project ideas with your kids than over the upcoming month.

Perhaps you could discuss what they've been studying in class, and riff off of that to generate an idea. Or you could peruse some of the links at the school science fair's web site. NPR's Science Friday program also offers some cool educational STEM activities. The unit on why honeycomb cells are hexagonal, for example, engages students' math and observational skills. The exercise challenges them to figure out why hexagons are the most efficient shape in which to store honey.

If you're going to drive long distances or otherwise travel over the holidays, try downloading the "Wow in the World" podcast from NPR. It's a hilarious, yet educational, podcast on the science of the everyday, and not-so-everyday from the duo Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz. The subjects of recent episodes include the discovery of the Vangunu Rat, a coconut-eating giant rat species in the Solomon Islands, why horses have hooves, and how squirrels remember where they've hidden their nuts. Enjoy!

Also, the science fair committee is looking for candidates to lead the organization of the project in upcoming years. Responsibilities include running efficient meetings, planning the assemblies and family science  night, assigning tasks to committee members and keeping everyone updated, among other things. Please contact [email protected], if you're interested.

FLU SEASON The flu season is quickly approaching. Following a night’s sleep, it may be difficult in the morning to determine whether or not to send your child to school. The following are the guidelines we use. Keep your child home if he or she has:

• A fever of 99.4 or more • Chills • Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, or nausea • Sore throat or difficulty swallowing • Unusually red, watery, itchy or burning eyes  • Says he or she does not feel well

Please keep your child home if he or she is generally not feeling well or is unable to actively participate in school activities. Children must be symptom free, without any medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. As a preventative and protective measure, wash your hands frequently and thoroughly and keep them away from your eyes, mouth and nose. Please, keep your child home if there are signs of illness.

YEARBOOK PICTURES NEEDED Get your pictures in the yearbook! The Yearbook Staff invites you to submit photos for the yearbook. If you've taken great photos of a class field trip, the Harvest Festival, Halloween parade, chorus, classroom parties or any school event, we'd like to see them. Our classroom photographers can't be everywhere. Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have.  Don’t forget to take pictures of your teachers with their students, too!

Here is how you can submit photos online: • Go to: https://images.memoryebooks.com/login • If it does not automatically log you into the site, enter

username: 409083600 • Browse to select the photo(s) you wish to upload. • Enter information about the photo and provide contact

information in case the staff needs additional information. • Click "Save Details".

It's that easy! Submit your photos early!

Thank You!

BOOK FAIR

We would like to thank the Blossom Hill School community for once again making the Hicklebee’s Book Fair a tremendous success! It is because of your generous support that we have such a fantastic selection of books in the library and outstanding literacy programs at Blossom Hill School.

A huge thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped create posters, unload the books from the warehouse, set up, staff and tear down the Book Fair!

A very special thank you to Amy Grespan for allowing us to transform her library into a book store for the week. Lastly, thank you to the Home and School Club for continuing to support book fairs at our school.

Cheers! Chris Schweitzer and Patty Smith, Book Fair Co-Chairs

All Blossom Hill adults are welcome! Please feel free to bring your younger children if you find yourself interested in attending but do not have childcare.
