THE HIVETHURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014 HUTCHBEE.COM PAGE 3

This is one of the bestChristian movies in severalyears. Keep in mind, noteveryone likes “Christian”movies, but for those whodo, “God’s Not Dead” is ex-cellent and deserving of 3½stars. Since the largely secu-lar movie reviewers and ma-jor media who preview andwrite about films seldomgive “Christian” movies thetime of day, let alone athumbs-up, don’t be sur-prised if you don’t read orhear a lot about this film. But the church community, understandably critical ofsex, violence and far-fetchedthemes that regularly comeout of Hollywood, need tosupport this type of film ifthey want more of the posi-tive and less of the negativeon future screens.

Everything that “Noah”isn’t, from a biblical andChristian point of view,“God’s Not Dead” achieves. It’s told with good, believ-able acting, excellent edit-ing, and it combines eightor more stories into onefilm, with numerous sub-plots, in addition to the ba-sic story about a Christiancollege student who chal-lenges his atheist professorby refusing to sign a papersaying “God is Dead” sothat the prof, who has adeep secret why he hasturned against believing, can get on with his philoso-phy classes.

The series of stories istold in a style aimed forteenagers and young collegestudents but is presented ina way that holds interest foradults as well. Worked intothe plots are a popularChristian rock group, News-boys, “Duck Dynasty’s”Willie Robertson and even abrief iPhone appearancefrom Franklin Graham. Notonly is this a good movie forparents and their teens tosee together, but it’s excel-lent for church groups andfollow-up discussions. Thesame can certainly be saidfor the previously reviewed“Noah,” which overall Iliked, but in a much differ-ent kind of way.

As credits roll at the end, there is a lengthy list of col-leges where Christian-asso-ciated legal groups went tocourt against some of thenation’s better-known uni-versities to secure therights of Christian studentsto express their thoughtsand beliefs just as much asthe liberal, often Christ-denying faculty who seemto dominate many schools.Perhaps “God’s Not Dead”drifts a bit too far toward ahappy ending for most ofthe characters, but that isoverridden by the overalltone and inspiration gener-ated by this well-done andworth-seeing film. It’s nowshowing at the Mall 8 The-atre in Hutchinson.

***If you are looking for a

movie long on action butshort on virtually anythingresembling brains, thenMarvel comics’ “CaptainAmerica” could easily beyour cup of tea. The specialeffects, car chase, block-buster battle scenes andclose-to-nonstop fightingand violence crowd willcome away singing itspraises.

The rest of us have to beperplexed, embarrassed andsomewhat disgusted withthe mentality of so many ofour fellow citizens when“Captain America” comesaway as the biggest box-of-fice attraction this pastweek and perhaps on its wayto being one of the largestticket-sellers this year. When the action far out-strips any sense of believ-

ability and the story itself isequally lame-brained, onehas to wonder why so manymillions of people spend twohours and 15 minutes oftheir lives escaping realityand voiding of any humanaccomplishment.

Why a stellar actor likeRobert Redford, who was sobrilliant in holding an audi-ence in the nearly no-dia-logue “All is Lost” movie, would lend his talents to“Captain America” isequally baffling. Flat dis-turbing is why the Min-

neapolis Star Tribune, whose reviews are also tout-ed in The Wichita Eagle, would give this film 3½stars. What have they beendrinking in Minnesota? And why would the nearbyEagle take its word on sucha flimsy, stupid movie without reviewing it themselves?

Chris Evans, portrayingthe powerful, shield-bear-ing “captain”; Scarlett Jo-hansson, who undoubtedlytook her role for a big pay-check; and Samuel L. Jack-

son, who is not a stranger toaction movies, all are credi-ble in their roles. The end-ing certain sets up a sequel, but, please, someone savethe planet from having toagain endure such a wasteof time and talent. Themost disturbing part of“Captain America,” whichat the best rates 1½ stars, was having to see Scarlettas a redhead rather than ablonde. Now, that really isoffensive!

Drinking beer is nothingnew. People have been partak-ing for centuries. Even Mar-tin Luther advocated itsconsumption. Then again, the beer he drank and thesuds available to us todayaren’t exactly the same. Evenhere in Hutchinson, there area plethora of brews both sim-ple and complex, both foreignand domestic. In an erawhere micro-brews andmake-your-own six-packs areall the rage, sometimes theaverage Budweiser just does-n’t cut it.

Here at The Bee, we’re hap-py to help navigate some ofthe unusual and popular op-tions available in Hutch, onesip at a time. Obviously this isjust a small taste of what’savailable, but it’s an excellentjumping-off point.

Keep it (somewhat) localKansas City may be in an-

other state, but we’ll claim itjust the same. BoulevardBrewing Co., based inKansas City, Mo., can comeright along with it. Boule-vard offers seven year-roundbeers, five seasonal beersand 13 special SmokestackSeries beers. They run the

gamut. If you like a goodwheat beer or IPA, you can’tgo wrong here. Find one thattickles your fancy here:http://www.boulevard.com/beers/about-our-beers/.

It’s $8.49 at Temaat Liquorfor a six-pack.

Sunflower ShowdownNo matter your colors, here

are some beers all Kansanscan enjoy. Tallgrass Brew-ery in Manhattan and FreeState Brewing Company inLawrence offer a wide selec-tion of beers worth yourtime. Tallgrass’ BuffaloSweat Porter and 8-Bit Aleare probably the most notablefrom the Purple City. Over on

the hill, grab an Ad AstraAle or Copperhead Pale Ale.It’s $8.33 for most Free Statevarieties at Egbert Liquor –$10.79 for most Tallgrassbeers also at Egbert Liquor.

For the adventurousTwisted Pine Billy’s

Chili Beer: Serrano, ha-banero, jalapeno, Anaheimand Fresno chili peppers arethe stars of this unfilteredwheat beer, providing won-derfully fresh, spicy aromaand a complex chili peppertaste. The chili flavor is mild, not dominant, thus makingfor an incredibly drinkablebeer that pairs great withfood and will leave youthirsty for more. It’s $8.99 atDJ Liquor.

ODell’s Fernet AgedPorter: Aged in empty Fer-net Barrels from LeopoldBros. Distillery. Their distinctFernet includes lavender, honeysuckle, ginger root, bit-ter aloe, dandelion root, rosepetals, chamomile and pep-per. Enjoy the herb-and-spiceflavors of this dark, mintyliqueur. The roasty chocolatemalt character is infusedwith hints of mint andlicorice from the herb-soakedoak, creating a decadent fla-vor and aroma. It’s $12.19 atDJ Liquor.

ODell’s Celastrina: Celast-rina, or Hops Blue, is namedfor a tiny blue butterfly foundliving on wild hop plantsalong the Front Range of Col-orado. Celastrina Saison paystribute to this winged crea-ture with delicate hints of ba-nana and clove-like flavor, typical of a traditional Sai-son, that flutter with a subtlespice character derived onlyfrom the hops used. Fun fact:$1 from each bottle sold willgo to the Colorado NaturalHeritage Program to helpfund research of the HopsBlue butterfly. It’s $12.19 at DJLiquor.

New Belgium Cigar CityCollaboration: Deep orangeand slightly hazy, it has afruity, citrus combo aromafrom hops, spice and yeastaromas. There’s a slightherbal, cedar note. The flavorstarts sweet, then has a littletangy tartness, but quicklyturns bitter and spicy. Greatcomplexity, for $7.19 at DJLiquor.

Horny Goat WatermelonWheat: Yeah. Watermelon.Sounds weird, but it’s worth atry. A nice, light session-can-didate wheat ale, it’s a greatsummer beer that goes downeasy, with a good flavor bal-ance and surprisingly goodbody. Unless you object to themelon element, this is hard toknock.
