From the Board…Hello,

As the new president of the Board of Directors for KSPS, I would fi rst like to thank Pati Dahmen for her great work and lively spirit on the Board, which she continues today as the past president.

I hope you had the opportunity to watch the Ken Burns documentary, The Vietnam War. As a veteran myself, as an Air Force nurse, I was stationed at Travis Air Force base where many of our returning troops passed through at the end of the war. It was a very impactful documentary for me personally. I was not able to watch all episodes consecutively every night in September, so I am glad that KSPS has been repeating the episodes on Tuesday nights. That wraps up in mid-November; and Frontline, which has been airing on Wednesdays, will then return to its regular Tuesday time slot.

With the new seasons of MASTERPIECE and all of our iconic series upon us, I hope you enjoy a fall and early winter full of quality, engaging programs. Thank you for making them possible with your support.

Sincerely,

Ann HurstChair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors

FROM THE COVER:

The Saga Continues…KSPS brings a bit of a “prequel” to our airing of Sgt. Pepper’s Musical

Revolution earlier this year. As you recall, that rockumentary explored the album that marked a turning point in The Beatles’ career — in which they stopped touring and live performances to pour all their creative energies into the recording studio.

Now we bring you The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years, based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966) — the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. The film explores how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary performing phenomenon. It reveals their inner workings — how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together — all the while, exploring The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film focuses on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966. The film premieres Saturday, Nov. 25 at 9 pm.

Thank you for helping make our locally produced programs possible

KSPS and Local Water Utilities: United for Safe Drinking Water

The Spokane Aquifer Joint Board (SAJB) is an organization of local water utilities working together to bring safe drinking water to communities across the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. SAJB aquifer education and awareness programs reach out to citizens, schools and businesses to protect our “sole source” aquifer. Here are ways you can be involved:

• Look for Aqua Duck on TV, billboards, print or in person at community events and find out what you can do to protect and conserve our drinking water.

• Look for opportunities to bring the “Aquifer in a Cup” lesson, a partnership between SAJB and KSPS, to your school or activity center. Email Kristen Zimmer: [email protected] .

If you are wondering how to properly dispose of wastes visit www.SpokaneWasteDirectory.org. SAJB sponsors these and other wellhead protection initiatives. Learn more at www.spokaneaquifer.org.

SAJB is thankful for you, the KSPS viewers, who care about our Inland Empire region. Working together we can protect and conserve our drinking water.

A Feel for Great Television…As I write this, it’s the week after the conclusion of Ken Burns' The Vietnam War, an epic series that

took two weeks and 18 hours to tell.

Over those two weeks, and still, I’ve had more conversations about this series than anything we’ve aired since Downton Abbey. And while those people had differing opinions about the series, all of them talked about how it made them FEEL.

Great television does that — remember how you felt when Matthew proposed to Mary? And how you felt a year later when Mary (and we) lost Matthew in that automobile accident?

How about the feeling of excitement when you guess the value of that nondescript vase that’s worth thousands on Antique Roadshow? Or the feeling of wonder from watching Wild Alaska Live! How about the feelings of pride and sorrow while watching the PBS National Memorial Day Concert? Or the surprise in finding a great story in our own backyard on KSPS Northwest Profiles?

You get the idea — great television combines great video, great sound and in most cases, great storytelling…all to provide those memorable moments that you can take with you for an hour…or for a lifetime.

At KSPS and PBS, bringing you great television is what we do…but bringing you feelings is who we are.

Thanks to you, KSPS has been able to mark 50 years of feelings — happiness, sadness, pride, anger, wonder — and as we mark the end of our first 50…we hope we can count on you to help us continue to bring those feelings to you for years to come.

Sincerely,

Our 50th Year at KSPS has been one chock-full of special events and activities. As KSPS has matured, it has evolved into a trusted and vital fixture in the communities we serve. We are honored to wear this mantle and strive to give back to the community in ways that express our gratitude to everyone. Below is a sampling of scenes from the events that KSPS hosted. Thank you for your support in making our participation possible.

Oh What a Year It's Been!

…And did you ever! Hundreds of members responded to our call for extra support at the end of our last fiscal year, August 31. It was a lofty goal; and thanks to you, we made it! That puts us in much better shape to pay the upcoming programming bills. We are very grateful for your ongoing support. You really do make great programs possible on KSPS!

FROM THE COVER:

KSPS brings a bit of a “prequel” to our airing of Sgt. Pepper’s Musical Revolution earlier this year.

25 at 8 pm.

Thank you for helping make our locally produced programs possible

From the Board…Hello,

As the new president of the Board of Directors for KSPS, I would first like to thank Pati Dahmen for her great work and lively spirit on the Board, which she continues today as the past president.
