A Sunday Reflection “THE LORD OUR GOD IS LORD ALONE!” (MK 12:29).

Shemá! Pay attention! That is how this prayer, which every devout Jew says every day, begins. It asks that we listen, and then proceeds to tell us that the Lord our God is Lord alone (12:29). You may wonder what is so significant about this, since we all believe that there is only one God.

But, beware! We may know it, but does it really make a difference in how we live our lives? We may acknowledge that there is only one God, but do we give Him pride of place? Look around you. How many things can you name that we have turned into gods without even realizing it? We may be overly concerned with status, possessions, wealth. It may be that health or knowledge are all important to us. Perhaps we have placed an ideology in God’s place. These are all “strange gods”, but gods nonetheless, inasmuch as we attach to them too much importance.

Let us take our cue from the scribe in today’s Gospel: “He is One and there is no other” (Mk 12:32). And let us follow the ancient prayer’s injunction by loving Him with all our heart, understanding and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves for His sake, for this “is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices” (12:33). As November begins, let us include in this love the Holy Souls in Purgatory, all our deceased relatives and friends, that the Lord may soon bring them to enjoy the vision of His glory in heaven. Domingo 31o del Tiempo Ordinario (Ciclo B) Reflexión Dominical

“EL SEÑOR NUESTRO DIOS ES UNO SOLO” (MC 12,29).

¡Shemá! ¡Escucha! Así comienza esta oración que todo judío devoto reza a diario. Pide que prestemos atención y pasa a decirnos que solo el Señor es Dios (12,29). Se preguntarán qué importancia tiene esto, pues ya sabemos y creemos que hay un solo Dios.

¡Cuidado! Lo sabemos pero, ¿esto cambia de alguna manera la forma como vivimos nuestra vida? Puede que reconozcamos que hay un solo Dios, pero ¿le damos el primer lugar en todo? Miremos a nuestro alrededor. ¿Cuántas cosas pueden nombrar que hemos convertido en dioses sin darnos cuenta? Puede que el estatus, las posesiones, la riqueza nos preocupen demasiado. Tal vez lo más importante para nosotros sea la salud, o el conocimiento. Quizás hemos colocado una ideología en el lugar que corresponde a Dios. Todos estos son “dioses extraños”, pero dioses al fin y al cabo en cuanto que les damos demasiada importancia.

Sigamos el ejemplo del escriba del Evangelio de hoy: “el Señor es uno solo y no hay otro fuera de él” (Mc 12,32). Sigamos el mandato de esa antigua oración amándolo con todo el corazón, toda la inteligencia, con todas nuestras fuerzas, y al prójimo como a nosotros mismos por amor a Él, pues esto “vale más que todos los holocaustos y sacrificios” (12,33). Ahora que comienza noviembre, que este amor se extienda a las almas del purgatorio, a todos nuestros familiares y amigos difuntos, para que el Señor los lleve pronto a participar de Su gloria en el cielo. Que Dios los bendiga.

More than 300 relics of the saints will be exposed for veneration on Friday, October 29, 6 pm to 8 pm, through Tuesday, November 2. Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, from 8 am to 8 pm. For the Solemnity of All Saints, November 1, there will be a Mass in English at 8 am and a bilingual Mass at 7 pm. Although All Saints is usually a holy day of obligation, the dispensation for attending Mass is still in effect in the Archdiocese of Miami. The Holy Eucharist THE EUCHARIST AS SACRIFICE (1)

[Now that we have looked at the place of sacrifice and covenant throughout salvation history], we are in a position to understand the relationship between the Eucharist and sacrifice. This association was made by Jesus himself...on the night before his death. As Luke tells us…, Jesus “took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19)…. “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). On Matthew’s telling, Jesus makes the sacrificial significance even clearer: over the cup he says, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matt. 26:27-28).

Jesus was using the Passover supper to give a definitive interpretation to the actions that he would take the next day, Good Friday. As this bread is broken and shared, so, he was saying, my body tomorrow will be broken and offered; as this cup is poured out, so my blood tomorrow will be poured out in sacrifice. In his crucified body, he will be like the Passover lamb slaughtered in the temple, signifying Israel’s total commitment to Yahweh and Yahweh’s to Israel.

In sum, the words of Jesus over the bread and cup at the Last Supper effected a stunning gathering of the variety of strands of covenantal and sacrificial theology in the Hebrew Scriptures. Thomas Aquinas commented that...the new law of the Gospel is efficacious because it is realized internally, through the identification of Christ and his Body the Church. And nowhere is this identification more complete than in the Eucharist, when a disciple physically consumes the incarnate Christ, the law par excellence.

La Sagrada Eucaristía LA EUCARISTÍA COMO SACRIFICIO (1)

[Ahora que hemos visto la relación entre alianza y sacrificio a lo largo de la historia de la salvación}, podemos comprender la relación entre la Eucaristía y el sacrificio. El mismo Cristo hace esta asociación...la noche antes de su muerte. Como nos dice Lucas…, Jesús “tomó pan, dio gracias, lo partió y se lo dio diciendo: “Esto es mi cuerpo, que se entrega por ustedes. Hagan esto en memoria mía” (Lucas 22,19)….”Esta es la copa de la nueva alianza, sellada con mi sangre” (Lucas 22,20). En el relato de Mateo, Jesús resalta el significado del sacrificio en forma aún más patente, al decir sobre el cáliz: “Beban todos de ella, porque esta es mi sangre de la alianza, que se derrama por muchos para el perdón de los pecados” (Mateo 26, 27-28).

Jesús usa la cena pascual para ofrecer la interpretación definitiva de lo que haría al día siguiente, Viernes Santo. Tal como este pan es partido y compartido, así, dice, mi cuerpo mañana será partido y ofrecido; tal como se derrama esta copa, así se derramará mi sangre en sacrificio. En su cuerpo crucificado, será como el cordero pascual sacrificado en el templo, que representa el compromiso total entre Yavé e Israel.

En fin, las palabras de Jesús sobre el pan y el cáliz durante la Última Cena llevan a cabo una sorprendente unión de los diversos temas teológicos sobre alianza y sacrificio que aparecen en las Escrituras hebreas. Tomás de Aquino comentó que...la nueva ley del Evangelio es eficaz porque tiene lugar internamente, mediante la identificación de Cristo y su Cuerpo, la Iglesia. Y en ninguna parte es esta identificación más completa que en la Eucaristía, cuando el discípulo físicamente consume al Cristo encarnado, que es la ley por excelencia.
