As the dark clouds slowly build over the capital, and the last remnants of sunny summer get washed away, Jakarta is preparing for another rainy season. Although the skies maybe a little more gloomy, it doesn’t mean that the good times have dried up in Jakarta. Let’s not forget we live in a city that never sleeps. Two much anticipated major events that are poised to rock Jakarta are the second edition of ‘Sundaze’, and ‘Halloween R&B Fever’. Plenty of other international acts will also make their way to Jakarta, but not as many as last month. Everybody is welcome to third edition of The Beat Jakarta BBQ at Lex (Liquid Exchange) next Sunday October 23. More good food, cheer and beers are back on the menu. Always remember to check TBJ’s What’s On, Scoop and Here Now sections to be in the loop about what’s going down in the big Durian over the next fortnight. Never miss a beat with TBJ in your hand!

Scoop

Any David Foster fans who may have missed his performance in Jakarta last year will be overjoyed to hear the so called ‘Hitman’ is returning to Jakarta for an encore performance. Like before, he won’t be alone, sharing the stage with big name performers including Michael Bolton, Charice, Phillip Bailey and Russel Watson. The return of David Foster is thanks to promoter Blackrock Entertainment, and will take place at Plenary Hall Jakarta Convention Center on the 28th of October. Ticket prices to the event range between 900k up to 6 million, and are available at regular ticket boxes as well as online.

The Hitman Returns

Answering the sudden explosion in popularity of K-Pop amongst the youth of Jakarta, promotor Marygops Studios will be presenting 2PM - one of Korea’s biggest boy bands. The all singing all dancing pretty boys will be performing at JITEC in Mangga Dua on the 11th of November. A total of 2000 pre-sale tickets have already been sold since ticket boxes were opened in late September, with a further 1000 already sold online. Expect the concert to be jam packed with plenty of hormonally-charged screaming girls, impatiently waiting to see their idols on stage. Ticket prices range between 850k for festival class, and up to 2 million for diamond class. Hurry as tickets are selling

quickly, so get yours online now before they are all sold out.

More K-Pop to Jakarta

This annual cross generation event has been very successful over the last two years, and is set to return again this month. On the 22nd of October, Istora Senayan will play host to some spectacular collaborations between musicians of all different eras. The lineup will include the sweet vocals of Margie Segers as she performs alongside the duo of Endah N’ Rhesa. Other duet performances will include indiepop icons Pure Saturday collaborating with Yockie Suryo Prayogo, Keenan Nasution performing with Sarasvati, and The Brandals rocking alongside legends Koes Plus. The event will start at 3pm, and is hosted by MC Sarah Sechan and Soleh Solihun. Tickets to the concert will only set you back 50k - a bargain for a great lineup of performances.

Hard Rock Cafe celebrated their 19th anniversary last week and it was once more onto the stage with the cake for the crew, my dear friends - I think Ipong must have been taking the photo. Paulus and the crew have been keeping the place busy with sounds and food since anyone can remember and continue doing a great job. This photo was taken on the night of the Alice Cooper show. Ipong said to TBJ, ““HRC Jakarta was truly honored to be able to celebrate its 19th Anniversary with the legendary Alice Cooper. It was, hands down, THE best concert performance we have seen this year! True testament that when a legendary man teamed up with a legendary brand, only great things would transpire! This is just a peak of more great things to come in the year of 2012. Stick with us. “

Anton Wirjono

SOuNDS LIKEHouse

HAILS FROM

Jakarta, Indonesia

HAS BEENDJ Anton’s name is synonymous with the rise of Indonesia’s dance music scene. DJ Anton has dedicated his life to expanding the house music scene in Indonesia, and is highly regarded by wannabe DJs wishing to be a part of his Future10 label. Back in the heyday of the old Parkit Club, Anton and his handful of DJs from Future10 transformed the happening hot spot in Menteng into one of the hippest underground clubs in the capital. Not only that, but he was also responsible for turning Bengkel and several other secret locations into massive rave/warehouse parties. Other events that have come from deep inside Anton’s brain include ‘Turn On Plastic’ recognized for featuring the latest dance beats, the clothing and music extravaganza that is ‘Brightspot Market’ and the nationally acclaimed ‘The Junction’. No longer using his old DJ moniker, he prefers to be recognized as Anton Wirjono.

IS NOWImmigrant will hold the ‘Tokyo Pirates’ event on the 21st of October, and the first mate of the swashbuckling event will be Captain Anton ‘Sparrow’ Wirjono. Immigrant has kept a tight lid on the details of this high seas concept party to keep clubbers curious. Want to know how it will turn out? Best make your way down there me hearties!

Penasaran ?.

HAIL FROM

Jakarta, Indonesia

HAvE BEENIf you’re blessed with natural beauty, then the logical start to your career in the limelight would be as a model - either on the catwalk or in magazines. Alannys Webber and Renza Moors know this well, as they both began their careers as models before diving into the world of DJing. Success as a model and actress wasn’t enough for Alannys, and after learning the ropes at Spinach Records, she went on to perform at many big name clubs around the nation, and even got invited to play in the Netherlands. Renza Moors had similar beginnings, starting as a model in 2006 and going on to study the art of remixing, finally debuting as a fully fledged DJ in 2008. In a short time she became a much sought after name on the local dance music scene, with many big club names requesting her presence.

Adam began introducing his music to the world on Myspace, and caught the attention of a producer at Universal Republic who instantly signed him up. There weren’t many people at the Alice Cooper concert out the front of Hard Rock Cafe last week,

which was a shame because it was a great show. Not just because you were in the presence of a true legend and genre defining rock n roll icon, but also because the band he had with him.

Included in the ensemble were two very special guitarists. On one side there was Orianthi, a 24 year old Aussie lass, who besides being the latest sensation in female rock guitarists and playing with the likes of Micheal Jackson and Santana, totally shredded every time she stepped forward. And the other side, Steve Hunter, who has played with Cooper since the beginning and played legendary lead guitar on top albums of many artists throughout the years, including one of my all-time favourites, Lou Reed’s immortal opening guitar riffs on his mid-seventies ‘Live’ album. Add to that, guitarist Tommy Erickson, Bass player Chuck Garric, drummer Glen Sobel, bold theatrics and stage props, and we had a rock show that left most people in the crowd in awe.

Alice Cooper’s four decades of rock show experience was splashed all over the stage with ebbs and flows through the show, which included swords, snakes, enormous monsters and a rag doll dummy being caressed and then finally beaten in a very shock-rock fashion. Actually that was the only truly shocking part of the show for many of feminist-inclined in the audience. Obviously Alice still enjoys coming up with ways for a good shock and that one did achieve a few groans, while most of the rest of the theatrics remained just that, good theatre. By the finale, Alice met his own grisly end by guillotine in the prop filled show that lasted one and a half hours.

All this theatrics arrived with a backdrop of some of the best rock music you are likely to hear. Tracks like Poison, Billion Dollar Babies, Only Women Bleed, School’s Out - tastily mixed with Pink Floyd’s The Wall, a exceptional drum and bass solo, and finishing with a grand rendition of Elected, this Alice Cooper show, which has been receiving glowing reviews wherever it goes around the world, was indeed a great show, and you were a lucky punter if you were one of the few who attended the show.

Global megastar rapper 50 Cent landed in Jakarta direct from the US to play in Jakarta at Epicentrum Walk on the 8th of October. An almost full-house turned out to witness Fiddy’s first concert in Indonesia. He played most of his hits from over the past decade but while the sound quality wasn’t doing the show many favours, 50 Cent and the six piece band and co-rapper Tony Yayo he brought with him managed to get most people’s hands in the air for the hour and a half set. The jacket throwing and consequent melee on three occasions was kinda gangster, but the cap thrown into the crowd and landing right on the head of a kid next to us took the hat, literally. It was the strangest finish to a concert I can recall with the band finishing with a bunch of kids from the audience on stage, hamming it up and then walking off stage - no encore, no applause. I wasn’t the only one scratching my head.

perdananya: Eye Contact. Bertaburkan 10 tembang serta 1 hidden track, genre yang dijalani masih sama sejak pertama berangkat bermusik yaitu modern psychedelic rock blues. Formula tersebut berupa saling silang antara The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, dicampursari dengan sound khas nan terkini ditimpali keyakinan hanya tampil berdua saja, instrumen gitar dan drum saja, baik saat rekaman maupun konser. Single pertamanya, "She's Alright", kental merepresentasikan genre yang disebut tadi. Plus tanpa melupakan aspek mudah dicerna, ramah bagi kuping, lagi gampang mengundang ajojing.

Sebelum final berkeputusan membeli albumnya, silakan yakinkan diri dulu, sambangi MySpace, bergabung di Facebook page-nya, atau datang dan saksikan langsung aksi mereka mumpung sedang sering diundang manggung terutama di seantero Jakarta!

The experience BroThers:

Killer eye conTacT

The city of Bekasi has never been much known for its musical talent, that is, with the possible exeption of The Experience Brothers. The rockin’ duo are currently playing to packed audiences all over the place, not to mention having a new album out there.

After forming as a trio in 2001 and recording their first album in 2008 called ‘Summer of Love’, they decided to change the lineup to a duo, featuring Ibrahim Saladdin as the lead vocalist

and guitarist, and Daud Sarassin in charge of drums and backing vocals. In 2011 they finally released their new album ‘Eye Contact’, with the track ‘She's Alright’ as their first single. Their influences range from the Beatles, the Who and Led Zeppelin to modern psychedelic rock blues.

If you’re still not convinced, check them out first on MySpace and join their Facebook page, or try to catch one of their frequent live gigs around town.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?

One of those collector items of merchandise from our band Superman Is Dead hehe… I can relive the band’s story as somebody else, and I can also find out just what people really think about me, too. I will get the story from all sources including my family, kids, and friends that are connected to this band. Yeahyeahyeah…

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy?

I haven’t read any books lately but I’ve had many lessons about the life. If you asked me what website I’m reading right now, I would answer ‘Google’ haha.

What new movie should people see? Why?I am addicted to 3D cinema recently. ‘Drive Angry’ with Nicolas Cage is highly recommended. The message is: ‘Go back home after the case is solved!’ Plus the 3D technology is great!

What song do you choose to start your weekend?

‘Love Like Winter’ by AFI from the December Underground album.

And song you choose to end your weekend?‘The saddest song’ by The Ataris from the So Long Astoria album.

What music are you into at the moment?‘Recipe For Hate’ by Bad Religion. This is not a brand new release album - it’s not even new stuff by Bad Religion. I hadn’t listened to this album for a long time, it’s made me realize how I needed the sound from it - and now I am cured! There are a lot more beats and rhythms, warm sounds, and unpredictable lyrics thrown in to make it complete.

What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it?

‘Eclipse’ by Yngwie Malmsteen, 1990. That album wasn’t really my first introduction to music. I had listened to lots of different albums back then (belonging to my older brother). But ‘Eclipse’ was the first one I totally owned. I bought the album after reading the review from this old school now-defunct tabloid called Citra. ‘Eclipse’ was about my high school romance hehe… And Yngwie did that for me. Rock and firing heart!

What is your all-time favourite album? Why?‘Scenes’ by Marty Friedman. It’s the second studio album by the legendary guitarist, released in 1992. I’ve bought this album several times, either because it was lost or stolen. The instruments can kick the dizziness out of my head - sensational! What I can describe about this album is the really soft-colour that makes you close your eyes and hold your breath (even your hands) frequently. A dangerous unseen attack from the ex-thrash metal guitarist of Megadeth!

What was the worst record you ever purchased?

‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves OST’. There was only one song, ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You’, by Bryan Adams that I really could listen to. The rest was kinda orchestral stuff they used in the movie. Phew, please take note: I just wanted to listen to music with my portable stereo tape recorder, not to imagine or pretend as if I was in the cinema.

With this saying in mind, why not do something charitable for your community? The 6th Annual Jakarta Race Against Cancer

is coming up this Sunday, October 23rd. And why do it alone? You could take your boyfriend, girlfriend, mum, dad, brother, sister, friends... The more the merrier, and the proceeds will be going towards cancer education and prevention.

This annual charity event was started in 1981 by Isadore Sharp, the founder and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

RuntoCa n C e RB e a t“

who made a commitment to join the fight against the infamous disease, after being inspired by the fight of an 18 year old from Winnipeg named Terry Fox against bone cancer. Since then, the event has been held around the world to raise funds for cancer research and finding a cure. This will be the sixth time the race has been held in Jakarta.

In Jakarta, the concept of the event is a little different than other countries; the donations will not only be used for cancer research, but also for awareness programs and direct patient support by working with the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (Yayasan Kanker Indonesia). Keep Your Mind Sharp!IT’S NOT JUST YOUR BODY, YOUR BRAIN ALSO NEEDS ExERCISE IN ORDER TO STAY SHARP. OUR BRAINS NEED STIMULATING AND CHALLENGING TASKS TO RETAIN COGNITIVE AND MEMORY SKILLS - WHEN A BRAIN IS GIVEN A REGULAR WORK OUT, IT WILL STAY SHARPER FOR LONGER. THE SAYING ‘USE IT OR LOSE IT’ TRULY APPLIES!

Here’s some of the ways to exercise your brain that TBJ would like to share with you:

1. Try new activities. Doing things that require the memorization of complex steps will exercise the

brain. Learn a new language, a musical instrument, or play a game you never played before in your life. Playing chess is a good idea.

2. Do games and mind-testing puzzles such as Sudoku, Scrabble or crossword puzzles. Did you

know that doing crossword puzzles can minimize the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s?

3. Set aside a specific amount of time

to read. Magazines, newspapers, books, novels, anything out there will do the job.

4. Use your less dominant hand often. Focusing on performing tasks accurately with this hand

will strengthen your brain.

5. Expand your vocabulary. Learn a new word everyday

using a dictionary or thesaurus.

6. Use a map instead of a GPS. The complicated streets of Jakarta on a big piece of paper will

surely give your brain a workout.

7. Get rid of your calculator. Do maths the old-

fashioned way using a pen and a piece of paper.

8. Anything that needs assembly at

home such as furniture, electronics, or toys is good for your brain.

9. Listening to your favourite songs and

singing them back by recalling the lyrics is a lot of fun, and also perfect brain training.

Don’t forget to exercise your body as well; a healthy body promotes a healthy mind. (Dini Siregar)

The Duo

Page 53: The Beat Jakarta 49

Classicalmusic

053 beatmag.com

In classical music, you either shine alone and become a soloist, or you can join a group and be part of that. However this is not always the case if you consider a duo as a career option. Around world, there are many dynamic duos,

such as the sisters of Duo Gazzana from Italy (piano and violin), the London Classical Duo from the United Kingdom (harp and flute) and the world renowned guitarists, the Assad Brothers.

Around the end of this month, Jakarta is fortunate to have one of those famous duos coming to town. Performing in concert is the husband and wife duo of Patrick Zygmanowski and Tamayo Ikeda. Although it is not the first time that this duo has been in Indonesia, it is of course still very exciting to be welcoming them once again to Jakarta.

2006 was the last visit for this duo to Indonesia, and at that time they performed in Surabaya. Encouragingly, they received an amazing response not only from the audience but also the media. Duncan Graham of Indonesia Now wrote: “Their style is flamboyant, with both bottoms bouncing on the shared stool and Ikeda’s long hair taking flight as if in a TV shampoo commercial. She’s a particularly demonstrative player and lets her arms soar high above the keyboard. Her husband is not much different. The effect is a whirling windmill of limbs”.

Both Tamayo and Patrick took up piano at an early age, and already started receiving awards in their teens. Tamayo who is originally from Japan, moved to France to study at the Conservatoire National Superieur in Paris, where she studied piano with Jacques Rouvier and chamber music with Regis Pasquier. Her unique approach to the repertoire has been awarded in many competitions such as the Yvonne Lefebure International Competition and Porto International Competition, as well as Francis Poulenc International Competition where she won the first prize and the special Casadesus prize.

Like Tamayo, Patrick Zygmanowski also went to the same conservatory and studied under the same teachers too. His playing has been described as “lifting his partner with elegance and authority, as in a ballet”, and Zygmanowski himself as “a sensitive artist with a delicate and expressive

touch”. He has been performing around the world, producing some notable recordings, and has received some prestigious awards as well.

Together, this duo is also known as The Ykeda Duo, that specialises in music for four hands. In the past they have put Mozart, Ravel and Gershwin on their repertoire, hopefully they will do it again for their upcoming concert, since we still have not yet been informed about the program.

Aside from this duo, we also going to have another duo performance, only this time it’s a vocal duo. The tenor is Untung Parlindungan Siahaan, and the soprano is Diani Rinarti Sitompul. The duo will sing a combination of duets and solo arias from famous Italian operas. On the program are highlights from Verdi’s La Traviata, some Puccini and Donizetti to the beloved Mozart.

So make sure not to miss both of these duos. They are sue to be simply duolicious….

HaciendA

exico might be worlds apart from Indonesia, but it has its own tradition of spicy food. I fell in love with Mexican food back when

I was living in Los Angeles. It was foreign, but somehow felt familiar to me. It is rare to find a restaurant serving such fare in Jakarta, let alone one serving high quality authentic Mexican food with traditional tastes. Thanks to Hacienda, the popularity of Mexican cuisine is now steadily increasing among foodies here.

Located in the Arcadia building in the back of Plaza Senayan, Hacienda has become the place for genuine cocina Mexicana in the capital, and chef Gerardo Milan, a native of Morelia in central

Mexico, is the person responsible for bringing this exquisite Mexican dining experience to the heart of our capital.

Hacienda’s décor is simple yet stylish; framed pictures of Mexico hanging on the pastel-coloured walls, nicely accented by touches of wood. The subtle lighting makes Hacienda a suitable place for romantic dinners, but if a small fiesta is more your style, you’ll feel equally at home, too.

Start your Mexican culinary journey with the tableside guacamole (59k) - a delicious traditional avocado dip, prepared with the freshest ingredients to your liking, and served with crispy tortilla

chips. The whole tableside preparation is an art in itself. The hearty tortilla soup (49k) is another noteworthy starter - rich chicken broth, flavoured with onions, carrots, tomatoes, cilantro, guajillo and ancho peppers, with freshly grilled chicken breast, crispy tortilla strips and topped with a cheese sombrero.

The taquitos (59k) are deep fried tortilla rolls filled with seasoned shredded beef, and the chicken quesadilla (75k) - warm flour tortilla filled with cheese, chicken, and jalapeño peppers - are among the favourites of Hacienda’s regulars. Both are served with fresh pico de gallo, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream.

For the main course, the wonderful camarones a la diabla (159k) is a real winner. Succulent shrimps in spicy red chili sauce, served with Mexican rice and sautéed vegetables hit all the right notes.

The use of cocoa powder in savoury dishes may seem like a startling idea, but the mole sauce, a specialty of the Oaxaca region, gives a depth of colour and flavour to meat dishes like nothing else. The pollo con mole (99k) is an excellent example here. Chicken smothered in peanut chocolate chili sauce, served with Mexican rice, tortillas, and sautéed vegetables. It’s really something worth savouring.

The chile relleno (179k) is another brilliant dish - poblano chili stuffed with beef and melted cheese, covered with egg butter and then fried and served in tomato sauce with refried beans, Mexican rice, and tortillas on the side. Simply ¡Delicioso!

As for dessert, the banana rum salsa (49k) is a must. The dark rum glazed banana salsa, with vanilla ice cream is the epitome of heavenly!

And don’t you dare go to Hacienda without trying their magnificent Margaritas! (85k each) With 15 different labels, Hacienda has probably the most extensive selection of tequila in Jakarta. Their happy hour (buy one get one free for all types of margaritas and cocktails, everyday from 3 to 7pm) is already a ritual for many. ¡Salud!

It’s been quite some time since some old friends and I had our last after work hang out, so we decided to go to Marley - a restaurant and bar that surprisingly none of us we have visited.

Marley is a cozy and casual establishment located inside The Energy Building, close to Pacific Place mall. It has an intimate, loungy feel courtesy of dim lighting, dark décor and plush chairs. Some nice retro chic elements are also thrown in for good measure.

It’s always good too see your friends, and the nachos with beef chili con carne and cheese (57k) started us off on a high. Some buffalo chicken wings and crudités (46k) also helped. These tasty appetizers really went down well with our beers, hungrily wolfed in no time at all by everyone. After the usual catching up banter, we were ready for something a little more substantial, and ordered a couple of scrumptious seafood dishes - namely the British style fish and chips (45k), the deep fried buttered dori fish with straight cut fries and home made tartar sauce, and the seafood capellini (75k) with capellini pasta aglio olio, prawns and New Zealand green mussels.

The Marley pepper steak (115k) was my order, and the crusted black pepper beef rib eye steak with sautéed vegetables and straight cut fries topped with a tasty home made pepper sauce certainly did not disappoint.

Marley also offers quite a selection of Asian fare, but should you feel like having a more local type of comfort food with a twist, the Marley Wagyu fried rice (95k) is probably your best bet. It’s fried rice, Indonesian style, with sautéed Wagyu beef and

fried kalasan chicken. One of my friends ordered this one and firmly gave it the two thumbs up.

Marley’s drinks are also very noteworthy, my personal favourite being an exceptionally refreshing mocktail called the Toronjada (45k). It’s a wonderful blend of grapefruit, hand muddled lime, freshly squeezed orange juice, soda water and crushed ice.

Signature drinks here include the passion fruit gimlet (90k), with passion fruit, freshly squeezed lime juice, pineapple juice, Absolut vodka and fresh thyme. Alternatively, if you feel like having a bit more bite in your drink, the one love (90k) and Marley’s angels (110k) are probably the ones to go for. The former having 24 different liquors and spirits in it, while the latter one has 28! Cheers!

The friendly staff informed us about their special lunch packages, with a meal and a drink for just 50k nett each. Now there’s a good midday meal option for all you office workers out there.

Marley is also known for their excellent live acts on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Their ‘open mic’ nights are proving to be a popular alternative for many of Jakarta’s music lovers. Some tribute nights are also held here. Two special Weezer and Grunge themed nights here were big hits recently, with an Oasis night to be held on October 28.

All in all, it was a good little reunion for me and my friends, and we hope to come back for one of the live music nights. Maybe you’ll even see us on the stage!

Imagine a movie that combines elements of Rocky, Transformers, and battle video games. Well imagine no longer, as Real Steel brings together robots, boxing and battles for our viewing pleasure. Add to that a sentimental father and son plotline, throw in some top end special effects and erstwhile Wolverine Hugh Jackman (X-Men 1-3), and on paper this flick starts to look pretty darn epic. Definitely one for the big screen.

Cooler gadgets, trickier mission, same bumbling secret agent. Yes, Johnny English from MI7 is back in action after honing his skills for years in a remote region in Asia. Now he must save the Chinese premier’s life from an rogue agent turned assasin, while uncovering a web of conspiracy that involves the KGB, CIA and M17 itself. Using every trick in the dashing secret agent’s book, failure is quite simply not an option. Whoever said that a secret agent should be serious and can’t make you laugh out loud?

“Production value, production value!” screams Chubby Charles, acting as director of an indie movie he’s shooting with his friend Joe Lamb, our unlikely hero in this sci-fi romp from J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg. Even without considering Spielberg’s influence, the homage to ET: The Extra Terrestrial is clear, but there’s nothing genteel about this action-packed slice of Americana. Keep watching as the credits roll to see the final cut of Charles’ movie project.

SUpER 8Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Writer and Director: J.J. Abrams. Cast: Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Kyle Chandler, Noah Emmerich,

Setelah beberapa tahun menghilang dari peredaran, agen terkenal M17, Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean) ternyata melatih keahlian dirinya berkeliling benua Asia.

Many of us may have heard that Indonesia hosted the World Batik Summit 2011, held from September 28th to October 2nd at the Jakarta

Convention Center. For those who didn’t hear about the summit, it was an event that united batik loving countries around the world to showcase all the different styles. Participating countries included the United States, Australia, Netherlands, China, Philippines, the UK, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, France and Tunisia.

The summit featured an international conference about batik, batik exhibitions, batik photo exhibitions, a gala dinner and fashion show. For the fashion show, seven Indonesian designers got the chance to show off their ability to design using batik. The designers were Anne

Avantie, Bi Batik, Carmanita, Chossy Latu, Parang Kencana, Danar Hadi, Ramli and Sebastian Gunawan.

As usual, what we saw from Anne’s collection was the graceful and glittering kebaya. This time, she attempts to match contemporary kebaya fashions with classic batik motifs from Solo and Jogjakarta. Unlike Anne Avantie, Bi Batik has created contemporary styled apparel that is influenced by Japanese touches using batik from Madura, Bantul and Cirebon, combined with non-traditional fabrics. Meanwhile, Carmanita is more playful in her dress designs, with bright-coloured classic batik in loose silhouettes, and Chossy chose monochrome batik with floral and butterfly motifs, transforming it into 1940s inspired garments.

Danar Hadi has gone for a more formal approach, with a range of men’s shirts and long gowns with elegantly subtle batik designs. Parang Kencana also focused his attention on long gowns and men’s shirts, although Parang used softer colours such as turquoise, greys and purples. The show continued as Ramli showed off his collection of batik prada, before finally Sebastian Gunawan showcased his elegant collection of Pekalongan batik.

What’s good about this fragrance is unravelling layers of the various scents. Although it’s fronted by Taylor Momsen who has a really rebellious image, the fragrance has no rebellious air to it at all. John Galliano said, on choosing Momsen as the face for the fragrance, it is because he wanted a romantic young rock chic, and Momsen was the perfect face to bring this new essence because she embodies this image.

This scent is geared up toward the 20-something audience, but it’s really fitting for anyone trying to find a scent that has a young feel to it. Like a love letter, you’ll find many wonderful feelings when you spray this fragrance. John Galliano Parlez-moi d’Amour is available in 50 ml (Rp 850,000) and 80ml (Rp 975,000) bottles from all good stockists.

NEW FRAGRANCE SPEEKS THE WORDS OF Love

When I first got my hands on John Galliano’s newest fragrance, Parlez-moi d’Amour, in its white box with floral stamp on the

top right corner of the box, it somehow felt like receiving a letter. Opening the box and finding the bottle of perfume shaped like a rose-coloured glass envelope, also with a stamp, only confirmed that feeling. Love letters are very romantic, no matter how short or cheesy they are, and the gesture is very heart warming. Now people take love letters for granted because of the ease of communication through email, instant messages and even Twitter.

‘Parlez-moi d’Amour’ - translated to ‘speak to me of love‘ is all about a modern day love affair that is bottled and presented through fruity floral notes. It‘s opened up with a fresh bloom of ginger, bergamot and blueberries which take center stage. Just like any love story, this fragrance begins with a strong scent that settles down after being warmed on the skin.

Layers of floral notes, jasmin sambac, lavender oil and Turkish rose all hint towards the seductive notion of youth. Doesn’t feeling in love always make you feel young? As it soaks into your skin,

Secular modernity exists all over the world, particularly in the pages of glossy,

lifestyle magazines. But behind that shiny modern face, there’s an unbearable violence - a world which is fighting with itself.

Blown by the winds of globalization, modernity has spread to all corners of the globe, creating as many problems as it solves. Fundamentalist movements often provoke radical reactions from a world marked by the return of religion in a post secular era. Wedhar is a contemporary Javanese artist who seeks to show that conflict. He steals the glossy pictures from magazines of global capitalist culture and comically combines them with images of human

fear and violence to create a parody of consumerism with his drawings, paintings, and objects d’art. Wedhar Riyadi was born in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 1980. He studied at the Fine Arts Faculty of Yogyakarta Indonesian Art Institute. His works often blend dark and humourous elements inspired by science fiction, horror, cartoons, music and fashion in various mediums such as drawings, murals, comics, illustrations, stickers, posters and three dimensional objects.

Wedhar is now considered something of a new rising star in the contemporary visual art world in Indonesia. He took part in a project and residency in

SHOW OPEN TILL 30 OCT 2011

Okinawa, Japan in 2008, and also has partaken in a series of group exhibitions in a few international galleries in Singapore, Hong Kong, New York and Switzerland.

Wedharhas was also chosen as one of the participants of Biennale Jogja xI 2011 and Asia Pacific Triennale 2012.

Little white Lies are usually told with the best of intentions, and this is the theme for Dita Gambiro’s first solo show. Dita’s ‘White Lies’ explore the values that we invariably need to deal with in a

loving relationship (perhaps in social relationships as well), especially in relation to trust.

In the exhibition, Dita presents to us the issue of trust in a series of works, which she has constructed by processing a variety of common shapes that are familiar especially to women. There are high-heeled shoes, boots, gloves, bags, and dresses made of breaded hair, combined with brass objects such as keys on a wooden table, clothes hangers in a goldish hue and a knife.

These objects represent the issue of ambiguity that is related to love and relationships, the institution of marriage, and also the fragments of domestic life. At the same time, they also create signs of doubts. Meanwhile, for women the hair is a symbol of beauty, a sacred crown. The use of a variety of forms or methods of hair braiding becomes a significant element in Dita’s oeuvre. Apart from serving as symbols and metaphors for the themes in her works, aesthetically and artistically the hair serves as an interesting alternative in terms of idiom. Dita uses a range of types and colours of hair that are on sale in many traditional markets such as the ones in Yogyakarta.

With her hair works, Dita talks about the different issues around her, a young woman experiencing contemporary urban culture. She arranges the hair braids and combines them with various elements, using them as unlimited metaphors. For example, making a huge hair bun or creating an igloo, a dress, or a broom. Dita presents her signs and symbols in a highly characteristic way. Her braided hair works seem familiar to us, appearing quite relaxed - laden with fashion references, and at the same time slightly agitated and peppered with tension, irony, and humour.

Bali has many events in its annual calendar but not many of them are specifically developed for the international community. One such event is the Jakarta Highland Gathering, which has focused on the core traditions of the Scottish Highland Games for the past 32 years. The organizers of the Jakarta Highland Gathering have set up a garden party right here in Bali, based on traditional English garden parties such as the Queen’s annual summer gathering in the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The event will feature flower arranging and a dog show over its two days, starting on the 29th and ending on the 30th of October at Taman Bhagawan in Tanjung Benoa. Enjoy an English summer right here in Bali, particularly now the wet season seems to be on the way... For all information check out www.baligardenparty.com

Jason Mraz Heading to BaliAmerican singer songwriter, Jason Mraz will be making his way to Bali on the 9th of November to perform at Taman Bhagawan, Tanjung Benoa. His performance in Bali will be part of a four nation tour through Asia and themed ‘Jason Mraz: A Special Acoustic Evening with Toca Riviera’. Rivera is a long time friend and renowned percussionist who has played a key-performing role in Jason Mraz’s successful album releases and public performances to date. This will be Mraz’s second time performing in Indonesia after his last appearance at Java Jazz 2009 which received rave reviews. Tickets to the event are available online and range between 390k (regular) up to 890k (VIP).

New to Nusa DuaA new place to wine, dine and dance will soon open its doors in the Tanjung Benoa area, offering magnificent views of the Indian Ocean in a luxurious setting. reviewreview

The culinary spectrum of Bali is growing ever more diverse, particularly at the epicurean end of things, where French,

Italian and Japanese cuisines are well represented by a select group of high-end eateries. Flying the flag for serious Turkish cuisine, Petitenget’s Tulip restaurant and lounge joins the island’s elite list of restaurants that provide quality service, tasteful décor, and above all amazingly good food created by passionate people.

If you’re after a greasy doner, you’ve come to the wrong place. Tulip serves up the freshest and finest authentic Turkish food this side of Istanbul for lunch and dinner, with a vast array of meze tasters sitting alongside both vegetarian and carnivorous mains - not to mention devilish desserts and an impressive wine list.

Once past the ample car parking area in front (don’tcha just hate having to park on the street around Seminyak?), the restaurant opens out on to a breezy garden area with two large lilly ponds either side of a raised walkway to the back. A large bar runs down the right side, with classically elegant wooden chairs and tables scattered throughout. Being so far back from the road, the overall ambience is pleasingly chilled out, with the muted sounds of classic jazz spilling lazily out of the speakers.

Currently playing host to family from home, I decide to bring along the rabble to help me out with things. Lucky I did to, as the meze tray selection of no less than 17 different Turkish style tapas certainly plays well to a crowd. Prepared fresh everyday, the meze selections are available individually for between 25-30k+, or as a package

with a selection of 5(120k+), 7(170k+), 9(220k+), 11(250k+) or all 17(350k+). Every single one looks suitably tempting, but we manage to exercise a bit of restraint and pick out the hummous, haydari, circassain chicken, kopoglu and muammara, along with a bowl of freshly baked ciabatta and Turkish puff bread. To round off the starters, we order up a couple of Turkish pizzas, namely the kasarli and sucuku pide, and lahmacun (30k+), which I’m reliably informed was around long before the Italians started smearing tomatoes onto flat bits of bread...

I could quite easily graze on this kind of food all day, but it’s time for the mains, which come in the form of the steamed barramundi (90k+), and the Tulip signature dish of kuzu guvec (140k+). Although the tender white barramundi is nothing less than mouthwatering, it’s the seven hours slow cooked lamb and vegetables of the signature dish that is the clear crowd pleaser. A Mediterranean salad (40k+) rounds off the mains. Despite being just three months in town, Tulip has already made a name for itself with its dessert list, and so without too much persuasion, I’m convinced that we should put this reputation to the test, and before long we’re crossing dessert spoons over a plate of profiteroles (45k+) and the latticed sugar of the spectacular sutlac (35k+).

With a lounge areas complete with sofas and shishas on the way and late night snacks available on Saturdays, the future looks assured for this new addition to Petitenget’s fine dining scene.

Simon Patterson

It may have been a Thursday, but there’s always a reason to party

at Sky Garden, particularly when there’s a guest performance by #28 ranked world DJ Simon Patterson on the decks. With performances from the resident DJs, fire dancers and sexy dancers, the crowd only grew larger as the night raged on. Taking his place on the decks at the stroke of midnight, Simon unleashed his trance rhythms to the waiting crowd.

Bitten by the Tensnake

The funky tropical beats of the tenacious Marco Niemerski AKA Tensnake echoed from the underground venue of Woo Bar. The

resident DJs kicked things off until Tensnake was ready to unleash his beats to the crowd. Another solid night down at the WooBar with great music and vibes.
