2016 R1-20/FREE 24 June On Saturday, 18 June, the community of Bela-Bela came together in the early hours of the morning to help put out a fire at a foreign-owned shop in the township. Members of the community carried buckets to douse the flames threatening the business of Juhar Deffacho and his younger brother Beyn Deffacho, but the shop was reduced to ashes. The fire was allegedly caused by hot wax polish. In an interview where Juhar served as interpreter, Beyn said that he was working behind the counter when he saw smoke and a small flame coming from a wax pot on the TK Mashaba stove. “There was a loud explosion, and I ran into the street,” he said. Beyn said that when he first saw members of the community rushing toward the shop he panicked, thinking that they were going to attack him, but they were all there to help battle the flames. The fire consumed everything in the shop and also affected the next-door Kwadi family. Several elderly women who had been in the nearby yard had to be rushed to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Juhar said that the damage to the building and their stock was estimated to be in the hundreds of rands, but could not say precisely how much. Juhar also took the opportunity to thank the community for their help, even though his shop was destroyed. “We are like one family here,” Juhar said. “I have lived in Bela-Bela for many years.” SACP co-ordinator Andrew Laka said that he was driving to a funeral when he saw the fire. He pulled off his jacket and tie and started rallying members of the community to help. “I was among the first to arrive,” he said. “I called on passers-by to help, and many people suspended their personal activities to assist.” He said that he hoped that other communities could learn from this generosity of spirit. Of course, not everything could be sunshine and roses. Several members of the community were seen fleeing the scene carrying goods varying from frozen meat to cigarettes. The community blames emergency services for their late response, which they say is typical. Johannes Chauke from Leseding, one of the first to start helping the family to remove their furniture, said that it was half an hour before the fire brigade arrived. “We appeal to the municipality to speed up their service when it comes to things like this,” he said. “If they had responded more quickly, half the store could have been saved.” This shop, belonging to Juhar and Beyn Deffacho, caught fire on Saturday, 18 June. Three suspects are expected to appear beforethe Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court this week oncharges of murder and burglary. This followsan incident at Extension 5, formerly known asMandela Village, on Monday, 20 June.Detective Constable Frans Sekgobela of the

Bela-Bela police said that the suspects werefighting with a friend of the complainant, JerryNtshudisane, when he tried to seek peacebetween the parties only to allegedly have themboth turn on him. The detective added thatNtshudisane spent the night at a relative’shome, scared for his life after the suspectsallegedly threatened him.The suspects allegedly then went to his home

and found his uncle, whom they attacked andkilled.“According to an eyewitness who cannot be

A traditional wedding in Bela-Bela which was held onSaturday 18 June in Reitz Street may be in violation ofits permit.

The celebrations saw a local couple, Ophelia Pholosiand Thekiso Mataboge, exchanging their vows in frontof 300 guests in front of Ophelia’s parents’home. Thestreet had been closed off for the proceedings to takeplace.

Ophelia’s sister, Nthabiseng Pholosi, explained thecustoms involved in such a wedding.

“In our culture (Sotho) two weddings take place, thefirst being a traditional wedding and the other a ‘whitewedding’. In the case of a traditional wedding it iscustomary to have the wedding at the homes of bothindividuals who are getting married. We had the firstpart of the wedding here at my father’s house and thenwent on to Thekiso’s parents’ home at Mampatile in thetownship,” she said.

Nthabiseng said that the wedding is more familyorientated and focuses on the joining of the two houses.

She explained that her father, Thabo Moselane, hadapplied for the permit to have the wedding on the streettwo months prior and was approved within 2 weeks.

The permit was valid for 24 hours and was subject toconditions such as the road not being damaged and thatonly one line is to be closed on the road whereapplicable.

Moselane said that shortly after he had applied for thepermit, he notified his neighbours of the pendingcelebrations and even invited them to attend.

“I did not want to inconvenience anyone and madesure that my neighbours were notified accordingly,” he

Justin Steyn & Andries van der Heyde said.Moselane said that he had received no complaints

regarding the wedding and was only approached by DACouncillor, Kobus van der Merwe, who asked if thewedding had been permitted. Moselane was then ableto produce the permit.

Van der Merwe told reporters that the head of thetraffic department at the municipality has to take intoconsideration, whenever an application is brought toclose a road, if the event will cause disruptions andduring which time is should be held before a permit isgranted.

“Other alternative venues could have been considered, but the fact that the road was damaged where tent poleswere struck into the road and two lanes instead of onewas used for the venue is totally unacceptable,” saidVan der Merwe.

The permit, which The BEAT has a copy of, statedthat the road must not be damaged during the functionand that only one lane was allowed for use. On the dayof the wedding two lanes were used and the road wasstruck with tent poles.

“I am not totally against the closing of a road for aspecial event, but roads are essentially for traffic. Thesetypes of events, where a tent is pitched, should notbecome a regular occurrence in town, because it mighthappen that a main road is considered for closure in thefuture and there are by-laws in place that are clear onthe matter.”

Van der Merwe said that he will look into the matteras soon as possible.

The issue was brought under the attention of PreciousRaputsoa, head of Planning and Social Development atthe Municipality, who made a note to take the matter upwith the relevant department.

Soggy messsorted atpublic park

The serious leak at the town park inBela-Bela has been repaired shortlyafter being reported by a resident.

The BEAT previously reported thatTshepo Dlamini, a resident, said thathe grew concerned when he noticedthe massive amount of water that hadbeen leaking from the park’s pondarea, which has transformed much ofthe grass into what he referred to as amarshy mess.

“I visit the park quite regularly withmy children, but I have noticed a leakthat seems to come from somewherenear the pond area.

“I am concerned that the area mightbecome unpleasant for those who visitthe park,” he said.

The manager of the neighbouringbowling courts, Nick Pretorius, saidthat he suspects the leakage is causedby a damaged sprinkler pipe.

In a brief telephonic interview,Risimati Ntikela, the municipality’sHead of Technical Services, confirmed the leakage and said thatthe leakage was due to a loose mounton one of the sprinklers. He addedthat the sprinklers have not beenturned on since their installation andthe problem may not have beennoticed after the sprinkler system hadbeen installed

He has since encouraged thecommunity to report similar events tohis department.
