Auction Update: Looking Ahead to 2009 and Back at 2008Included in this issue you will find information about Auction 2009, Masquerade in Venice. Summer is a wonderful time to procure as you go on outings or vacation or just about your usual activities. Please take time to read over the Wish List and How-To sheet and take your Auction Procurement Forms along wherever you go. Dedicated procurers carry them in their car so they are always ready to ask for a donation when the opportunity arises. Our goal is to have every family generate one item with a value of $150. Call the Auction Office if you need any help.

It is very exciting to report, thanks to additional donations and matching funds, that our net total from the March 15, 2008 auction has increased to just over $284,000. We expect all the technology purchases from the Fund-A-Need, that was so generously supported, to be installed in the computer labs by the opening of school in September.

Calling All PTF ReimbursementsPlease turn in your forms requesting PTF reimbursement immediately. The final deadline is Monday, June 23 for LS PTF reimbursements and Friday, June 13 for MS & US PTF reimbursements. PTF reimbursement forms are available at the front desk of either campus. Aide Positions AvailableBear Creek is currently hiring Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School aides for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year. Qualified candidates should work effectively with teachers and students, have a pleasant attitude, and be detail oriented. Job perks include working in a supportive, fun

environment while your kids are in school! Positions range from 15 to 20 hours per week. For more information, please contact Carol Harrang at [email protected] or 425-898-1720.

Host Family Opportunities for Bear Creek FamiliesIf you would like to host an international student next year, please contact Katie Humphries, International Student Services Coordinator (425-898-1720 ext. 316 or [email protected]), and she will refer you to local homestay agencies. These agencies provide extensive training programs, resource materials, and 24-hour on-call assistance if needed. Bear Creek desires to facilitate a meaningful homestay experience for the host family and the international student.

Morning Bus RouteThe shuttle service between campuses will continue next year but we are considering offering two separate residential routes. The first, repeating the Kirkland service we have provided this year and the second, repeating the service on the Sammamish Plateau which we’ve run in prior years. We need to have at least 15 confirmed riders on each route and would prefer 20 per bus. Costs will be split equally between the numbers of riders. (15 riders @ $500 or 20 @$400) We must have commitments for both Kirkland and the Plateau by July 15 to make arrangements for drivers.

If you are interested in bus service, please email Kelly Saulsbury at [email protected] prior to July 15, so we can establish drivers and confirm costs before we finalize the services on August 1.

College Advising Advice for the Class of 2009

Visit, visit, visit – take every • opportunity to visit different types of campuses to find out what you do (and don’t) like; For summer visits, contact the • Admissions Office to arrange a tour, a meal in the dining hall, (maybe) a visit to a summer class, or an appointment with a professor or coach; for visits when school is in traditional session, contact Admissions or contact someone you know at the school; As your “likely-to-apply” list • begins to take shape, start a filing system to keep things organized, include school information, application requirements, deadlines, etc; Your “likely-to-apply” list should • include at least one in-state school and at least one school whose academic requirements you comfortably fit (this is a nice way of saying your absolutely confident that you’re academically qualified!); As a frame of reference, remember • that the Class of 2008 applied to an average of 5.4 schools per student – anything less than three applications is fairly limiting, anything above ten applications can get fairly cumbersome – depending on the student, applying to between six and eight schools is fairly reasonable; Begin thinking about two • elements of your application: your activities/honors and your essay (check applications for sample essay questions); Plan for the fall SATs, SAT IIs (if • necessary), and ACTs – consult your fall sports coaches or directors for possible conflicts; Do • not get caught up in where others are looking or planning to apply – this is your decision;

The College Advising office • will be available throughout the summer for student and/or parent appointments; contact Blake DeYoung ([email protected]) to schedule.

What to Expect When You Return in the Fall

Use your “Essential Guide” • handbook to help you through the process – that’s what it’s there for!Expect to be asked you where • you’ve visited and to which schools you’re considering applying; Icebreaker• will involve senior breakout sessions to discuss both senior leadership and College Advising; In late September (probably • September 20 or 27), we will hold a college essay workshop for students in the morning and a parent meeting in the afternoon – both these meetings are highly recommended for their respective audiences; Have an organized system (file • box, notebooks, whatever works for you) in place by October to keep track of your various applications and deadlines; Early Action or Early Decision • deadlines begin appearing as early as October 1 and most have passed by December 1 at the latest; if you are highly drawn to one school in particular and want to apply under their Early program, be sure you know the deadlines; You will want to begin asking • teachers if they are willing to write letters of recommendation by October – our teachers are wonderful and willing to help, but these letters can take a long time so ask early; Expect to have at least four • completed applications submitted to schools by the turn of the calendar year.

Whopping Cough Cases Increase

The Healthy Times The Bear Creek School

Health Room

June 2008 Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a contagious respiratory tract infection caused by the

Pertussis bacterium. It is known as whooping cough because patients experience

repetitive coughing spasms, which causes an inability to take a breath. When the

spasm stops they tend to make a whooping noise as they try to catch their breath.

Pertussis is a vaccine preventable disease. After the introduction of the vaccine in

1941 the number of reported cases in the US dropped dramatically to an all time low

of 1,010 in 1976, but by 2005 the CDC was reporting more than 25,000 cases per

year, with 1047 of those in WA State. Cases are being seen in babies and children

who have not had their course of vaccinations completed, people who have never been

vaccinated or in adolescents and adults whose immunity has waned.

Pertussis lives in the saliva in the mouth and throat, and in the mucous in the nose of

an infected person. It is spread by droplets in the air when people who have Pertussis

cough and sneeze. The infection normally manifests itself in the same way as a cold

with sneezing, runny nose, slight fever with a non productive cough. However, the

cough becomes progressively worse over a two week period and can last for up to two

months. The coughing spasms are often followed by vomiting and periods of

exhaustion. Complications of the infection can be serious and include Hypoxia (oxygen

deficiency in the body), pneumonia, seizures, encephalopathy (disease of the brain)

and even death in young children.

Whooping cough is treated at home with antibiotics, but hospitalization is often

required for infants. Pertussis is a preventable infection through vaccinations. A

series of 5 shots (DTaP) are given to children starting at two months with the 5th

shot before starting school. Protection against Pertussis from vaccination usually

wanes between 5-10 years of the last vaccination, so it is recommended that

adolescents receive a booster before entering middle school, and adult receive a

booster especially those who have regular contact with children under 12 months. For

more information on Whooping cough and the available vaccinations take a look at

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pertussis/in-short-both.htm.

Health Room Requests

Please submit your summer packet forms by Friday, June 13. All additional medical forms including daily and emergency medication administration forms need to be submitted before the first day of school.

Log onto to www.tbcs.org and check out our health services section under members only. Please sign up for our Health Alerts, they will notify you of health issues that we are currently experience in the school and/or local community.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Q. What do people with

Pertussis like to drink?

A. Cough-ie

Did you Know…

...Pertussis was first discovered in 1906. It was found by 2 French bacteriologists Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou who identified the Pertussis bacterium which causes whooping cough.

Masquerade in Venice

Our annual auction is the second largest fundraiser at The Bear Creek School. Last year’s revenue set a

record - $284,000 net including over $65,000 to replace the aging computer labs and outdated furniture.

The auction committee has plans for another festive, fun evening at the Westin on March 14 and look

forward to a gourmet Italian dinner. We hope you will join us in the planning, procuring and celebrating.

Some Tips on How to Procure Your Auction Item

Each family is encouraged and expected to procure an item with a fair market value of $150. Procuring

does not mean purchasing but rather generating. Unless you are so inclined, you need not purchase

items to donate to the auction.

The Basics of Procuring

Keep your Auction Procurement Forms ready. Always be sure to put your name in the Solicitor box so you get credit for procuring the item.

When you patronize a business, especially one you use regularly, ask them to donate. Think broadly and consult the Wish List on the back of this sheet. Take a friend and go procuring – it’s fun.

Be ready to tell them about The Bear Creek School – who we are and what we do.

While items of all sorts are welcome, items and experiences that are unique or cannot be purchased readily on the open market are top sellers.

Ask for more than you expect to get. For example, ask for dinner for six. If you get dinner for four, that’s great.

Be sure you, as the solicitor, and the donor both fill out the procurement form completely. That saves lots of phone calls from the Auction Office to get the details.

If you wish to send a request by mail, download and sign the letter available on the website.

If you have a great contact and want a custom letter mailed or faxed to a business, just ask. Be sure to indicate your name and phone number, the name of the business, contact person at the business, their address, phone and fax, if you are asking for something specific, provide as many details as possible.

What if they say “No”?

Sometimes they do; don’t take it personally.

Sometimes they say all their donations are gone for the year – that would be 2008. Say you will come back after January 1, 2009. Do ask if they have any deadlines or make donation decisions only once or twice a year.
