CAMPERSHIP ASSOCIATION SPRING 2019 “HELPING MAKE EVERY SCOUT A CAMPER” Since 1986
A BSA WHITNEY M. YOUNG Jr. SERVICE AWARD Recognized Organization

2019 CAMPERSHIPS BEING AWARDED
Our camperships for the coming
2019 summer season have begun to be
awarded. Scouts and their Unit leaders
receive a letter from the Jack Kohler-
Suanhacky Campership Association
notifying them of the camperships and
the amount they will be. This is the 33rd summer season
we have awarded camperships for Queens Scouts. Since
the summer of 1986, we have awarded more than 1200
camperships to Scouts (and the past 10 years have
included Cubs) to attend Ten Mile River or Alpine Cub
World. Many of these awardees have gone on to be
camp staff members, scout leaders, community leaders
and well-rounded citizens. We could not do it without the
support of you, our members and friends.
THANK YOU, MEMBERS!
For 2 years in a row we have had 100%
membership renewals. With over 125 Member Families
this is an accomplishment that we all should be proud
of, being few other groups can make such a claim.
The vast
majority of our
membership enjoy
’Lifetime’ status,
while many others
prefer to do the 3
years for $25, and others 1 year for $10. Any way you
have your membership with us, we appreciate all our
members. You can all be happy to claim you’re in the
100% Club. In fact, we ask you to feel free to ask others
to join our organization to help us continue to do our
Good Deeds.
As a reminder, to join our organization:
Membership in the association is open to all. There is no
age, sex, any membership restrictions at all.
No Scouting affiliation is required for membership in the
Association, just a belief in the Scout principles, Oath
And Law. Membership is by individual and/or family.
Membership is $10 per year, or $25 for a three-year
term or $150 for lifetime. More than 95% of the
funding goes directly into the campership fund, with the
balance used for expenses.
LET’S GET READY TO PARTY…

KOHLER-SUANHACKY TO
DONATE TWO NEW 4-MAN
CABINS AT TEN MILE RIVER
Last summer, TMR
experimented with some new 4 man
cabins at camp, to see if they would be a good
alternative to canvass tents. The lifetime of a tent
versus the lifetime of a wooden cabin, the viability of
cabins, how they would enhance the camp experience
were all taken into account. By all counts, it looks like
the experiment had many positive sides to it.
In our last newsletter, we had mentioned how
we would like to help Council in the efforts to help
improve the camp experience and the cabin project and
donated the funding for two new cabins at TMR. Our
offer was gladly accepted.
Council granted us the naming rights for these
cabins that we are underwriting and we are pleased to
announce what they will be. We will have one of the
new cabins erected in Camp Aquehonga, and will be
named ‘GORDON BENNETT CABIN’. The other cabin will
be constructed in Camp Keowa and will be named
‘SUANHACKY NO-NAMES CABIN’. If all goes as planned,
we will dedicate these cabins on the Kinteycoying
Lodge May weekend at TMR.
We truly hope that these cabins will stand for
years to come and will allow many scouts to have a
great appreciation of TMR and all it offers.
MEMBER HONORED
We are proud to announce that Association Life
Time member Bob Natt was honored with induction
into the Camping Hall of Fame. Bob camped at Camp
Nianque from 1960-1963 and was a CIT at TMR for the
summer of 1964.
Bob is an Eagle Scout
who grew up in the Far
Rockaway District of Queens
Council and has graciously
underwritten the refurbishment
of the Ranachqua Dining Hall
which will include a new roof,
new layout, expanded service
and programmatic capacity,
equipping a modernized Camp
Ranachqua to better serve our future scout campers.
Many years back, Bob happened by Keowa on a Friday
evening of Memorial Day weekend, during a Suanhacky
Lodge Ordeal. We were still doing our annual barbecues
then. Perhaps it was our mouthwatering burgers, jovial
personalities, or his love of TMR, but Bob became a
lifetime member on the spot and has been a supporter
of ours ever since. Congratulations Bob and thanks
for Helping to Make Every Scout A Camper.
AMAZON-SMILE While some in Queens were split on Amazon
coming to Queens, we were happy to receive the
monies donated by the
organization via their
‘Smile” program. Anytime
you make a purchase on Amazon please consider using

Suanhacky Campership Association receives a donation

eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the Association.

you when you generate your donation. So please keep
our Association in your thoughts when purchasing at
Amazon. It’s a great way to help us out at no additional
cost to you.
BOB NATT
Since our last newsletter, we have lost three
very hard working, dedicated members, who went far
above and beyond in service to our organization and
Scouting.
RALPH DeFALCO: Perhaps the longest
serving Scoutmaster in the history of Queens
Council with Troop 17. Ralph joined Scouting
as a young boy and stayed with the program ever since.
He was a fixture with his unit at TMR every summer,
making sure his Scouts got the most out of the
program.
In addition, he would take Scouts from his unit
and other units from Queens on ‘Long Trips’, across the
country on the Troop bus, “Big Blue. One year to Florida
Sea Base, one year to the Rocky Mountains, one year to
the Grand Canyon, one year to the Black Hills… His list
of achievements and those he guided towards Eagle is
endless.
Ralph was a recipient of our Associations
‘Outstanding
Scouter Award
of Excellence’
and our
Lifetime
Achievement,
along with
many awards
from the
council and
district over his
tenure. He will
be missed by
many, forever.
JOHN PRITCHARD: A Scouter’s
Scouter. John shied away from honors and
awards and preferred to get things done
without fanfare. In the OA he served as Chapter Advisor
and Lodge Advisor. He implemented many programs to
help grow the lodge and expand the experiences of its
members. Aside from attending numerous NOACS, he
also attended the OA Service Corp campaigns.
John was a member of our Board of Directors,
and a recipient of our ‘Outstanding Scouter Award of
Excellence’. He did our annual calendar fund raiser
program as well as participated in selection of our
NOAC Scholarship recipients.
(Continued next column)
John oversaw the creation of the Suanhacky
Trade-o-ree, the NOAC lodge contingent trips, credit
card like membership cards and many other
innovations for the betterment of the lodge.
He had been Scoutmaster of Troop 70 which
was to him the most important position and rewarding
one. John also served on the TMR Museum committee,
Council Advancement and others.
May he rest in
peace.
MONICA EVANS: A true Scouter
spouse. She would join
her (late) husband Tom on many
Scouting functions and events,
including NOAC, OA Ordeals and
more. She was part of our Kohler
Cooking crew for our barbecues
and she along with Tom created our ‘Kohler-Kon’ fund
raiser ‘yard sales’ that we ran for a number of years.
Always smiling, always cheerful, she truly was a ‘Wild
Irish Rose’.
GOOD AND WELFARE
• We all mourn the loss of member
and Scouting legend, Ralph
DeFalco.
• Wedding bells ring for member
Anthony Lectora on his marriage.
• Hope to you back on your feet and
the dance floor soon, member
Greg Hofer.
• Good luck and farewell to Tom Pendelton who
leaves GNYC (Camping Director) and starts
at the National office as Coordinator for all
National Camping Schools.
• We welcome new Lifetime Members: Patrick
Mendola and Bill Keirnen.
• We were saddened to learn of the sudden
passing of member Monica Evans.
• We were quite upset on learning of the
passing of member John Pritchard, a
member of our Board and great Scouter.
If you have something to share with our members, please let
us know so we can spread the word.
