The May meeting was held on the Saturday before Mother’s day and atten-dance was fairly light. We had a presentation on touching up and covering upproblems in the finish on your pieces by Al Reisz, who does this for a living. He sure killed a few wives’ tales about finishing for me. We will probably doanother workshop with Al in the future. On a very sad note, we lost a Master Craftsman on April 30. Reidar Klemet-sen was one of the founding members of this club and a great friend to all. He was recently diagnosed with cancer and his heart didn’t take it well. Here’s hoping that he’s making shavings in a special place today. I made a presentation for a “student membership” to the membership and re-ceived a motion to carry it forth to a vote. The proposal will be advertised in two newsletters and at two meetings before being brought up for a vote in July. Please consider this as an avenue to bring some young blood into the organization.

Charlie Kragle has a new version of the Re-source Directory available. It will be sent via electronic media unless a member re-quests a hard copy. Hard copies will cost us about a buck, so take it by e-mail, store it on your desktop and use when necessary. I’m working on a version of a threading jig similar to Bonnie Klein’s product. I’ll pro-vide you with plans and specifications when it’s ready to make shavings. We’ll have a bandsaw workshop when we gather at the senior center in August. I’ve been working on this one for a while and I’ll have some great info and tips for you. Craft supplies have a deal where they will

Our May meeting began at 9:59 a.m. and let us begin bywelcoming aboard new members Rob Rosen and Chris Menendez who just signed up as of this meeting. It very much saddens us to have to report that Reidar Klemsten has passed away. Our heartfelt support and condolences go out to his family. Those of us who knew Reidar will remember him as a superb craftsman, and when it came to raffles, the luckiest man in creation. He always managed to win something, even if he bought only one ticket. He will be missed. Our website has now been in operation for six months. We are still working to improve it, and it will have a newlook in 2-3 months. The folks at AAW tell us that we have the second largest links section of any club out there. We still need more turning tips for the tips column. Remember there will be a $100 gift certificate for best tipat the end of the year plus another $100 gift certificate chosen by lot from all tips submitted. These must be your tips alone, and not copied from some magazine or other source. In addition to tips, we also need volunteer demonstrators for upcoming meetings. The WYES auction is in October. It's a great opportu-nity to get your work noticed (and, incidentally to get the club noticed). You need to submit by July 19th if you want to be in their color brochure. The Woodturners' Catalog (Craft Supplies) has worked out a new deal with us. They will grant us 1 gift certifi-cate per month. Also, they have a new club order pro-gram whereby if we as a club place an order for $1000 ormore total, they will re-price the individual items at a discount. We can either accept or reject the price on the individual items. Phil Coghill and O.B. Lacoste have formed a new club in Lafayette. The Acadiana Woodturners are now a go-ing concern. We are trying to put together a mentoring program for the club, whereby the more experienced members will teach the less experienced ones, one-on-one. However, before we proceed we need to get some legal questions answered, having mostly to do with liability and insur-ance coverage. We'll keep you posted. We officially put a motion in play to amend our by-lawsto permit student memberships for those 13-18. The offi-cial details will be in the June issue of the Skew. By law,we must announce the measure twice before it can be of-ficially voted on. That means we'll likely vote on the measure at our July meeting.
do a “club order” for orders values at over $1000. It has to be an order of at least $1000, paid by one form of payment and shipped to one address. Put an order to-gether, send it to them and they will re-price it and let you know how much you’ll save. I’ll play point man for this one and try for an order in July. Phil Coghill, O.B. Lacoste and a few others have formedthe Acadian Woodturners in the Lafayette area. We wishthem well and will support this new club as they get to making shavings Cajun style. We have offered to create a page on our Website for them to get the lathe turning. In June we will be in Bush at Joel Blazek’s place (near the site of our annual pig roast). Joel will serve a lunch and he’s got lots of room, plenty of wood, a lathe and some woodturners. What else do you need for a good time? See you there. Eddie Castelin, President, Bayou Woodturners

We are still working on a chain saw workshop for a future meeting. The folks from Stihl say they can't do the workshop right now, as this is their busy time of year. We meet next month in Bush, Louisiana, and since it's a little out of the way, I'm told a lunch will be pro-vided. We may meet at Acadian Hardwoods in July, but that is not yet certain. We'll meet at the Senior Center again in August. We're going to start taking photos for the annual cal-endar competition starting next month. The actual judging of the photos will likely take place in August. We select the last entry (the Christmas ornament) in October. Remember you can submit up to three entries (although only one will be chosen). There'll be entry forms available at our next meeting. Steve, Dale Campo's metalworker friend still has wood for sale at bargain prices. If you're interested, contact Dale. Klingspor (the sanding catalog people have temporar-ily (we hope) suspended their discount with us -- some-thing to do with out-of-date or incomplete club rosters. We'll let you know when the discount is back on. The business portion of the meeting concluded at 10:51 Dennis Wall Secretary

The directions are pretty straightforward from New Orleans, Slidell and Hammond they all bring you to the in-tersection of I-12 and N Causeway. N Causeway turns into US 190 W headed to Covington. As you pass Wendy’s on your right you veer to the right to US 190 Business W (you do not go over the bridge) you will goabout 3 blocks stay in right lane (you pass Walgreen’s, Rouses, and McDonalds) at the light you veer to the right to LA-21 towards Bogalusa, but don’t take a right to Abita Springs. You stay on LA21 for about 9.8 miles. You will see on your right a sign that says Waldheim fire tower, on your left you will see the entrance to our subdivision Grande Hills Estates. I will have signs at the Waldheim fire tower and in the subdivision that will have BW with arrows indicating where to turn. Our house is at the end of Affirmed, a blue Arcadian on the right with a lake in the back of the house. We will meet in the barn to the right of the house. If anyone gets lost they can call us at 985-871-9088 and we will send the search parties. If you have any questions about these instructions give me a call at work 504-279-8253 or at home in Chal-mette 504-277-1541.

I have found a dealer in Canada for the Supernova. I have bought, not received yet, a complete supernova kit with 2" jaw set, woodworm screw, adapter, spanner wrench, 1" jaw set, 45mm spigot jaw set, drive spur, powergrip jaw set and spare kit of fasteners and tools for $305.00 plus 25 S&H. I found this on ebay and it led me to the website www.kmstools.com Take a look at the site when I priced it out at woodcrafters I saved about $180.00 for the package. Pass it on to anyone considering a supernova. The site has some good links to Euro-pean and Aussie websites. Joel Blazek

Homemade Threading Jig by Eddie Castelin
I wanted to add something to a few turnings I have made this year. I thought threads would be a nice item for jars and containers not to mention a few special projects I had in mind for Lathezilla. I looked into thread chasers and decided that there had to be a better way. Charlie Kragle happened to ask me if I could make a jig like Bonnie Klein had for adding threads. I looked at a few photos and then the videotape and went to the shop. Theresulting prototype is what came out of a few hours in the shop. I started with a cross slide I purchased for Lathezilla, it’sa vital part of an ornamental lathe and some sort of slide was needed for moving the piece for threading. I then created a block to fit the slide to hold the ¾ - 16 all thread rods for the advancement screw. I added a ¾ - 16 to 1” – 8 adapters to hold the chuck I was going to use. Iwent with the ¾ - 16 because you have to be able to adapt to the chuck you’re going to use and this is the most common. I originally tried 8 TPI but found it to be too coarse for my needs. Then there’s the cutter, it’s from MSC and it’s the same one Bonnie Klein uses in her device. I hold it in a drill chuck with a draw rod pulling it into the Morse taper. I’m looking for a collet and nut to change that attachment. Now if you’ve ventured this far and are ready to make threads, do as I did, wing it! I use two chucks so I don’t have to move wood around. I waste off the top and put it in another chuck. Then I turn a shoulder on the bot-tom, about ¼” X ¼”, and hollow out the insides leaving about 1/8” behind the shoulder. Pull it off the lathe and put it on the side. Take the other chuck, with the top in it, mount it and turn the top true. Take your caliper and check the shoulder on the bottom, subtract .087” from it and this is the shoulder in the top. Create your shoulder, hollow the top and sand the inside and the face, this is your last chance to touch this part on the lathe. Then wipe on a layer of thin super glue to the shoulder getting threads to strengthen it. Pull it off the lathe and get ready to thread. Mount the drill chuck but not the cutter, tighten the drawrod and then install the cross slide on your bed. Install the adapter and the chuck with the bottom in it. Now

install the cutter, which is razor sharp and that’s why you waited. Bring the wood up to the cutter and make contact with the inside edge, back it off about one turn and then move the cutter into the wood about .035” (3/4 turn) with the adjuster on the cross slide. Start your lathe and bring the speed up to about 3000 rpm. Turn the advancement knob until you cut about 4-5 complete threads on the outside of the jar. Shut off the machine and move advancement screw to take the wood away from the cutter. Do not use the cross slide to move wood once you start cut-ting threads. Now mount the top piece and do the same thing you did for the bottom. Make a cut at .035 and then check the top for fit. Do not move the cross slide ad-justment that moves the wood from left to right. This is set for threads and you’ll really mess up mov-ing that knob. If the threads are okay, you’ve done it. Fit the bottom and check for grain alignment. To move the grain you have to reduce the leading edge of the jar top until the grain aligns. You should have 6-7 threads in the top so you can make this adjust-ment. When you get the right thread fit and grain align-ment, put the bottom back in your lathe, dress up the outside and apply the finish. It took two samples for me to get the hang of it, but once I did I had fun with the parts and pieces. I have a copy of the Bonnie Klein video and will loan it to interested woodturners.
