Principal’s NewsWelcome back to Term 4I trust all of our families had a happy and safe spring holiday, despite the rainy days. Thank you to the Neutral Bay school community for the warm welcome I have received since commencing on Monday. It is a privilege to lead a school recognised for achieving academic excellence and for providing a wealth of opportunities to develop students’ talents and interests.

As a Department of Education Principal for the past 10 years I pride myself on leading dynamic school communities that are inclusive, promote successful learning and are future-focused. I look forward to working with our exceptional students, professional staff and active parent community providing educational leadership for all.

Throughout this week I I have been visiting classrooms and have already seen students calmly settled, busy learning and excited to be back to school. Term 4 will be a very eventful and rewarding term for our students and I look forward to celebrating their many successes that culminate at the end of this year.

This week teachers will send home a Term Overview to provide information on activities occurring in the classroom. A Term Calendar is also included in the Newsletter and available on our school website.

We warmly welcome our new student who commenced this week in Kindergarten and his family to Neutral Bay Public School.

We would also like to send Mrs Emma Butler our best wishes for the impending birth of her baby.

Tell Them From Me SurveyThank you for your time in completing the Tell Them From Me Parent survey last term. We are in the process of analysing the information and will report the findings later in the term.

Butterfly FoundationNeutral Bay will be hosting a parent presentation by the Butterfly Foundation on Wednesday 24 October from 6.00pm – 7:30pm and all parents and carers are encouraged to attend.

Body image is consistently reported as one of the top three concerns for boys and girls. With increasing media and social media attention on appearance and diet, it can be difficult for parents to know how to support children as they move through childhood into the teenage years. This parent workshop aims to empower parents so they feel better equipped to help their child to develop and maintain self and body confidence.

The parent workshop seeks to answer the following questions:

• Why is developing a healthy body image important?

• What influences my child’s body esteem?

• How should I respond if my child talks negatively about themselves or others?

• What should I do if my child is showing signs of unhealthy eating and exercise behaviour?

• How can I be a good role model?

• Where can I access further information and support?

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to respond to any concerns about body image and build self-confidence through role modelling and a healthy relationship with food and exercise.

Please RSVP at the school office on 9953 1978 by Monday 22 October. For more information, you can visit https://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au or contact Ms Carnegie.

Thirty very excited Year 6 students are heading off to Moree next week on a five day overnight camp as part of our involvement in the City-Country Alliance. Teachers have planned a very busy week of events and look forward to sharing all the news on their return.

Participating students are asked to meet Ms Carnegie, Miss Chapple and Mr Brown at the seated area in front of Platform One (Grand Concourse) of Central Station no later than 8:45am on Monday 22 October. (Please see the photo below for our meeting place.)

We return on Friday 26 October at 4:40pm. Please ensure that you are at Platform One of Central Station to collect your child.

We ask parents to allow 30 minutes to find parking and to walk to the Grand Concourse as we are unable to hold the train to wait for students who arrive late.

A note will be sent home this week confirming these arrangements. If you have arranged another parent to transport your child, please complete the slip at the bottom of the note with the relevant details and return to Ms Carnegie by Friday 19 October.

Mrs J. Hudson - 2H Class TeacherMrs B. Herborn - KH Class Teacher

Kindergarten students are all very excited to be back at school for their final term of Kindergarten. Even being welcomed back by some rainy and unpredictable weather did not dampen our spirits. Please check your child’s blue folder for notes with information about the Kindergarten programs this term.

Imogen saw a giraffe. Andre enjoyed a scary movie.

Elsie watched the sunrise at a lighthouse.

Orion played soccer.

KH had many stories to share about their two week break. From play dates, outings to museums, gardens and zoos as well as family trips away, to spring cleaning, seeing the dentist, watching movies and keeping parents company at work. It was obvious that everyone has been very busy.

We enjoyed creating colourful artworks about our holidays using torn paper. We used Seesaw on the iPads to add a photo and voice recording or label about our holiday artwork. Here are some of our posts:

Kate looked at skeletons in the museum.

KH Holiday Recounts

When it was writing time we had so much to say in our holiday recounts that everyone wrote even more than usual, from a few sentences up to a few pages.

KH returned to school ready to dive straight in to their learning and we are looking forward to a fantastic term.

2H were excited to start Term 4. On Monday we used the application ‘Popplet’ to write a short summary of our holidays.

Miss A. Rice - 5A Class TeacherMrs E. Butler - 3B Class Teacher

Year 3 have started Term 4 rested and rejuvenated after the holidays. We began our English unit today on writing to the 5 senses. We tasted popcorn during our writing lessons and then used interesting adjectives to write about how to popcorn looked, tasted, smelt, sounded and felt.

A popcorn description by Gianna P 3B

The popcorn feels as bumpy and as rigid as a fragile, rocky mountain. It looks like a mini, edible cloud that is down on earth. The popcorn smells buttery and salty and reminds me what a cinema would smell like. When popping in the microwave, it sounds like a mini New Years Eve party with mini fireworks. It tastes buttery, salty and melts in your mouth!

In Year 5 we're exploring poetry during Term 4 as our writing focus. This exciting unit will be packed full of exploring different poetic styles. To kick off this unit and get us in the mood, we began with a suitably titled piece..."I can't write a poem".

The students of 5A thoroughly enjoyed telling Miss Rice all of the reasons they couldn't possibly produce a poem and in the process they produced some fantastic work!

Here we have the work of two students Kayla W and Jet G.
