Kindergarten Class Teachers Miss L. van Rhijn - 2V Class Teacher

Welcome to 2V! We hope you had a wonderful break and that you are ready for a fantastic 2018. Our first week in the classroom has gone by very quickly and we have had lots of fun. We especially liked getting to know our new classmates better with a few fun activities.

We spent a lot of time in Week One getting all our book covers coloured in. Here are some examples of our beautiful ‘All about Me’ covers. We hope you like them! We also started our Term 1 literacy text which is called ‘Zog’.

Keep up the great work Kindergarten!

All of our Kindergarten students have had a fantastic start to their first year at school. Every day is an adventure at the moment and the first few days have flown by. Everyone is getting to know one another and many new friendships have been made already.

Kindergarten students have been learning rules and routines for learning and playing. This week, our Kindergarten classes had their first walk to the big school to visit important places such as the Hall and the Library.

Stage News

Mrs N. Remenyi and Mrs L East - 5R Class Teacher

Year 3 students have had a great start to the new school year. We have been busy learning lots about each other through games, writing and maths activities and working with people we may not have worked with before. We are looking forward to a great year ahead!

Last week, 3T explored the idea of how we use our words and the effect they may have. Students used paper hearts to represent their feelings. We listened to the story ‘Chrysanthemum’. When a character in the story said something unkind, we wrinkled our hearts. When someone in the story said something kind, we tried to smooth them out. The main thing that the students took away from this exercise was… Before you speak, think and be smart! It’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart.

5R started the year thinking about words that described themselves. We used the descriptive words and wavy lines to create a piece of art. This art activity integrates visual arts and literacy. It is a great way to begin the year and we will display our work to help ensure student success.

Today 5R had their first Art lesson with Mrs East. We learnt about the 7 Elements of Art - Line, Shape, Colour, Texture, Form, Value and Space. We looked at famous artworks to see how each artist used the elements to create effect. We finished off by creating our own mini artworks illustrating each of the elements.

9Neutral Bay Public School - Term 1 Week 2

The Bay Times

P & C NewsHappy New Year to all the new & old families and a very warm welcome to a new exciting year at Neutral Bay Public School. The NBPS P&C Association has another busy and eventful year planned to support our School and the children.

Volunteers – We Need You in 2018!There are so many places you can help at our school. Whether once a week or once a year, everyone’s contribution is valuable and welcome! Below is a quick guide to some volunteering roles – if you’d like to help out in any capacity in 2018, please go to the link below and tick the relevant boxes. We’ll be in touch to let you know what to do next. https://goo.gl/rLD5gY

Year and Class Coordinator

Year coordinators are the main contact between the P&C and the parent body (via class coordinators) for school events. Each Year coordinator is responsible for working with the P&C Events Officer to organise one event during the year (e.g. Grandfriends’ Day or Mother’s Day Breakfast). These are well-supported roles that suit good communicators with regular access to email.

Class coordinator is a fun, easy role that suits anyone with an email.

Class coordinators work with their year coordinator and class teacher, helping to pull together social and fundraising events via class contact lists. They assist their teacher in contacting parents if help is needed in the classroom or on excursions, pass on information from the P&C, and maintain class contact lists. This a role that suits good communicators with regular access to email. We’d ask that all coordinators try to attend P&C meetings a couple of times a year.

New Family BuddiesNew families frequently join the school throughout the year but miss out on Term 1 orientation information. In 2018 we are introducing a ‘New Family Buddy’ (NFB) system. The year coordinator will let you know when a new family joins the school and your role is to simply make contact with the new family, welcome and answer questions, and provide a conduit to the school.

CanteenOur canteen turns out up to 450 healthy, fresh, home-made lunches a day, with a full-time manager, one part-time paid staff member and a team of 3-4

volunteer helpers each day. It’s fun, well run, and there’s no better place to find out what’s happening in the school. (And you get a free lunch.) Each class is allocated one week a year – you can find your week on the school website under the Canteen tab and links to the roster.

Canteen Contact: [email protected]

Uniform ShopThe uniform shop is a vital fundraiser for the school as we are able to transfer all profits to school programmes. The shop is always looking for more helpers, particularly to help fill daily Flexi-Schools orders: even one shift a term makes a difference.

Uniform Shop Contact: [email protected]

Events and Fundraising TeamEvery year, the P&C raises money for the school, to fund Music and Science programs as well as requested items such as literacy materials, playground equipment and computers. Funding comes from Voluntary Contribution payments, Uniform shop proceeds and events throughout the school year. All contributions of time and energy gratefully received.

Events and Fundraising Contact: [email protected]

Band and Orchestra ProgramsNeutral Bay Public School offers three bands (Junior, Senior and Concert Band, from Year 3), each conducted by a professional bandmaster. There are also two string orchestras (NBPS Orchestra and Senior Chamber), open to children K-6. Both programs are co-ordinated by parent volunteers.

About your P & C

A message from the P & C President

The Neutral Bay Public School Parent’s & Citizen’s Association (P&C) is a school-based organisation consisting of parents, teachers and interested citizens. Our role is to foster an effective relationship between parents and the school, in order to maintain the best learning environment and community for children. Membership of the P&C is an excellent opportunity for you to have a say in, and enhance, our children’s educational environment. It is also a great way to keep up to date with key initiatives and activities at the school.

We warmly welcome all volunteers, as this is integral to the P&C’s focus on continuously improving our community, we can’t do it without you!

The Objectives of the P&C are to: • Promote the interests of our school, by bringing

parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation.

• Assist in providing facilities and equipment for our school, and to promote the recreation and welfare of the students at our school.

The P&C is responsible for a number of vital operations within the school including the Canteen, Uniform Shop, and Band and Orchestra music programmes, all maintained by parent volunteers. It is also the responsibility of our P&C Association to conduct the election of parent representatives for the school Council, and to administer the class parent representative system (Class and Year Coordinators). The P&C runs a number of extremely popular events throughout the year, generously supported by our parent body and local community. This year, the very much anticipated School Carnival will be held on Saturday 22 September.

Our P&C is an incorporation member of the Federation of P&C Associations and abides by the rules and guidelines of this body. A copy of the P&C constitution can be viewed on the school website.

Getting involvedThe best way for the P&C to achieve our objectives is to encourage as many members of the Neutral Bay Public school community as possible to participate in our functions. We warmly encourage all families to attend P&C Association meetings, become a member

of the P&C, or simply take part in one (or more) of our activities. We are a welcoming and passionate group who are always on the lookout for new people to get involved. Parents are also encouraged to pay the P&C voluntary contribution, which is used to support educational and community initiatives within the school. We welcome any contribution you have the time and energy to offer!

The P&C meets on Wednesday twice a term at 7:30pm in the music room. Meetings provide a forum for discussion of all matters relating to initiatives and activities of the P&C. There is a P&C membership fee of $10 per year. Being a member entitled parents to vote on issues raised at P&C meetings and to hold positions on the P&C. All P&C positions fall vacant at the Annual General Meeting, which is held in November each year.

Where does the P&C gets its funding?

The P&C receives it funds from a variety of sources during each financial year. One of the most important sources is the P&C Voluntary Contribution. The P&C also receives profits from the Uniform Shop and the remaining funds come from various activities and events, including the school Carnival, school raffle, sponsorship, community advertising and other major events.

How are the funds used? The P&C provides valuable additional resources to our school to supplement the funding received from the NSW Government. As our student numbers have increased, this fundraising function has become increasingly important. Over recent years, the P&C has used its funds to:

• pay contributions for the school’s specialist science and music programmes;

• contribute to classroom resources such as iPads, books and other essential learning materials;

• purchase playground equipment;

• upgrade wireless access throughout the entire school;

• installation and purchase of air conditioning units; and

• host events that encourage social interaction and friendship within the Neutral Bay Public School community, including the P&C Welcome drinks, Twilight and End of Year picnics.

Code of conductAll of the P&C office bearers and parents who help out at the School (except for the employees of the Canteen) are all volunteers. There is a Code of Conduct (copy available on the P&C Website) which was resolved and implemented by the P&C in 2012 applies to all volunteers, members and employees of the P&C Association. The Code of Conduct is based on the following fundamental ethical principles:

• tolerance of the views held by others which are different from your own

• courtesy and responsiveness in dealing with others

• not discriminating on grounds such as gender, sexual orientation, race, ability, cultural background, religious status, marital status, age or political conviction

• an awareness and respect for cultural difference

• engaging in rational debate allowing for alternative points of view to be expressed

• not engaging in behaviour that might reasonably be perceived as harassment, bullying or intimidation

Please contact me, or any of your P&C parent committee members, if you have any questions.

The contact details for the 2018 P&C committee can be found if you click here

I look forward to another happy and successful year for the students and wider community of NBPS.

Uniform Shop NewsUniform Shop News – EXCITING UPDATES

How do I order New Uniforms and when are they delivered?The ONLY method of purchasing new uniforms is through Flexischools: www.flexischools.com.au we do not do over the counter sales. We pack orders daily which are delivered to your child’s classroom within a day or two.

Exchanges and ReturnsDetails of the exchange/return process are included with deliveries. If we do not have the required information, we cannot refund or exchange your item/s, so please check these guidelines. All returned items must be unworn with tags still attached and we accept exchanges/returns up to 30 days after date of purchase.

Going GreenWe are no longer using plastic bags to pack new uniform orders. We are using white paper bags, which are much more friendly to our environment, and also much easier for deliveries. To further reduce our footprint, please feel free to return these bags to us (via the uniform shop box to the right of the main office window) and we will re-use them.

Lost PropertyEvery day there is so much lost property, especially jumpers, most of which is not claimed. We urge you to check the lost property stand in building B as soon as your child misplaces an item, else the items will be donated to the second hand uniform shop every Friday. Lunch boxes, drink bottles and other items will be discarded if not claimed within a few days.

No more lost Jumpers, thanks to RagTagd: https://www.ragtagd.com/

Avoid lost and found altogether! All new jumpers are now fitted with a ‘RagTag’. Here is how it works.

1. When you buy a new jumper, a tag which has a unique code is sewn into it, along with a number to send an SMS to

2. SMS to that number to activate your tag/pair it to your phone

3. If your child loses his or her jumper, and the jumper finds its way back to the lost property stand in Building B (which most jumpers do), the stand will

SMS you to let you know the jumper is there

Already have jumpers you wish to tag? Tags are available for just $5 each via Flexischools. Sew the tag into your child’s jumper, activate as above and you are all set!

First Second Hand Sale for 2018We will be hosting the first second hand sale for 2018 on Tuesday 13 February from 8:15am – 9:30am. Come along and stock up for 2018! Please bring small notes/coins and a reminder, we ONLY take cash for second hand sales.

Second Hand Uniform SalesIf you would like to request a second-hand item outside of our set sale dates, please email Eileen at [email protected]. Detail the item/s you would like, size, child’s name and class. Eileen will confirm the order to you, as well as payment details. A reminder that for second hand sales, we ONLY accept cash.

WE NEED YOU – Second-Hand Uniform ManagerEileen, our wonderful second-hand uniform manager, will be relocating overseas in March and as such, we are seeking someone new to join the team to co-ordinate second-hand sales.

You will help to manage second-hand sales a few times each term, as well as fill second-hand orders. The time commitment is just a little each week, but you will be playing a very valuable role for our school. If you are interested please contact Eileen at [email protected]

Second Hand DonationsWe welcome donations of washed, unstained uniforms (we do not accept hats or tights). Please place them in the uniform shop box next to the office window. Thank you!
