Container gardening allows any gardener the opportunity to grow plants and provides versatility in your garden. WHAT CAN YOU GROW IN A CONTAINER? Annuals, perennials, herbs, trees ands shrubs, vegetables, water plants, you name it. If it grows, chances are it will grow in a container. Container Gardening Choose Your Container Any container will do if you keep in mind the two most important things, size and drainage. Make sure your container is large enough to support the root system of your plants. Secondly, make sure it has excellent drainage holes. Special Tip: Do not add gravel to assist in drainage it will only add weight to your container. 1 Soil You will need a good quality soil-less potting mix (Remember, you can use them year after year). These mixes are what the professional use, you want the basic ingredients to be sphagnum peat moss, vermiculite, perlite, and some- times a small finely ground pine bark. Depending on the soil-less mix, you may want to add extra Pine Soil Conditioner to the mix (25-30% pine soil conditioner). Combine soil-less potting mix and Pine Soil Conditioner to make a nice growing medium. 2 Fertilizer Use a slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote for a slow all season feeding. Then, supplement additional feedings as needed with good old Miracle Gro, Fish Emulsion, or fertilizer of your choice. Feed as needed depending on what you’ll be growing in your containers. 3 Watering And here’s the real secret container gardening, make sure you have a good water wand. Reduce your water- ing time by half by adding Soil Moist to your soil-less mix. The tiny polymers absorb water, swelling to 200 times their original size, and as the soil-less mix becomes dry, the Soil Moist releases water back to the soil.
