There are two stories which speak of Davids character in how he showed respect to the dead. Memorial Day, or Grave Decora- on Day, began as an effort to give dignity to those who died in the Civil War. It was a tradion which started in the South by women who placed flowers on the graves of their fallen soldiers. Eventually, this became a naonal holiday. Today, we recog- nize all our military who have died. Sunday, we will look at 2 Samuel 21:1-14. This is an unusual story, and it may be difficult for us to understand in modern mes. David gave permission to have some of the men of the family of Saul killed and their bodies leſt unburied for a long me. While this may seem cruel, David was answering an issue required by the Lord. David was seeking to remedy Gods silence. David knew that God had withdrawn His presence. David had to correct an outstanding wrong. Saul had broken Israel s covenant with the Gibeonites by forcing genocide upon them. David had the men killed and their bodies exposed as a tesmony before the Lord. However, later on, David shows grace to one of the widows by giving proper burial to the men. Yet, he also provides respect to Saul by giving him proper burial as well. For our purposes, I am looking at this story and how David responded to Sauls death in terms of how God responds with revealing His presence. God requires more of us than patriosm. He wants us to remember those who have died by showing them respect. This is true for our soldiers and others as well. We should remem- ber the Holocaust and refuse to allow people to rewrite that part of history. We should remember the many Chrisans who are being killed around the world. Note From The Pastor

Dr. Glenn E. Robertson, Sr. Pastor

Congratulations to our graduating High School Seniors. We are proud of you. We pray for God to bless your coming years as you move on to new heights. Remember to remain in Christ, wherever you go. This Sunday is Memorial Day weekend. It is generally a time of patriotism. We will have some patriotic elements to our service. My message will continue the theme of experiencing God’s presence. Summer Kickoff

The youth summer kickoff will take place next Wednesday, May 29 at the Reese home: 5:30pm-8:30pm. We’ll have food, fun, and fellowship!

Share the Gospel

In this season, I feel a vital importance in compelling others to share their faith. Talk about it. Live it. Invite others into it. I read a book not too long ago that talked about what the author called the “fallacy of linearity.” That’s a bit of a mouth full, but basically it means we tend to assume a trend will continue. When I was at Baylor, our football team was great. We narrow-ly missed making the first ever NCAA Division 1 Football Playoff. In those years, Baylor always scored very quickly, often under a minute and a half per touchdown. One of my roommates, a Math major, would always shout within the first couple of minutes of the game, “At this rate, we’re going to win 280 to 0!” Of course, it was a joke based on the early scoring rate, but it’s a good example of the fallacy of linearity.

In present day America, we talk a lot about how the church is in decline. People don’t read their bibles anymore. Youth find their sports more important than their souls. These things may be true, but let’s call the fallacy of linearity what it really is—a fallacy, or a false way of understanding. Share your faith to change the trend, and quit acting like people younger than you will be the death of the church! In Acts 17, Paul addresses those who’ve yet to hear the Gospel and instead follow philoso-phies of the world. Some of them are fascinated by his words, and they believe. Paul didn’t take their past action or belief for reason to ignore witnessing to them. In fact, he was able to use their “unknown God” (vs. 23) as a way of pointing to the Lord. How can we reignite the church with the next generation? By sharing the Gospel!

Vacation Bible School. I asked what that was. After my mom gave me a brief description, she asked if I was interest-

ed and I said I was. I attended and really enjoyed it. That was the summer before I started the 5th grade.

Through the next several years, that church cultivated a relationship with me. I began attending Sunday School

and then worship. The church grew as San Antonio continued to expand to the north and northwest. But there were

several people there who did not let me “fall through a crack” and kept encouraging the “small, quiet boy who likes

music.” I heard the Gospel and learned the Scriptures. The people were genuine and friendly.

When I got my driver’s license, I actually did the opposite of what many teen-agers do: instead of becoming less

involved in church, I became more involved. Having the independence of not needing to request a ride, I could now

take myself (and usually my two younger sisters) to church activities.

While a senior in high school, a combination of family and personal crises began a journey that led me to call on

Jesus Christ as my Savior. The ministry of that church began to bear fruit.

I eventually made a profession of faith, was baptized, and “officially” joined the church. As I entered college I was

part of a group in the church that was discipled by a wonderful Christian lady. I joined the choir. The church began to

give me ministry opportunities and then leadership responsibilities. When I was a junior in college, I was asked to

substitute for the music director who was going to be gone for a month in the summer. I did. That led to me being the

part-time music director of the church. Eventually, in 1982, the Lord called me to the ministry. Wow.

Vacation Bible School. It can have a tremendous impact on a child. Whether or not you are able to serve in VBS,

please pray that God will use it for His glory and His kingdom.

Dear First Baptist Church, Thank you for the generous Eric Christopher Afflerbach Memorial Scholarship Fund. I am very pleased and appreciative to learn that I was selected as a recipient of this scholarship award. By awarding me this scholarship, you have reduced my financial burden, which allows me to focus on my school work and not worry so much about how I am going to pay for school. I hope that I will also be able to help struggling students reach their goals in higher education by assisting them the same way you are helping me. If there is anything that I could ever do in return for you or your business, I would be honored to do so. Thank you again! Sincerely, Ainsley Reeve
