His active schedule of commissions and premieres has included groups ranging from elementary schools to professional ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the United States Marine Band. As a conductor, Mr. Balmages enjoys engagements with numerous state and regional bands, orchestras, university groups, and professional bands. Lauderdale, Florida. He resides in Baltimore with his wife, Lisa and their sons, Jacob and Collin.

Rocky Mountain Romp is a salute to the rich traditions of the Rocky Mountain region with this Aaron Copland-style hoedown. Spirited melodies intertwine with engaging rhythms, evoking images of the West.

Victor López has worked as an educator/administrator with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools System for 35 years, having received a Doctor of Education degree from Florida International University. Among his many honors are “Miami-Dade County Public Schools Teacher of the Year” and the “State of Florida Teacher of the Year.” In addition to being the former lead trumpet player and arranger for the Miami Sound Machine, he has recorded and performed with various artists and has appeared in numerous music videos. He is in constant demand as a guest speaker, clinician, conductor, adjudicator, and composer across Australia, Canada, and the United States.

Andalucía has always been a very musical land and the unique music and exotic dances have inspired composers throughout history. This tradition continues with this inspired work, flavored by the colorfully-blended sounds of the flamenco march style.

Castle Gate, 1924Tyler S. Grant (1995)

John Moss was active nationwide as a composer, arranger, and orchestrator in a wide variety of musical styles and formats. As a composer, he had an extensive background creating original music for documentary, educational, and promotional films. As an arranger, he provided music for the Disney educational project "Magic Music Days," where young performing musicians are introduced to the film scoring and recording process. He accepted numerous school band and orchestra commissions, and enjoyed writing for the Detroit

Tyler S. Grant has written numerous award-winning works for concert band, marching band and chamber groups; many of which have been performed across the world. Tyler was commissioned by the prestigious Macy's Great American Marching Band to write Imagine Fanfare for the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Tyler is regularly invited across the country as a guest conductor for school districts and honor bands at all levels.

This dramatic work portrays the events in Castle Gate, Utah; a coal mining town that was rocked by a series of explosions in 1924. Grant’s music tells the epic story of disaster and also reflects the legend left behind by the miners.

school band and orchestra commissions, and enjoyed writing for the Detroit Symphony Pops, the Canadian Brass, and the Detroit Chamber Winds.

Regimental Honor opens with a majestic brass fanfare soon followed by the clarinets leading the way with the main theme. You can picture the regiment's flags and banners waving in the breeze as you listen to this stately march!

Michael Sweeney is currently Director of Band Publications for Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the largest publishers of printed music in the world. Since joining the company in 1982, Hal Leonard has published over 500 of his compositions and arrangements. Mr. Sweeney is a 1977 graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington), where he earned a bachelor's degree in music education. A winner of multiple ASCAP awards, Michael is also in demand as a clinician and conductor for honor bands and festivals. He resides north of Milwaukee where he enjoys fishing and playing the bodhrán.

The Forge of Vulcan features a relentless rhythmic drive that keeps hammering away at you! In the percussion section, metal trash cans evoke the memory of an ancient blacksmith!

Spontaneous CombustionRobert Sheldon (1954)

God of Our FathersClaude Thomas Smith (1932-1987)

Claude T. Smith was born in Monroe City, Missouri, receiving his undergraduate training at the University of Kansas. He also served as a member of the faculty of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, where he taught composition and theory and conducted the University Symphony Orchestra. Smith received numerous prestigious commissions including works for the U. S. Air Force Band, the "President's Own" U. S. Marine Band, the U. S. Navy Band, and the Army Field Band.

Daniel C. Roberts, the 35 year-old rector of a small Episcopal church in Brandon, Vermont, wanted a new hymn for his congregation to celebrate the American Centennial in 1876. Roberts, a veteran of the U.S. Civil war, wrote the lyrics to "God of Our Fathers" and his congregation sang it to the tune “Russian Hymn.” In 1892, organist George W. Warren wrote a new melody, creating the hymn as it is now known. The selection written by Claude T. Smith uses this famous melody.

Robert Sheldon received a Master of Fine Arts in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Florida. An internationally recognized clinician, Sheldon has conducted numerous regional and all-state honor bands throughout the United

E Pluribus RockumJerry Williams (1951-2001)

conducted numerous regional and all-state honor bands throughout the United States and abroad. The American School Band Directors Association has honored him with the Volkwein Award for composition and the Stanbury Award for Teaching, and the International Assembly of Phi Beta Mu honored him with the International Outstanding Bandmaster Award.

Spontaneous Combustion is a fast-paced tour-de-force; it explodes out of the starting blocks and keeps moving relentlessly to the last note. Presented in a minor key with shifting tonalities and tuneful melodies, this musical juggernaut eventually yields to a major key, which only amplifies its inherent energy.Mixed meters and bombastic percussion help to drive the piece to the very end.

Jerry’s first publication came in 1985 with his popular “Free Spirit Overture.” A very talented writer and musician, Jerry Williams has many best-selling titles in the Barnhouse Publications Catalog. He was also co-writer of the “Command Performance Band Book” and he has composed over 50 popular band compositions.

The title of this piece is based on the Latin phrase, “E pluribus unum,” (out of many, one) and describes the goal of this work, written in 1994. The driving rhythms and catchy melody help create a connection between the youngest and oldest musicians in our BCSC band program.

The first BCSC Band Festival took place in this very gymnasium on May 11, 1968, with Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Clarence E. Robbins noting, “We believe this to be a first in the field of public school music.” The band directors at that time, Elwyn D. Brown (Columbus Senior High), Van C. Boner (Central Junior High), and Willard Dutcher (elementary bands) began making preparations for the festival in 1967 as Burdell H. Sell, band director at Northside Junior High School, took on the task of finding a composer who would be willing to write a single piece playable by over 500 students of all grade levels.

The commission was accepted by Dr. Grant Beglarian (1927-2002). Dr. Beglarian, fluent in eight languages and a graduate of Michigan State University, had been a student of Aaron Copland at Tanglewood and had already composed music performed by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. During the commission process, Dr. Beglarian was the director of the Ford Foundation’s Contemporary Music Project, and would go on to become the Dean of Performing Arts at the University of Southern California, the President of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, and the Director of International Relations for ThinkQuest, an internet-based company dedicated to advancing education through technology.

“We believe this to be a first“We believe this to be a first“We believe this to be a first“We believe this to be a firstin the field of public school music.”in the field of public school music.”in the field of public school music.”in the field of public school music.”

Dr. Beglarian based his composition, “A Hymn for Our Times,” on the poem by James Russell Lowell, “Once to Every Man and Nation.”

Once to every man and nation,Comes the moment to decide,In the strife of truth with false-hood,For the good or evil side…

In describing the piece to the audience, Dr. Beglarian declared, “I know of no other work that uses the resources made available to me on this occasion,” and then solemnly reflected upon the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that had occurred just a month prior on April 4, “I chose the hymn in the first place for its special musical qualities. But soon the text assumed a significance that was both urgent and highly relevant to our times.”

On that night the 547 young musicians gave the world premiere of the fifteen-minute long composition, along with the audience singing the words to the hymn as the music reached a powerful conclusion. Following the applause the final measures were played again, including the singing by the audience.
