They are young, they are ima-ginative: Claus Lucas Letsch and

Katharina Nack are the conference management of BALMUN VI. The trouper and the new face. For Claus

it is the fourth conference in the confe-

rence Management, for Kathi the first. But as a team they work as one person. As the conference manager it will be

Claus’ last year.

That means: In the next year all this will be on Kathi’s responsibility. And we are pretty sure, she will make it

next year aswell!

After attending several conferen-ces some pupils of the Innerstädti-sches Gymnasium had the idea to bring Mun to the north of Germany. It all begun with 100 delegates which

debated about the main topic `Facing regional Challenges in a Globalized World`. At the end of the first confe-rence in Rostock in 2008, everybody knew that this was not the last BAL-MUN.The next year 2009 the delagates started “Building Bridges”.

For the next time we hoped to create the praised familiar atmosphere at BAL-MUN again. One year later we managed it, where the delegates were `Caring for Climate` and after that they were `De-signing Future Development Goals` in year 2011. Last year, we had our first anni-

versary, where the delegates had the chance to debate about `Sus-tainability and Equity: A Better Future for All`. During these successful conferences a

lot of new faces attended the Balmun

family. Now, we are glad to welcome you to the sixth annual BALMUN confe-rence in Rostock at the Innerstädtisches Gymnasium. Our Organisation Team did its best to maintain the high standard

of the last conferences, but this year we want to increase our efforts and create something new and special to make it unforgetable. This years main topic is “Frameworks for Freedom” and we are looking forward to great discussions, re-solutions and a familiar atmosphere for our international and national guests.Upcoming days we will welcome … delegates from over … coun-tries Balmun VI is getting bigger and international than ever since.

During the next few days you will get the chance to get to know peo-ple from all over the world, have great discussions on recent issues and of cause explore the beautiful harbor city that is holding the con-ference: Rostock right at the coast of the Baltic Sea. Have you ever heard of the summit in

Heiligendamm, the maritime Festival Hanse Sail, the soccer team Hansa Ros-tock or the ferry operator Scandlines? Those are all special features of the Hanseatic city Rostock. It is also known for its tasty local beer called Rosto-cker and the beach in Warnemünde. Although Rostock is the largest city of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schwerin has the status to be the fe-deral capital. During the next days you will realize its traditional character and should be looking forward to meet its easy-going and interesting inhabitants. After having an exhausting conference

day, the best thing you can do is to go downtown and explore several unique cafés or walk at the harbor. After having a snack you could walk down the long shopping street, buy some souvenirs or relax in the sun in front of the University of Rostock. While walking around you should not miss the “ Kröpeliner Tor “.

Welcome To The MostBeautiful City Ever

This building is one of the seven old city gates. At the other end of the shopping street there is the huge market place with the unmistakable pink town hall. If you need a little break, you can sit down near the fountain, that you find in the middle of the place. This artwork was a gift of the French. Let your eyes wander around and

you will see lots of typical nort-hern-German brick houses which make up the great character of the city. You will also find the inspring Gothic church “Marienkirche”.Another important sight of Rostock

is the beautiful port. You can easily walk there or just follow the call of the seagulls. The river Warnow , which flows through the port, offers a great view as well as a place for sailing and canoe sports. A re-ally quit spot, whe-re not too many people pass by, is at the end of the port behind the monu-ment of two sailors. If you need a mo-ment for preparing the conference and collecting thoughts you can sit down on

the stairs and enjoy the view.If you are not into sight-seeing or

getting to know the city, Rostock offers something in your interest as well. Many cafés, nice bars and restaurants are waiting for you. In the multicultural centre of the city,

the KTV, mostly young people of Ros-tock wake up at night and are looking forward to having fun, relaxing, dan-cing, enjoying good food, and so many

more different sounds and lights. You will get to know a very different side of the city. There is just one thing left to say, we

all hope that the weather won´t play us a prank! Have a great time, and once again: welcome to Rostock. For more information, please take

a look at the official website of the city of Rostock: www.rostock.de

The Baltic Herald: BALMUN VI! The MUN from Rostock has been well established, is bigger than ever and also a pattern for other UNO projects. How das it feel to be one of the creators of all this?Mrs. Koch: It is an awesome project

where you find so many different ac-tivities for everybody’s linking. I fear, BALMUN will exist until my retirement and maybe much longer.

The Baltic Herald: When you look at this year’s team: What is diffe-rent so the very first Baltic MUN – Team?Mrs. Koch: I think in “year one” all BAL-

MUN participants were in the higher grades, they were 18 and 19. Today we have the youngest team we ever had, the average is 16. That means more challenges, just because with 16 you maybe don’t really know, how many

things are important for such a great conference.

The Baltic Herald: Which new pro-blems might there be, or are al-ready there? And how do you deal with them?Mrs. Koch: In the beginning you always

look at the past conference and be over-whelmed, because it was so amazing. But soon you learn, that it isn’t that easy as it seems. It costs much motivation and energy, which you not always have. Anyhow, there is no reason to fear.

The Baltic Herald: Mr. Breitkopf, what motivated you tob e part of

experience of the last year. That this event makes pupils think such important issues.

The Baltic Herald: What is your per-sonal wish for BAL-MUN VI?Mr. Breitkopf: That it

all works as good as last year and that we make better, what was not that good. The Baltic Herald:

Do you sometimes doubt, that it will work?Mr. Breitkopf: No, at

no time.
