The logic of a 9-year-old!BY USER NAME: TWINKIE

Over dinner:ig Mickey: “Mom? I beenthinking a lot about this. And I think you reallyshould take the TV out ofour room.”

(Insert very surprised look here… ). Ever since they were wittle ittybitty babies they’ve ALWAYS had aTV in their room. In fact, theywouldn’t go to sleep without it atleast on with no volume in the back-ground.

Sort of a makeshift night light, ifyou will.

Oh sure, I’d get up and turn it offin the middle of the night but thenONE of them would wake up andturn it back on. ONE of them wasscared of the dark. This ONE is nowtelling me he wants the TV out of hisroom. This is a very interesting turnof events.

Could it be that he’s finally out-grown his fear? Could it be that mybaby is growing up? Could it be thathe’s maturing and no longer scaredof silly things like the boogyman?

ME: “Why?”(insert a very inter-ested-in-your-conversation lookhere).

Big Mickey: “Because Annequinalways wants to put it on HIS shows. And I would rather just have it OFFthan to watch his shows. So I’vethought about it a lot and decidedthe best compromise is to take it outof the room.”

ME: (No longer impressed andnow somewhat cynical). “Uh, so inother words, take the TV out. Youwin?”

Big Mickey: “EXACTLY!”I think further discussion needs

to go into this decision.

Why not put a happy face onanimal Humane Society ads?

nother holiday season, another so-sad-I’ll-start-crying-if-I’m-anywhere-near-PMS-time ad from the Humane Society of theUnited States. Their latest campaign fea-tures Wendie Malick at the plate, an actressI love dearly for her incredible comic timing

and charm. This rant has nothing to do with Ms. Malick and her

good-heartedness at helping out the HSUS. It also hasnothing to do with whether or not the HSUS is a goodand charitable organization or not, as I believe thatthey are one of the good guys at the forefront of thechanging face of animal welfare. This rant is about thesheer number of impressions of suffering animals theHSUS seems to want us to wade knee-deep through inan effort to part us from our money. And I say this assomeone who actually likes the organization.

Enough already with the seemingly endless paradeof sad, starved, wounded creatures in need of my(financial) support. One minute I’m watching somecool show about making my front yard the neighbor-hood masterpiece in less than three days, the nextminute — wham — I’m seconds away from being apuddle of goo over a shivering kitten or matted dog.And it’s not just me. I have friends who won’t evenopen the envelopes from the HSUS or several otheranimal agencies anymore. Not because they don’tbelieve in the mission, but because they can’t stand tolook at the abused creatures or read the heart wrench-ing stories. Rather than those images guilting myfriends into donating, they’ve accomplished the exact

opposite. They have shamedmy friends into tossing theappeals into the garbage, unseen and unanswered.

We know the realities ofabuse and neglect that occurwith companion animals.Even if we were somehowmagically, blissfully ignorant, there are at least four differ-ent shows on television, play-ing multiple times on a dailybasis, that can provide a crashcourse on the inhumanity ofhumans.

Can’t you just try some-thing a little different? How about rows of happy, healthy puppies and kittens, along with a message ofhow for only $10, 10 kittens were vaccinated againstdeadly diseases? Or a photo montage showing peoplewho adopted pets from the shelter, along with the mes-sage that donations allowed these pets to be vaccinat-ed, altered and housed until they met the loves of theirlife? Something that makes me want to join in the goodvibes going around from helping pets find foreverhomes, rather than reach for a tissue box and theremote control? Please?

Bakersfield Martial Arts instructorwas selected by the California Uni-fied Taekwondo Association to par-ticipate in a Cultural EnrichmentTour and be one of the first delega-tions to visit the Taekwondo Park

World Headquarters in Muju, Korea. FrancisEsposo of Han’s Taekwondo Academy inBakersfield was honored to be one of eightMasters selected for the visit. All expenseswere generously provided by the CaliforniaUnited Taekwondo Association (CUTA) andthe Los Angeles Korean Tourism Organiza-tion.

The 10-day excursion consisted of numer-ous tours on the peninsula, elegant dinnerswith governors and mayors, and comprehen-sive Forms, Sparring, and DemonstrationClinics at the Kukkiwon and Kiemyung Uni-versity. All Masters received diplomas andcertification from world renowned Grand-master Kyu Hyung Lee (1988 OlympicDemonstration Master) and the staff of thePresident of the World Taekwondo Federa-tion, Chungwon Choue. The highlight of thetrip, however, was the visit to Muju. Muju isthe region which was selected for the con-struction of the new Taekwondo Theme ParkFacility. Muju is known as the “natural”county, whereas the region prides them-selves as being far removed from city life. This region is also famous for their fireflyfestivals. The park will be 570 acres and spanacross nine valleys.

The CUTA group was the first to visit fromCalifornia and plans to bring one of the firstcompetition teams upon opening day in 2013.The Korean people are successfully usingTaekwondo as a tool to promote goodwill. It

is a necessary world attitude that should beshared with all individuals.

I am proud to have participated as anambassador of California, U.S.

Jakob Russell, #45, of the GEYFFreedom Freshmen football team, always goes the extra yard for histeam. This year Jakob could be seenrunning the football down the field, kicking off for his team, and blockingfor his teammates as they ran for theend zone. Jakob has been an inspira-tion and spirit-lifter for his team aswell. He’s the guy that you’d hear atthe end of practice and before thegames, getting his team psyched upand ready to play. Jakob is a leadertoday, and I am sure we will see himdoing the same for many years.
