Potable Tank Access Ladder systemunit commissions in Refinery Tanks

Joint Venture Directors WorkshopA Portable Tank Access Ladder (PTAL) system unit was successfully commissioned in Refinery Tanks during November 2016. Access to the top of Isocontainers containing Diesel Additive was identified as a high risk activity in the working at height risk assessment conducted across all areas of Bapco last year. The top of the Isocontainer has no edge protection presenting a potential fall hazard to the Operator, from a height of approximately 4 meters. Access is routinely required to remove customs seals, to open a vent valve to prevent vacuum formation during offloading and to gauge the tank contents to ensure that no product is returned to the consignor, as this could lead to expensive cleaning charges being incurred by Bapco. The PTAL is a free standing, mobile ladder access system designed to provide safe access to the top of Isocontainers and is a good example of work equipment offering collective fall protection. The unit comprises a counter balanced 4 wheeled base (2 fixed wheels fitted with foam filled tyres pressurised with air and 2 swivel wheels fitted with solid tyres), which supports a fixed and an adjustable height ladder that can be raised and lowered using a hand winch and cable system. At the top of the ladder is a hinged Aluminium access platform and fall protection guardrail enclosure, which is fitted with support feet and anti-fall out bars. The PTAL is an unbraked unit; when parked, it is prevented from moving using 4 wheel jacks. The PTAL was assembled by Ali A Majeed from Plant Maintenance District C, under the close supervision of Alain Tartaix - a Technician from Capital Safety, France, following which training was held at site for available shift staff. Once the unit had been commissioned, this allowed the removal of the temporary scaffolding access steps and work platform, which were used as a mitigation measure once the fall hazard had been identified through the working at height risk assessment process.

Bapco representatives recently attended a Joint Venture Directors workshop conducted by Water Street Partners and sponsored by the GCC Board Directors Institute (BDI). It was held at the global investment group Investcorp House’s headquarter in Manama. The workshop was entitled ‘JV Directorship: Global Best Practices Workshop.’ Topics covered during the workshop included:• Similarities and differences between corporate and JV directors• What is good JV governance?• What makes an effective JV director?• How can companies support their JV directors?• Useful tools for companies to assist JV directorsThe small group of attendees included JV directors and officials from Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Bapco was represented by Dwight Luter, the Legal Advisor and BLBOC Board and PC Secretary, and John Harrower, Manager of Business Development. They were presented with certificates by Mohammed Al Shroogi, Chairman of the GCC BDI and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Investcorp. Awali Golf Club was delighted to host the BH-UK 200 Open which was the 157th event out of 200 planned this year to mark the bicentenary of the start of relations between Bahrain and United Kingdom. There was a good turnout for this competition with 94 golfers teeing off throughout the day. The Awali course is known for its unpredictability due primarily to the renowned Awali ‘bounce’ but few fell victim to this unique phenomenon on this occasion. Overall winner, Mohamed Sultan Faraj was one of three players who finished with a net score of 64, however he claimed the top position with a gross score of 78. Previous week’s winner Nicky Park continued her good form by repeating her previous gross score of 89 but lost out to that week’s runner up Vidhu Mittal with a gross score of 81. Winner of the medal competition with the best gross score of 72 was Diab S Al Noaimi. There were three flights with Yeong Gul Kim taking 1st place in Flight 1 with a net 67, second place Ahmed Al Noaimi net 68. Flight 2 was won by Jasim Al Gatam with net 66 and runner up after count back was Ali Mohamed A Kowari with net 67. Flight 3 saw Nicky Park take the lead with a net 64 with Nevil Malao second net 67. Peter Doble from Qatar Golf Association bagged the prize for best score from the visiting with a net 68, while Phil Sadler led the field from the Royal Golf Club with net 74. Hendrik Wessels, Mick Shaw and C V Murthy collected prizes for being nearest the pin on holes 6, 14 and 4 respectively while Ali Danesh received the prize for the longest putt on hole 18. Bapco’s Good Idea scheme held an awarding ceremony on 18th October 2016 at the Instrument Shop of Maintenance Services Department. Four employees were awarded in recognition of their successful ideas.Manager MSD A. Redha Haqiqi thanked the employees for their active participation in the Good Idea Scheme and wished them all the best. Attended the presentation also were members of Operational Excellence Department and Good Idea team.Below is a brief about the winning ideas:

Limjoco, A.V and Khalid A. Rahman won BD940 for their idea titled “Replace HIS LCD power supply instead of buying complete LCD”. There were 44 HIS LCD monitors in LSDP which started to fail, one after another. The maintenance policy and normal practice is to replace the faulty LCD with a new one, which was set-up in stock. The faulty LCD monitor 080HIS012 was replaced with a new one, which cost BD3340. Instrument Maintenance could not replace the second faulty one as Procurement Department had faced difficulties in procuring new LCD monitors because of the failure trend, cost and ordering lead time. With these challenges, it would be very difficult to restore the functionality of the faulty system. The idea of replacing only the faulty component (power supply) was then initiated

after checking with the manufacture. The cost of the OEM power supply module is BD57 compared to the cost of the complete LCD monitor of BD3340. The faulty HIS LCD monitor was replaced with the repaired LCD as a trial and proved to be satisfactory. All other remaining faulty ones were successfully repaired. The following is a summary of the cost calculation: the total cost of replacing the faulty LCD as per Maintenance Policy is 44 x BD3340 = BD146,960 and the total Cost of Repair (Material) as per implementation of Good Idea is 44 x BD57 = BD2508. Hence, the idea total cost saving is equal to 146.960 – 2508 = BD144,452.

Ahmed Salman was awarded BD515 for his idea titled “Excavation from solar substations to the Security monitoring system”. Projects Department intended to carry out excavation work in order to run the solar fire alarm control cable from the Refinery car park substation to the security office, as it is required to be connected to Bapco main fire alarm system. The estimated proposed excavation work cost was BD14300. Ahmed Salman raised the idea of providing a telephone line at the substation and cancelling the idea of running a cable from the Refinery car park substation’s fire alarm panels to the Security office,

and this helped in avoiding the excavation work. The estimated proposed work cost of providing a telephone line was BD3000. However, it took quite a long time to arrange for the Batelco telephone line with telephone instrument for the Refinery car park solar installation. Ahmed Salman considered another solution which could help overcome the issue of providing the telephone line by suggesting the installation of a wireless telephone from Batelco. The idea had not been used and implemented before; however, it was agreed to install the suggested wireless technology in the substations and it has proven to be working well when it was checked and observed after a few months of installation. The estimated cost of the wireless was BD540. This solution by the idea of cancelling the excavation work made for a good return to the Company and its success saved the company BD13,960.P.M. Seth won BD150 for his idea “Modifying LSDP HP STRIPPER C7604 LP take off point of 076PDIT121” transmitter. #2H2 plant, C7604 stripper column 076PDIT121 transmitter was frequently reported failing and not working properly. The problem was investigated by instrument maintenance and it was found that the transmitter LP tapping was frequently getting choked due to the transmitter drain steam condensate. The transmitter top tapping was found to be horizontally mounted, and this found to be causing the line frequent blockages. The transmitter top take off tapping has been modified from Horizontal to Vertical (45 degree) as per the idea suggestion. The transmitter behaviour was observed since the idea was implemented in March 2016 and was found to be working in a satisfactory manner. The idea total cost saving is equal to BD3521.

Good Idea scheme awards the winners of MSD

Key IssuesDiscussed at

EHSC Meeting No. 95

Bapco’s EHS Committee held its monthly meeting for November. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Hafedh Al Qassab, General Manager Refining. The following issues were discussed:• There was one Lost Time Incident

(LTI) and two first aid Injuries in October 2016. The LTI to a contactor employee on 4th October has brought the total number of LTIs this year to 9, which is an unacceptable level of personal safety performance. All employees must maintain a sense of vulnerability by using all the available tools such as “4 Keys to Safety” and “Osool Bapco” to prevent all injuries to them and contractors.

• 28 Process Safety Incidents were recorded during October 2016, out of which none were classified as Tier 1 or Tier 2. There were no reliability clock resets during October 2016.

• There were 13 road traffic accidents during October 2016, 9 involving Bapco and 4 contractor drivers. YTD there have been 86 vehicle accidents compared to 97 at the same time last year. As highlighted previously, we must take extra precautions particularly around the Alba roundabout, due to the current major road works which has increased the potential risk of road traffic accidents.

• There were 1 unplanned and 2 planned flaring incidents during October 2016. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is currently at 5.05 vs a target of 7.0. The EPI has steadily improved recently, however we must focus on reducing unplanned flaring and oil spills to achieve the EPI target of 7.

• The EHSC reviewed the Q3 progress status of 2016 EHS Objectives and Targets. Although good progress is being made, several were running behind schedule and we need to ensure that we make all efforts to achieve these objectives on target, as agreed at the beginning of the year.

• The efforts being undertaken to segregate waste during HUB 1 were appreciated. The EHSC were informed that a waste segregation campaign is to be launched during December 2016 to segregate the general waste for recycling based on the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. All are encouraged to actively participate in this campaign.

Give Your Back A BreakMany of us do not realize how much we rely on our backs throughout the day. Most of us spend much of the day at our desks, either doing paper work or sitting in front of the computer. Sitting for long periods of time is actually a leading culprit in back pain. Since our backs help us engage in all types of activities, from carrying heavy objects to swinging a golf club, it’s important to take care of them. A healthy back is insurance against back-related medical expenses, loss of productivity, and inconveniences. To minimize your chances of developing back pain, always remember that it’s important to keep good posture while sitting. The lowest curve in the back, the lumbar curve, needs the most support. Here are a few tips that can help you take care of your back at the office.• Position the work surface slightly above your waist and

bring reading or work material up to eye level.• Keep your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest, and

evenly distribute your weight on both hips.• Slide your seat as close as possible underneath your desk

or workstation. This improves your posture by forcing

you to sit up straight rather than slouched over.

• Keep your arms supported when working at a computer.

• Use a swivel chair to avoid twisting at the waist; turn your whole body, not just the upper half.

• Choose chairs with firm padded backs to provide support for the lower back area. If necessary, you can add lumbar support by placing a rolled towel or a small pillow in the small of your back.

• Move around in your chair and take regular breaks; get up, walk around, and stretch.

• Exercise is the most important part of protecting your back. And don’t ignore your abdominal muscles; they work with your back to maintain correct posture.

Whatever your daily activities, make sure your back is up to them

How to look after your skin and hair in winter

Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs opens Wellbeing Conference

Cold winter air can create havoc for your poor skin and hair. Here are some tips for taking care of yourself during the coldest season of the year. This will not only help you to look good, but will prevent your skin from early signs of aging.

Wrap up from head to toe. Invest in a warm pair of gloves to protect your hands and prevent the skin on them from becoming dry and flaky. Waterproof ones are recommended if you are going out in the snow as they don’t soak your hands when you touch the snow. Don’t forget to wear a hat as they help protect your hair from drying out and they keep your head nice and warm. Too much exposure to cold, harsh weather can leave hair brittle and dry making it more susceptible to damage. As well as this, wear a scarf when possible to protect the skin on your neck and chest. At home, keep warm but not hot. If the temperature inside is much hotter than outside it can irritate your skin and can even cause broken capillaries from the temperature shock when you get home or when you go out. While walking around at home wear slippers or warm socks to prevent getting cold feet which can cause chilblains, which cause your toes to swell, the skin to become sore and sometimes causes permanent disfigurement. The same applies for when you are washing. Having a hot shower or bath can cause skin irritation if the weather is cold. As well as this it strips the natural moisture out of the skin and hair. So turn the temperature down from hot to warm.Adapt your hair care to the weather changes. There are plenty of shampoos that help your hair be strong and healthy during winter. Hair goes dry, weak and brittle during winter, but if you give it the right treatment you’ll avoid it becoming a big issue. Look for shampoos and conditioners which aim to protect and heal your hair, making sure it’s slightly more moisturizing than what you

use normally, but still good for your hair type. Also, it may be a good idea to try a moisturising hair treatment once or twice a fortnight to help repair the effects of winter, you could even make one yourself! As with your hair, your skin care routine should also be adjusted. Skin becomes drier in cold weather, especially if it’s windy, because the moisture off the skin is evaporated more quickly by the wind, and the skin doesn’t produce as much oil. Try using a slightly heavier moisturizer than you use in the summer, although still make sure that it’s suitable for your skin type. Make sure you moisturize every morning, especially if you are going outside, to prevent your skin from becoming dry and flaky. Then at night, before going to bed, wash your face to remove make up and pollutants which could irritate your skin, and apply moisturizer to treat your skin while you sleep. A couple of times a week you should use a gentle exfoliater to scrub away dry skin which can become an issue in cold weather. As well as looking after the skin on your face, don’t forget to use a body butter on the skin on your body to prevent that skin from drying out. It doesn’t need quite as much attention as the skin on your face as it’s not often exposed, but it will still need more care than it gets in the warmer months.

Remember to give your neck and chest the same treatment as you give your face as these areas are often exposed too.Give your lips extra attention to avoid them becoming chapped and splitting. Apply a moisturizing lip balm when you are doing the rest of your skin care, make it part of your routine. As well as this, before you go outside apply some Vaseline/petroleum jelly to your lips as this creates a protective barrier between the cold air and your lips, locking in moisture (remember that Vaseline isn’t actually

moisturizing, it’s only protective, so use another lip balm alongside it). You could also easily make a lip scrub to smooth away and dead or flaky skin. Do this by applying a generous amount of Vaseline to your lips, then rub either with sugar, a finger covered with a coarse flannel or with a soft toothbrush. Use circular motions and then rinse your lips and apply balm. Be gentle when exfoliating your lips, you don’t want to damage the delicate skin, you shouldn’t need to rub hard. If the flakes won’t scrub off easily then wait until the next day and do it again when it’s become a bit looser.Apply a good hand cream daily and whenever needed. This is especially important if you don’t wear gloves as the skin would be constantly exposed, and yet many of us forget about it until the skin becomes dry and flaky, and in some cases splits. To keep the skin soft and comfortable, massage hand moisturizer into your hands in the morning and evening, as well as every time you wash your hands. If you’re worried about having greasy hands, there are non-greasy feeling hand creams available. If your hands are extremely dry, apply a suitable moisturizer at night and then wear light cotton gloves which are available for wearing at night to keep the moisture on them. Once you’ve washed your hands, make sure you dry them before going out into the cold. Not doing so will make your skin more vulnerable to dryness.Eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated. Eating a healthy diet full of nutrients and vitamins is the best way to keep your hair and skin from looking and feeling healthy. It’s also important to drink enough water to keep your skin and hair hydrated from within. Eating an unbalanced diet will leave your body lacking in the nutrition needed for keeping your skin and hair looking great. Eating well will also make you feel great too! If you have trouble with maintaining a balanced diet then take multivitamins, but remember that this is not an effective replacement for the real thing.

(continued from Page 1) The event was attended by heads of companies, senior officials and professionals, in addition of more than 200 participants from Bahrain and beyond, as well as 16 exhibitors. The conference was organised by the Bahrain Association of Occupational Health Physicians in association with the Origin Consulting Group.Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mirza thanked the organising committee for the success of the conference and said it came at a time when scientific methods were being used to enhance productivity in all sectors. These methods, he said, have contributed to increasing productivity and the quality of human performance in general.Bapco’s Wellbeing Project 2020 team headed by Dr. Spyridon Trous, Manager- Medical Services and leader of Wellbeing Project 2020 participated also in the event. Dr. Trous discussed number of topics in well being and presented Bapco’s pioneer experience in this field, and explained

how to reach well being through following a healthy way of living that targets all sectors of the community including workers, employees and their families. Participation of Wellbeing Project 2020 team gave a great momentum in

enriching the event, through introducing Bapco’s project and experience in well being in the region. Bapco stand attracted many participants and was praised by visitors of the event.

A report by Morgan Stanley showed that the aggregated production of 109 listed companies fell in the third quarter of 2016 by 838,000 barrels per day (bpd) from a year earlier to 33.88 million bpd. While in the second quarter of 2016, the companies reduced production by nearly 930,000 bpd. The reduction is mainly due to the strong cutbacks in investment, as capital expenditure for the listed companies combined more than halved from $136 billion in the third quarter of 2014 to $58 billion in the same period this year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) have warned that a sharp drop in global

investment in oil and gas would result in a supply shortage by the end of the decade.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Saudi Arabia budget deficit this year to narrow to 13% of GDP from about 16% last year. The fund also expects the budget deficit to narrow to about 9.5% of GDP next year, as it expects that higher oil revenue next year relative to this year, but also continued expenditure restraint.

Listed oil companies slashed production by 2.4% in Q3.

The Malaysian state is reclaiming land along the Straits of Malacca to build a port with 1.5 million cubic meters of oil storage capacity, and dry docks to handle the biggest of oil tankers, hoping for completion within a decade. The project has a price tag of 12.5 billion ringgit ($2.82 billion) and it will be funded by Chinese investors.

Indian Oil Corp plans to invest $5.5 billion to gradually raise the capacity of Nagapattinam refinery, the current capacity is 20,000 bpd. Initially the oil processing capacity of the Nagapattinam refinery will be raised to between 120,000 bpd and 180,000 bpd and in the next phase to 300,000 bpd.

Oil firms including China’s Sinopec have expressed an interest in developing Uganda’s planned oil refinery and an investor for the project will be selected by February 2017, Uganda Energy Minister said on Tuesday. He also added that others have also expressed interests in having stakes in the new refinery project including French Total, which indicated it would take up to 10% in the refinery project, Kenya and Tanzania have also committed to taking stakes of 2.5% and 8% percent respectively.

The board of Rosneft has approved a bond programme worth 1.071 trillion roubles ($16.55 billion) for 10 years, the company said on Thursday. It also said it would use the bonds to finance foreign projects, new producing assets and to refinance previous loans and bond issues.

The plant, which will use gas-phase polymerisation technology, will support the production at nearby full-scale plants of superior materials that meet the needs of the different industries like automotive, pipe, appliances and advanced packaging. The pilot plant is the latest in a series of investments being made by Sabic at the Brightlands Chemelot R&D and manufacturing campus in Sittard-Geleen. The company opened a new research facility there in May. Lina Prada, Global PP Technology director, says the pilot plant is a further demonstration of Sabic’s commitment to invest in innovation. “When it starts up next year, we will have considerably more capacity to develop new PP materials for commercialisation in our current European assets in Geleen and in Gelsenkirchen, Germany,” says Prada. Sabic is taking a fast-track approach to construction and installation of the pilot plant. It has contracted the work to Zeton, a leading designer and builder of innovative pilot and demonstration-scale plants with facilities in Enschede, the Netherlands and Burlington Ontario in Canada. Zeton has developed a skid-mounted system that accelerates implementation times and allows full design flexibility. Installation will begin in December after Zeton has built and tested the plant in Enschede before partially disassembling it into around 15 modules for delivery to Geleen. Sabic is looking in particular to develop grades with improved stiffness/impact, flow properties and other specific secondary properties needed in different industries. Sabic plans to

concentrate on development of impact grades of polypropylene, as well as random copolymers and homopolymers. It will also carry out experiments on advanced catalysts. The plant will complement pilot plants used by Sabic at other strategic locations, and would support the strategic innovation initiatives to address continuously evolving market needs.Meanwhile, Sabic has created a new strategic business unit (SBU) to bring together its polymers and chemicals businesses under one roof to cater for the changing demand of its customers, Abdulrahman Al Fageeh, executive vice president, petrochemicals at Sabic, said in an interview.

Markets’ and customers’ needs change, Al Fageeh said, and Sabic is changing along with them. As a result, the petrochemical SBU has been created to allow Sabic a more flexible and timely approach to working with its customers.“Chemicals and polymers together under one SBU will stimulate speed, agility and innovation,” Al Fageeh said.It will allow the company to optimise feedstocks better, and react faster to short-term market dynamics. Sabic will also create a specialities and agri-nutrients SBU, which will encompass its fertilisers business at a time when other Middle Eastern producers such as Borouge and Sadara are coming online.
